this episode is one of my fave episodes on aot. like, the fact that all this time it was eren who basically made grisha kill the reiss family??? 😭 i couldn’t believe it it’s such a plot twist. also, i can’t help but make parallels between eren and walter from breaking bad. both start with noble intentions but gradually transform into darker, more ruthless versions of themselves, justifying their immoral actions as necessary for a greater good. they both struggle between two identities: walter between himself and heisenberg, and eren between being a savior and a destroyer. their relationships become strained as they hurt those close to them to achieve their goals…shows that make their protagonist ‘the antagonist’ are CRAZY and masterpieces if done well!
to explain why grisha can see zeke—well, grisha can see eren’s memories because that’s the attack titan power. since eren is with zeke right now, grisha can see him too. basically, all this time they’ve been going through grisha’s memories, and grisha was able to see what eren was seeing!

I’m finally caught up to you guys! Basically grisha is interacting with eren and Zeke through erens memories that he is giving grisha in real time. So the whole scene with Zeke and grisha hugging, eren was behind them watching, and eren can see Zeke, so grisha is seeing Zeke through erens memories.

The fact that it was Eren who made Grisha kill the Reiss family all along, it's probably one of the biggest plot twists I have ever witnessed. I love seeing people's reactions to this episode, and Grisha's VA performance still gives me chill every time I hear it

This episode says that Attack Titan holders can see into the memories of their successors. But Grisha, when breaking down, wonders why Eren isn't showing him everything. This suggests that Eren controls what future memories of his Grisha is allowed to see. So it is not that Grisha sees Eren's memories but rather that Eren, in a sense, sent specific memories of his to Grisha.
Also, Eren isn't directly interacting with Grisha. As we can see, Eren is looking at Grisha and convincing him to transform. All that Eren experiences while doing that becomes his memory, which then transfers to Grisha, who relives it in real-time.
So, in Eren's memories, Grisha sees himself from Eren's POV while hearing what Eren says to him.
Also, in all scenes, Grisha is "seeing" Zeke; Eren is actually standing facing Zeke. So Grisha knows where Zeke is located because he sees Eren's POV (which includes Zeke) from Eren's memories.
So, when Grisha is hugging Zeke, he is in real life hugging air. But he knows where Zeke is because Eren is standing behind them, facing Zeke. That's why he manages to hug exactly where Zeke stands.
Also, at one point, a shocked expression of younger Eren is seen after they return to the Paths Desert, but before that, we also see a scene of Eren kissing Historia's hand. Why are both shown? Well, remember season 3. After Eren kissed Historia's hand in season 3, he saw his father's memories of what happened in the crystal chapel. And after the kiss, Eren is making the exact same expression that is shown in this episode.
So, this episode is calling back to that specific scene. But what does it mean? I won't tell you since the next episode explains things further. You guys should just think about why those two things have something to do with each other. It's shown they do. (somebody else whrote this but just want share it again because i think its a good explanation)

To this day I'm surprised how Isayama had the balls to make his own protagonist the main villain in the very final season of the show.. This is the reason why AOT is unmatched. No other show can make me feel the same way AOT did.
lol you guys talking to your future kids was really sweet ;w; and Jared is absolutely right.. if we could look into the memories of the people we resent, we would be completely different than who we are.. AOT has made me think deeply about my own traumas. This anime is life changing

The thing about Eren is that Isayama did great job with him to potray human nature as it is. There are no good or fully bad ones, we just act the way we think we should based on our goals, on our personalities, morals and mindset, and how people view us depends on the situation. It reminds me of the conversation Armin had with Annie, when he said "A good person? What does it mean? I don't really like that term, because to me it just seems to mean someone who's good to you. And I don't think there's any person who's good to everyone".
The shift in Eren from the moment he first touched Historia and saw the future that is waiting for them to the person he became in season 4 is absolutely mind blowing. One thing that stuck out to me in one of your reactions, was when you've read the comment about how season 4 is about us, the audience, and it's us who choose what is wrong or right, and its up to us to decide, and you said "no, we don't want this power. we don't want to decide", and when I was watching AOT for the second time, knowing all the details and the plot, it seemed to me that Eren felt the same way. He’s just a teenager who’s shouldered a huge responsibility, power, and had to act knowing what is waiting for them in the future. Especially in the moment when he
The grey morale of this show is fantastic, and its so real. I have no words, only HOLY HAJIME LET ME KISS YOUR BRAIN.

