Interesting point about fan service that I thought I would bring up since I’ve been researching it recently for a uni project! Relative to other anime (especially sports anime) that I’ve watched, Haikyuu actually has not very much fan service. But it is definitely there. It comes down to the intended audience (boys, since haikyuu is a ‘shonen’ anime) and how to gain their interest. But audiences have changed a lot recently so many girls also watch shonen anime, and as a whole don’t like fan service. There’s also fan service aimed at girls though in other anime. Things are changing, there definitely used to be a lot more, and it was much worse. Being in Japan now it’s shocking and uncomfortable to me how prevalent it is. That being said, in Haikyuu I think it usually comes off less as actual fan service and more like joking about how the characters (who are typical teenagers) think. Even as a girl I find the scene you pointed out amusing cos we’ve all been Yachi at some point lol. Interestingly I checked the manga to compare Kiyoko’s initial introduction and it was totally different. No weird fan service shots at all. I guess the animators added it. But anyway, glad you mentioned it! I agree that it’s unnecessary and I’ve found quite a few academic papers discussing it P.S RIP Daichi

Welcome!🙂

Just watched your reaction to Jin’s Weverse live. Jin repeating the Han River Cat Challenge and dancing to Seven twice in response to ARMY’s chants “Again! Again!” is a good example of fan service. He gave ARMY exactly what they wanted.🥰

Listening to you discuss potential plays and getting more familiar with volleyball terms makes me so happy! I hope one day you get to watch a volleyball game in person! When you’re up in the air to hit, it really is a quick second so the decision making has to be fast. Usually when you’re taking your approach to hit, you already have an idea of where you’re going to place it. Now that Hinata’s learned other moves besides the quick, he’s able to think more and adapt to the situation accordingly just like he did after Johzenji stepped back to receive his quick the first time. It takes great peripheral vision to be able to see where everyone is while you’re in the air and Hinata continues to develop that skill the more that he learns and plays.

you're right on johzenji's play style! someone already explained it so i won't go into too much detail, but i love their team too for that reason. also, they had no third years besides their manager. all of the players you saw were second years. as for wakunan, they're so underrated lmaoo i love how it's the first time there's someone similar to the little giant regarding play style, and yes, takeru is indeed their captain! you can tell by the little thing under their jersey number.

Just watched both, love your reactions and what you said about Johzenji's style, J&J! Fun fact: Before 1996, only hands and arms could be used to make contact with the ball in VB. The rule changed after, to allow players to use any parts of the body, such as head or legs (like you saw the punch and kick), as long as the game is still in play. And this rule change happened during my high school days! I remembered how shocked we were then 😅. It was scary and we felt nervous at first, because it was ingrained in our minds that anywhere else other than using hands or arms would be a foul. But soon enough, we created new training methods and applied them when necessary during games. Overall, it was challenging, but a very fun experience then. There could be more but I recall there were 2 other VB rule changes around my high school/ uni days too. One was the scoring system - the old 'side out scoring' (15 points) replaced with the current rally scoring system you see now (25 points). The other was the serving rules, where if the served ball touches the net, a re-serve was required before, but now its allowed. Thank you J&J! Always looking forward to Haikyuu Thursdays 💜🙏

As one of the few countries without a predominantly christian or muslim background, Japan uses a lot more body humor such as fanservice and farts.

