There are also some comedic moments that ONLY work as well as they do in the Japanese version. Thinking of a certain buff legend who will show up later on. The English Dub is definitely better than others out there, but I think the timing just doesn't work as well with some of their jokes, and I agree that some of the voices just don't fit the characters. All of that is more to do with direction and localization constraints than acting ability of course.

I never look up the voice actors for any anime but does someone know if Gojo’s VA is the same as Hisoka from Hunter X Hunter (and Oikawa from Haikyuu bc they’re the same VA)

I didn't search the Japanese word, I wiki it and the wiki gave me misinformation. 😆 Also I've been taught it, but I was taught it in English from American martial arts school. They pronounced it the same. It's the reason l didn't question it. But found out that America, like they do all things, spelled it incorrectly. And I'm not good at Kanji. I just know Romaji, hiragana and a bit katakana. Kanji is a bit advanced

I would agree but the English dub actors overall isn’t as good as the Japanese actors. The English dub for anime’s like Death note and Haikyuu I think are equally as great to the Japanese sub, maybe better for some. But the eng voice actor for Yuji and some of the main cast isn’t as good as the Japanese voice actors sadly, especially for some characters in season 2. So I think they should just stick to the Japanese sub. I get that it might be slightly easier to understand but sadly the voice acting doesn’t fit the characters as well overall compared to the Japanese. It’s still funny and can be understood in Japanese too, so I think they should stick to the Japanese and in there own time they can watch the English dub.

as much as I love the Japanese sub, I suggest you guys watch this in dub because this show has a LOT of jokes that just won't land as well as opposed to the English dub. plus its easier to understand and its done just as well. <3

JJK is one of the best modern manga/anime. The anime was an instant hit when it first came out. Of all the shows you're watching except for Solo Leveling this is the most recent so you will notice references or similarities to the other anime you've watched so far, like you pointed out after episode 1.
So, Ju-jutsu and jiu-jitsu are the same thing. Jiu-jitsu is just the Portuguese spelling of the word. "Ju" approximates to "gentle" and "jutsu" means "technique", so Ju-jutsu roughly translates to "gentle technique" or the art of fighting an opponent without causing harm.
Gojo said Jujutsu High have 6 Sukuna fingers, the first one Itadori ate is not one of them. That one was secretly stored in the normal high school as a curse repellent.
Also, Gojo didn't immediately want to kill Itadori. According to what Gojo said, the "higher-ups" are cowards and even though nobody has been born for a 1000 years who could control Sukuna like Itadori can, they are the ones who wanted him executed immediately. Fushiguro didn't want Itadori to be killed and because Gojo is that guy, he came up with the idea to let Itadori eat all of Sukunas fingers and then kill him, which would also kill the curse inside of him. The "higher-ups" agreed.
This is a fun one guys, you're going to really enjoy this. It's not as deep as AoT, and on the surface is very goofy and random, but it does have pretty serious undertones. As I'm sure you've already noticed, given that curses are created/birthed from the negative emotions of humans.
P.s the high school environment that reminds you of Haikyu is actually almost a cliche in anime. So, so many of the most popular manga/anime take place in or around schools. Remember even in Deathnote, Light is in high school.
Loving the journey so far lads. Peace

yeah i mean the easiest and best argument for watching Naruto is that the big 3 are must watch anime. They are a staple of anime and since they are on an anime journey there's no way that journey can be complete without watching Naruto, One Piece and Bleach. And I'm not even a big fan of Bleach.

Mostly all anime has those episodes you can't comment on. I do agree that Naruto is too long but still, it's a masterpiece. If you watch other reactions the YouTubers hate people like you who try to put them off Naruto because everyone who reacts to Naruto loves it and says it's the best.

I'm actually both surprised and sad that not many people talk about it because it literally has one of the most epic samurai fight sequences in anime! The kanji is different.
Jujutsu Kaisen is written 呪術廻戦 in Japanese, so it's clearly different than 柔術 😅 (also it's read as Jujutsu, not Jūjutsu, so those 2 words are already different)
When searching something about Japanese word, you have to check the kanji. So it's not really useful to search in alphabet 😅
For example, 雨 and 飴 both read as "ame", but have different meanings, one is rain and the other one is candy.

Clearing a missconception, the ones who wanted Itadori dead expediciously are the higher ups (Old people in the organization who are above even Gojo). Gojo is the one who wanted Itadori to absorb all of Sukuna before they kill him. The higher ups are very cautious about Sukuna and they are afraid of what he can do, but Gojo is confident that he can handle him.

Happy to be here, J&J! My friend swears by JJK, so I'm excited to watch it for the first time with y'all! I can already tell the animation studio is gonna give us some crazy awesome fight scenes, and I can't wait.
Some questions I have so far:
-What will happen to Itadori as he consumes more of the fingers? Will he find it harder to control Sukuna as he goes?
-What happened to Itadori's parents, and do they have something to do with why he's so powerful? Grandpa wanted to talk about them before he passed, but we never got to hear what he was going to say.
Super excited for the next two episodes. I'm going to pace myself along with you two, and I might try rewatching in dub like you do. See you there!