Good explanation. One part that throws people off is the fact they animated and created sounds for physical touch, like the hug between Zeke and Grisha. Which was a bad choice imo because even if people come to the same conclusion as you, the part where they touch even threw me way off.

First time watcher.
This episode was so crazy and kind of confusing towards the end with them making contact with Grisha. Thank you to everyone in the comments who explained and broke it down. I was not going to get it without reading you all’s comments on that.
Now onto Eren, HE’S THE BAD ONE?!??
This story is crazy. The way it’s played out (up to this point). How did Isayama even come up with a story this intricate and complex. I’m mind blown by how much intelligence and skill goes into building a world like this. Literally the best storyline in a show or any piece of media I’ve seen. And the execution is genius level.
I can’t wait to see what’s next but my mind is swirling with the reveal in this episode. I’m sure there’s more mind blowing things to come. This show is nuts

Thank you for your great reaction!!
Just few things.
I'm sure someone will clear up what happened when Grisha could have contact with future Eren and Zeke. But I'll say it too quickly.
It was that, Grisha was seeing the future memories of Eren's when he is wondering around in Grisha's memory.
Which means, Grisha was seeing from Eren's eyes(=memories) that Eren was convincing Grisha to do what he must do.
There is a well-known concept about time traveling, and that is "past, present and future is existing at the same time."
This is a important concept in AOT too.
This is an addition comment regarding to your conversation:
There were a huge event with my daughter(14 y/o) recently and I had completely lost my confidence in myself been a mother, and was so depressed about that I couldn't even stop crying at some point.
But you said to your future children "I'm not perfect", and that hit me so hard.
I always wanted to be a "perfect mother" for my children, and I was literally depressed that I fail to be one.
But with your words, I suddenly realized that I didn't need to be perfect.
I know most everyone in this world encouraged me with the same thing, and I thought I understood that, but I don't know why, the moment you said it hit me so hard, thankyou.
And I also thought, that Grisha was the same.
He was doing what he thought it was best for Zeke's future, to give Zeke freedom.
And, he finally realized he was doing it the mistaken way when he saw Zeke pointing out on him, and regretted himself, he failed to became a good father for Zeke.
He wasn't perfect either, of course.
This is all for today!!
Thank you again!!
And AOT is still coming!!!! Beware!!!!
Have fun and take care :)

To explain the scenes with Eren, Zeke and Grisha.
Users of the attack titan can receive memories from future inheritors. Think of these as snippets of film playing in your head at any given moment. These normally can't be changed nor interacted with.
So why could Eren interact with the memories? because at this point in time he had the perfect conditions to do so.
1. The Attack Titan
2. The Founding Titan
3. Contact With A Titan of Royal Blood
With condition 2 and 3, Eren and Zeke are able to use the coordinate to view and experience Grisha's memories while in the paths. Think of this as Eren and Zeke looking through a one-way mirror.
If Eren had any titan other than the Attack Titan, this would've been the end of what they could achieve in the memories, leaving them only being able to observe through said one-way mirror.
However, since Eren and Grisha were both inheritors of the Attack Titan, communication/interaction between them becomes possible!
The reason for this is because the Attack Titan can see "forward" in time through future memories, meaning that while Grisha is living and experiencing these events, he can also receive future memories of Eren observing and interacting with him in them, all in real time.
So whenever Grisha can "see", "sense" or "hear" Eren, he's actually receiving a future memory from Eren's perspective in that same exact moment. Note that Grisha can never truly "see" Eren, as he's receiving the memories from Eren's point of view, meaning he's actually looking at himself in third person. He can only guess where Eren’s location is based on this. It is also why Grisha looks so freaked out whenever he's "looking" at or being talked to by old Eren, since he is experiencing and observing it from Eren’s eyes.
The reason Grisha is able to see and interact with Zeke in those 2 scenes is because in both of those moments, Eren is standing behind the both of them. Grisha is experiencing Eren's future memories of observing them both from behind, ultimately allowing Grisha to see and interact with Zeke through Eren’s view.
(At this point in time we can also assume that the memories shown to past inheritors are somewhat hand-picked by the future inheritors. Hence Grisha saying "Why won't you show me everything?")
Also!
Remember the scene in season 3 where Eren kissed Historia's hand and saw Grisha's memories from the chapel? In that moment he not only saw Grisha's memories, but also himself and his own future through Grisha's memories. This is why he made that specific face after the kiss, because he saw his own future, including the future him telling Grisha what to do.