I think Jouzenji's story has room for misunderstanding at times because of how English is, but I'm glad you guys got it for the most part. I'll leave this here anyways in case it could be of help to anyone else. The verb Jouzenji players use during their screen time is "asobu," which literally means "to play" in English. However, since the verb "play" in English is also used to describe "taking part in sports," the significance of using "asobu" can get lost in translation. The "play" meaning "asobu" is the "play" we use for "engaging in activities for enjoyment." Easiest example would be to think of children "playing" together. (I use children as an example because we don't really say, "I'm going out to play" in English once we're older to describe something like "hanging out.") "Asobu" isn't used for playing, say, a game of sport. That's why in episode 13, Hinata appeared curious/confused when Terushima said he wanted to "play with the two-meter guy too" (though it was translated as he wanted to "play against" him). It's also why someone called Jouzenji the "party team," and why you saw the translation team translate "asobu" in different ways to fit the situation better (like "play around" and/or "fool around") despite it literally meaning "play" like how children play. As you guys imply in the halfway point discussion, Jouzenji is a team that wants to have fun. Having fun is great and all, but their problem, as pointed out by their manager Misaki and their previous captain Okudake, is that they "just" want to have fun. They are basically "all play and no work," which is why they have the guts to try out things they've never done before for the first time in a TOURNAMENT match. As Misaki said, "playing" (again, the "engaging in activities for enjoyment" kind of playing) and "not thinking" are not the same thing-- "having fun" does not equate to "being reckless." Crunchyroll translated the last episode title as "Place to Play," and while that isn't wrong, "asobiba" literally means "playground." Misaki tells the team that Okudake always used to say that in order to play, you need a playground. In order to truly have fun, you must first lay down a foundation, and Terushima starts seeing the true meaning of this in Daichi. Karasuno is able to go all out because Daichi is able to provide a solid foundation for them-- they are able to "play" because Daichi is able to provide a "playground" for them to actually play in. This is the theme and message that the author continuously tries to convey to us during the match against Jouzenji. This is also supported by Grandpa Ukai's "to truly have fun in a match, you have to be strong" (i.e., be good) and Coach Anabara's "when you have the ability to move your body how you want on demand is when you can actually 'play' freely" (yet again, the "engaging in activities for enjoyment" kind of playing). During one of their timeouts, Terushima admits that Karasuno appears to be "playing" more freely than they are, and this is because Karasuno has a "playground" to "play" in (provided by Daichi), is strong enough to have fun (as said by Grandpa Ukai), and has the ability to move how they want (as said by Coach Anabara)-- all earned with hard work. This is different from the "fooling around" kind of playing that Jouzenji does. Karasuno put in the work to get to where they are, and they finally get to "play" and have fun; Jouzenji doesn't get to do the same thing just by "playing" without putting in the work (and they thankfully realize this by the end of it all). By the way, the team on the top left at 18:12 that "dominated" is Shiratorizawa. Ushiwaka's team! Anyways. So sorry for the essay! 😂💕 As always, I love coming home to you guys and your reactions! As mentioned before, I love that you guys take notes on what you want to discuss at the end of the episode and aren't afraid to rewind if you feel you've missed something. The show I was rooting for unfortunately didn't make the cut to even be on the poll, but I'll probably be sticking around with you guys for a long time anyways so maybe we'll get there eventually...? 😂💕 I hope you guys have lots of fun with your next show! 💕 Thank you guys always for such wonderful videos! Love you guys! Keep it up, but also take it easy!

Also, Hanna Misaki is a 3rd-year student (not VB player) serving in her last tournament as Johzenji’s VB club manager. She is to Johzenji what Kiyoko is to Karasuno.

Haikyu!! is in the Shonen genre, hence it’s target audience is teenage boys. Fan service is meant to appeal to boys’ fantasies. Fan service is certainly not unique to anime. Think “Return of the Jedi” and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia wearing a metal bikini and chains while enslaved by gangster Jabba the Hutt. Or have you seen the old comedy “Airplane?” There are scenes of tight camera closeups of bouncing women’s well-endowed chests (burned into my mind’s eye as an 80s child who watched the films lol). Fan service also occurs in Shojo anime aimed at girls. You’ll see handsomely illustrated men in states of undress or striking sexy poses. Fan service isn’t always sexual and isn’t limited to certain artistic mediums. Anything an artist, celebrity, entertainer, writer, athlete, etc. does to please their fans (giving the fans exactly what they want) can be considered a type of fan service. Thanks, guys! Always love your Haikyu!! reactions.💜

i miss daichi so bad... 😭😢 seeing this episode again breaks my heart

ngl, compared to other anime, haikyuu barely has any fan service. like genuinely, i think its even used as comedic relief here only. thats why yachi is looking this way, she's basically jealous of the "size" if you know what i mean lol