Oh this is going to be so fun to see you guys watch! Super excited! I'm sorry that I haven't read any of the other comments so I don't know if what I write is already said. But here is some NON-SPOILER context.
- The title of the show/manga uses characters "Jujutsu" as 呪術 (this is different from the way the martial art characters are written 柔術 known as Jujutsu/Jiu Jitsu) - this character 呪 in the title of the show translates roughly to "curse" and 術 roughly translates to "technique". So in this particular context Jujutsu means "Cursed Technique".
- This went super fast in the beginning so to explain - curses are born in places where there is a lot of negative energy, and where there are more people in one place (like a school) you are more likely to have a lot emotions/energy from those people, including negative energy, concentrated in once place which can attract or create curses. To combat this, they would put a cursed object (an object infused with a high amount of cursed energy) to overpower the negative energy coming and going from people in that one place. But as we saw, it's bad practice because that cursed object, once released from its seal, can actually attract even worse curses because it emits worse energy.
- Fushiguro mentions that not everyone can see curses as not everyone has cursed energy - if you have no cursed energy you normally cannot see curses, but in a place FULL of cursed energy like the school, it may be so strong that people can see them.
- Sukuna is currently sharing Itadori's body (think Venom if you're into Marvel) but Itadori has more autonomy over his body than Sukuna and so he can release or suppress Sukuna if he chooses to for the most part - shown by Gojo telling Itadori to give him 10 seconds with Sukuna. Itadori allows Sukuna to take control, but once the 10 seconds were up, Itadori took control again.
- Some themes mentioned here that you may want to keep in mind - the Principal says all Jujutsu Sorcerers have to be a little crazy to be one, particularly because they encounter so much negativity and death (as Gojo was explaining to Itadori on the bench at the hospital, many missions end up gruesome), and to willingly take on a career like that you can't be too fearful. Spontaneous people or people with true conviction rush head first into danger better than fearful people. So you will notice a lot of big or polarizing personalities and random weird humour. It's actually pretty common in most anime to have inserted random humour and big personalities, but it actually makes sense in this context.
I'm so so sorry that this was long but I hope it helps! I can't wait to see more reactions :)

Lots of hilarious and cool pop culture references (like the JLaw callout) threaded throughout the series - it’ll be fun to see if you guys catch them (though of course some are less geared toward a non-Japanese audience and difficult to recognize) ! JJK is quite ‘contemporary’ in that way — takes place around 2018 at the start I believe

Wow. That's awesome. I'm definitely looking that up. I love anime that take a bit of realism to account. One of my favorite anime, not many knows about, is Rurouni Kenshin,. Loved that anime. It even got more interesting when l found out that the main character Kenshin was a real samurai named Gensai Kowakami. Also another favorite anime was Hikaru no Go, had real igo players like Honinbo Shusaku. I use to play the game iGo. Once, I made it to the level of 2dan amateur so it was fascinating knowing that it was real characters and real games that were being played. That anime didn't get popular so they had to cancel it

Jujutsu 柔術 jūjutsu, pronounced also known as jiu-jitsu and ju-jitsu, is a family of Japanese martial arts and a system of close combat (unarmed or with a minor weapon) that can be used in a defensive or offensive manner to kill or subdue one or more weaponless or armed and armored opponents. "It was coined by Hisamori Tenenuchi when he officially established the first school of jiu-jitsu in Japan. A subset of techniques from certain styles of jujutsu were used to develop many modern martial arts and combat sports, such as judo, aikido, sambo, ARB, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts." That's the only term I knew. That just what wiki says and it's also what I'd been taught in martial art classes. I didn't know it had another meaning. Your meaning makes more sense for this anime.

AoT and Deathnote are a bit more unique among anime in how they handle humor, as they separate it into humorous episodes or arcs (training arc in AoT, memory loss arc in Deathnote). JJK is actually a more typical anime, where there’s a lot more whiplash between dark/serious topics and completely silly jokes happening all the time. It does take some time to get used to the whiplash haha

JJK celebrates pop culture in a number of ways, some being as obvious as namedropping Jennifer Laurence and some being as subtle as storyboarding/animating a scene to reference another show. I am certain people will point the less obvious ones out to you, so just enjoy the show and don't worry about catching them. They won't affect your experience with the show very much.