Awesome reaction as usual J&J!! Here are some of my observations about this episode:
1. It was very heartwarming when Grisha referred to Mikasa as his own daughter. His mistakes raising Zeke in Marley really taught him the importance of valuing family.
2. When Grisha is staring at Zeke, he is seeing Zeke from Eren's POV. Therefore, he is not actually able to see future Eren. Hence when he tells Eren about the basement, he is actually looking at himself through Eren.
3. Now it makes sense why every Attack Titan has fought for freedom. Like you guys said, the previous inheritors have been controlled by Eren's will. Eren is and always has been the Attack Titan.
4. There is a brief scene when Eren kisses Historia's hand after Grisha slaughters the Reiss family. It's a throwback to the last episode of season 3. Basically, four years ago Eren saw his own future through his dad's memories, including whatever terrible things Grisha said comes next! That's why Eren looked so shaken afterwards, and why his demeanor changed so much from season 3 to season 4.
5. Grisha said that he killed everyone except the father (Rod Reiss). This was done intentionally by Eren so that Rod could protect Historia, who would eventually become Queen. Eren manipulated everything!
Also, in case you guys are interested and have time, there is an 11-min Youtube video about this episode called "How Attack on Titan Wrote the Perfect Plot Twist"
( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R319_g4KAJ8 ) . It's one of the best AOT analysis videos in my opinion, and it does not contain any spoilers past this episode. Just wanted to let you guys know!

Great reaction twins
Just one more thing I feel should be cleared up, the quick scene of younger eren kissing someone's hand is a call back to season 3 when Historia was made queen. If you remember or go back and watch it again, there's a spark when eren kisses her hand and his facial expression changes drastically. That is the moment he sees what's to come in his future, he sees this "terrible" thing that happens that grisha mentions in this episode, that's why erens facial expression after kissing historias hand is a mix of anger, shock, disbelief, you name it. It's also why erens whole attitude changed after that episode in season 3 and we got a very eerie and calm eren pointing out to the sea talking about slaughtering his enemies with no emotion, as if he accepted whatever fate he witnessed when kissing the hand of historia
You have an Army, yeah We got a Jinx(Brandon)

This is one of the most complexe cases of time traveling I have ever encountered.
Long story short, but long, Zeke uses the power of the founder to watch Grisha's memories in 4k with Eren, they are literally walking in the man's memories. While watching everything in 4K tho wtv Eren sees becomes his memories, including seeing Zeke in Grisha's memories... now the Attack titan can send memories to past inheritors, basically Eren sent a memory of bearded Zeke being in the basement with him, in real time, to Grisha.
So from Grisha's perspective he is receiving a memory of the same room he is in with Zeke in front of him (to send this memory Eren had to be looking at Zeke as well thats why he was behind Grisha). That's also why Grisha said Zeke's name even before waking up, and as soon as he woke up he looked directly in Zeke's way, the memory he was receiving with Zeke in it and the actual room he was in at the time were overlapping. The same thing happened in the end of the episode, Eren is behind looking at Zeke, so he sends to Grisha a memory of Zeke in front of him, ant it creates the illusion that Zeke is there, Zeke and Grisha are able to communicate like this lol, more like a message from the past that Zeke is now receiving.
People never mention that this was and act of kindness of Eren towards Zeke so he could get some closure.
Eren is till scary tho, Holy Hajime!!!

The way Grisha was able to "see" Eren and Zeke was because older Eren is sending the memories of these scenes to Grisha at these moments. So basically Grisha is seeing a memory of Zeke in Eren's POV. He's not hugging him, but Eren is right behind Grisha and is showing him Zeke standing in front of him. I feel like this sounds like nonsense lol but hopefully it's helpful. This is my favorite episode of all time in any media, but it took me about 4 rewatches and some youtube videos to even understand the concept of the attack titan.

my favorite episode of the series. We weren’t watching the hero but the villain this whole time. Although it’s actually a matter of perspective, and i agree with Eren’s decision, he is the bad guy and i love this twist. Not only that but the fact that he kept influencing the story (past and future) as a hero and villain at the same time in some moments, since current eren was present in the story since the beginning.

So do you guys remember the episode after the attack on Liberio in Marley when Hanje catches eren talking to himself in the jail cell saying "fight! Fight!" Hanje thinks eren is simply talking to himself but I've heard future eren was actually speaking to his present self, I don't know of this is a confirmed theory but after this episode makes a lot of sense
Another thing is the continued foreshadowing we have been given and never realize until certain episodes. We see eren in this episode go through grishas memories and his own and I'm 99% sure that in past episodes there are scenes with a figure in the background who I believe is future eren watching himself and manipulating events in his life to make sure he ends up where he's at in the story now. In season 1 after the first attack on the walls we saw eren and armin arguing in an episode and Mikasa punches eren in the face then sticks the loaf of bread in his mouth, Theres a moment when the camera is zoomed out we can see what looks like a hooded figure in the background leaning back against the wall or a pillar and I think that's actually eren from the future, maybe I'm wrong but the mind blowing brilliance of isayama to add in details he knew most people would never even see if this were to be true just solidifies in my mind this man was committed to give the people a story worth experiencing

Since you guys had time to absorb what’s going on, I want you guys to rank these three big AOT plot twists in your own opinion (#1 being the greatest):
1. Reiner/Bertholdt Reveals
2. The Basement Reveals
3. Eren Manipulating Grisha since the start of the show

Every titan shifter has the ability to inherit memories from their predecessors, for example:
1. Porco Galliard saw Ymir's and Marcel's memories.
2. Armin saw some of Bertholdt's memories.
3. Eren saw Grisha's memories.
You should note that titan shifters can only inherit memories of PAST titan shifters, however the Attack Titan in particular, not only can it inherit memories of PAST inheritors but it can also inherit memories of FUTURE inheritors.
Now let's talk about the whole Zeke, Eren and Grisha scenes. What happened is that, using the FOUNDING Titan, Eren and Zeke were capable of viewing Grisha's memories, this was done so that Zeke can convince Eren that he was brainwashed by Grisha.
Think of the ATTACK Titan's abilities like a livestream, thus Eren is the camera/voice recorder/streamer while Grisha is someone watching said stream.
Using this comparaison, we can understand how Grisha and Eren were communicating, Grisha was watching the stream with Eren being the streamer, this made Grisha see himself through Eren's eyes (camera), and hear Eren (voice recorder).
Every time Grisha was capable of seeing Zeke, it was because Eren was also directly looking at Zeke, thus Grisha inherited Eren's memories of looking at Zeke, and was capable of "seeing" Zeke and "hearing" him while also "hugging" him.
From an outside perspective, Grisha looks like an idiot who is hugging air and apologizing to someone who isn't there named Zeke.