As a spiritual person, I can try to explain to you about the spirit.
We believe that we are not the body
We believe that we all have a Souls/Spirit. The spirit is our true self. It's like the energy of our consciousness. (Hard to explain) But, The body is looked at as a vehicle for the soul to use to experience the earthly physical plain. When we die we separate from our bodies and our souls continue.
Where? Nobody knows. That's where religion comes in play. Some say reincarnation. Other says heaven/hell and some say we roam the Earth as spirits without a body like that movie Ghost.
I'm not religious but I am spiritual and I had a NDE years back. You should look up people's NDE stories.
Our bodies is like a car and the driver is the soul. Dying is getting out of the car seat.
Now, here is what the anime is saying.
Our body is a vessel that holds our soul
But other souls can share our bodies.
In other words, it's a form of possession. 2 souls sharing one body like the potigeist.
In itadori position, he's in the front seat and the curse (demon) Sakuna is in the passenger seat.
You know the phrase "Jesus take the wheel"
Well, it's more like Satan takes the wheel when Sukuna takes control over Yuki Itadori body

I'm glad y'all are doing the rewatches in dub! The sub is my personal favorite but tbh there's some dialogue that really sticks the landing more in dub than in sub. There's subtleties and nuances that are better translated and adapted for english speakers in the dub and the voice actors are really great too.
Yes Jared you're correct, Sukuna is the curse, his finger was the cursed object, and because Yuuji ate it now Sukuna is incarnated and as you saw Yuuji can control when he lets Sukuna out and when he reels him back in. It really is a situation where Gojo doesn't know what's gonna happen, he's just letting it play out and stepping in as needed. Though a little clarification, neither Gojo nor Fushiguro wanted to execute Yuuji. Initially when Sukuna incarnated in Yuuji's body, yes Fushiguro wanted to exorcise him as he was thought to be a full on curse now, but that was before he realized Yuuji could regain control. Then after Gojo's little dance with Sukuna when he knocks out Yuuji, he asks Fushiguro's opinion on what should be done with Yuuji since they've confirmed he's still in there and Fushiguro admits he wishes for Yuuji to be allowed to live which Gojo readily agrees to do what he can in the matter. (In this world, "execute" is the word typically used in reference to killing a (usually cursed) human, while "exorcise" is used for killing curses.)
"I don't know how I'll feel when I die, but I don't want to regret the way I lived." - that line from Yuuji always gets me. Good stuff.
One thing you guys may have caught but I'm not sure so just in case -- it was alluded to a couple times that there are healer sorcerers, like the one that went to see Iguchi, Yuuji's injured friend, and the one that treated Fushiguro's injuries as well hence Yuuji surprise at how much better his physical condition was when they saw each other again.

You guys don't know what jujutsu is? Jujutsu, in America translation is the close combat martial arts style from Japan. Also it's called Jujitsu. I once studied the arts of Jujitsu, Aikido and kendo. Kendo is a martial arts swordsman, samurai style that uses wooden sticks called bokken (bo-ken) and bamboo sticks called Shinai (she-ny-E) I mention these arts because you will see them a lot in anime. Also the martial arts in the Ninja way is called Ninjustu. And you have Taijustu.... "Jutsu" (術) is a Japanese word means technique, method, spell, skill or trick. So it is added at the end of every martial art style. So, Ju-jutsu. The skill or technique of Ju. (Whatever Ju means) Also there's Chinese martial arts as well, like drunken monk, tai chi ect. You'll learn lots of those names from watching mix Martial arts like UFC. When the day comes you will hear those arts being mentioned in other anime such as NARUTO or Bleach.

When gojo said yuji can "control himself against sukuna" he meant that sukuna cannot have full access to yuji's body, yuji can control and switch with sukuna if he wants to, but sukuna cannot do the same. He's literally trapped in yuji's body with no control to take over and go rogue.

Jujutsu (呪術) means curse technique, Ju(呪) came from the word Noroi(呪い) which means curse, and Jutsu(術) literally means technique. So, Jujutsu sorcerer = a sorcerer who uses cursed technique.
FYI, Kaisen (廻戦) in JJK is not an actual word, just a made-up word, it never really explained officially but Kai(廻) from the word 廻る(mawaru) could mean something like wandering in circle, just like a Buddhist word Rinne(輪廻), the concept of soul going from life to death to another life in circle. And Sen(戦) means fight/war, from the word Tatakai(戦い).
So the title Jujutsu Kaisen could mean something like fighting over/using curse technique endlessly in full circle.
This basic concept makes sense because you can see many things go in circle already, just like Sukuna is someone who were existed then living again as curse object and now living inside Yuji. Or simply Yuji being a sorcerer because of his grandpa's words to begin with, that's also some kind of circle.
This is more like poetic concept in Japanese, it will be fun if you understand it and find the small and big circle inside the story 🫶🏻

As great as mappa is with the animation it's actually bitter sweet, I remember hearing stories about mappa animators being over worked and not being able to go home and see their families for a long periods of time. I believe they were working on 3 or more shows at one time. These animators go through hell to give us these great shows

Gojo just explained what happened to Yuji he did not show Yuji that, it might be a bit confusing at first but you will get it eventually.
