When you guys commented about the eerie, exciting soundtrack this anime produces, it reminds me you guys should TOTALLY check out Paprika, another psychological thriller anime but its only a movie and their soundtrack also goes OFF!!!!!!!!!!! ♥️ its amazing written by Satoshi Kon, he also had a similarly psychothrilling anime movie called Perfect Blue i recommend!! ( tho , it does have some 18+ contents ... ) oh!! aaand lastly , he also collaborated with the same musician for a short psychothriller anime called Paranoia Agent, another 10/10!! 🥰

ME TOO

Peach

I LOVE L SO MUCH! WHAT A GREAT CHARACTER!

Peach

Love this! I agree that L was such an amazing character that him catching Light would be much better than Near and Mello.

Peach

I’m glad I’ve been here since day 1! This was also my first anime, so it holds a dear place in my heart. Great reaction! About to go watch the penultimate AOT reaction with y’all 😏 it’s gonna be a blast

bubbaburto

Light's confusion and shock at him being outsmarted by Near HURTS. it hurts because we hardly spent anytime with Near and yet he took down Kira. I don't just say this as a Light/Kira enthusiast, but I say this a genuine fan of L. While we didn't get to learn a whole lot about L while he was alive as he opposed Kira, we had time to believe in him and his skills as a detective. We spent time with him and got to know his quirks and habits and tendencies. It made him so likeable not just because he was such a unique character but we as the audience recognized he was Kira's one true foe. So to see Kira be taken down by a kid who only seemed to be L's mere replacement, it kinda sucked. I do feel the show did a disservice to Near and Mello as characters because given the proper development, they would have felt like true adversaries for Kira. Yes, I personally love villains, but I can also appreciate the heroes that take them down, and Near doesn't truly feel worthy of just stepping in and taking down such a huge adversary. Moving on, I do feel Light's story completed a full circle. He was a smart but bored boy who found a supernatural weapon and used it to please his whims, righteous or not. Though it was secondary to his plans of being a godly figure, he instilled his beliefs onto the world and even after he is gone, the world is ruled by the law of Kira. For better or worse, Light left a significant imprint on the world. He wanted to eradicate crime because in his eyes, as the son of a police officer, crime equals evil. Context is irrelevant. It's a result of him being the son of a cop. A black and white version of right and wrong was instilled into Light from the beginning. There was no room for gray area. Once he got a hold of the death note, he took that notion and ran with it to his very end. Not because it made the world a better place, mind you, but because behind it all, it served as a plausible excuse for Light to place himself on a pedestal and continue his evil deeds with no remorse. He was an evil force he claimed to rid the world from but his very existence and effort proved otherwise. To his very end, I don't believe Light regretted his choices. Yes, on the verge of death he called out for the likes of Misa and Takada but as we all know it wasn't out of genuine affection. Light was just grasping at straws. He didnt' want to die, but worst of all, he didn't want to LOSE. How fitting that the last thing he saw before dying, was a vision of L. Just like when L died, the last thing he saw was Light looking down on him. There is a theory a lot of us adopt that after death Light became a shinigami. Ryuk himself said early on that Light was more of a shinigami than literal shinigamis thelselves. The death note rules tell us that anyone that uses the death note can neither go to heaven, nor hell. Now, I have watched this show more times than I can count and somewhere I could had sworn I saw/read a rule that specifically says something about a human who has used the death note will sent to "nothingness" when they die. Now, when the show talks about the shinigami realm it is described by the gods of death who inhabit it as "barren". Could be coincidence, or could be that I am just wrong, but what if after death Light woke up in the shinigami realm as a shinigami himself? I have a personal theory that all shinigamis are humans who used the death note while on earth. I think this could be supported by Rem when she talks about how a shinigami's organs have "degraded" past the point of needing sustenance, implying shinigamis had living organs that at one point did need sustenance. And at the end of the second opening credits, we see Light in what looks like a wasteland, all alone. I believe Light did become a shinigami after death and continued the reign of Kira, now with more liberty and power than he had as a human. What a fun journey this has been. I have watched many DN reactions and I often drop them because I am disappointed in the lack of comprehension from the viewer but you guys never let this silly goose down. I am excited to see where your anime journey takes you to next and until then, much love! xoxo

if you guys are interested, here’s a video of light’s japanese voice actor Miyano Mamoru dubbing light’s ‘evil laugh’: https://youtu.be/LeDTtYN57Rk?si=bQRfrdUsy0BALJDy the video includes: 1) the jpn dub for L’s funeral scene that you’ve both already watched, and then 2) Miyano Mamoru recording the scene live, 3) the jpn dub of light admitting to be kira, and lastly 4) Miyano 10 years later recreating it impromptu !!

uchenna

I adore the anime ending because not only is the music beautiful, but there's that moment where Light sees L looking down on him as he dies, just as he did with L. Even after all those years after his death, L was still the ONE person that Kira respected, and the one person that Light truly felt was his equal. They were the only people who really understood each other and so it's fitting that in his last moments, Light thinks of L. And then the final image being of the moon, like the kanji his name is written with.

Hippopi

Make sure you guys check out the deleted "L's funeral" scene!

Hippopi

I don't know if somebody else have shared this but there is an alternate ending to Deathnote where Light actually lives and continues to be Kira for a really long time until he gets tired and asks Ryuk to kill him instead. He then wakes up in the Shinigami realm. Here is a link to a tiktok vid that explains it if you're interested: https://www.tiktok.com/@moexkage/video/7266569162351283498?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7285252960794592775

Rheyia Pomar

Light actually saved millions of people by killing criminals, but now crime rate will go back up, wars will start again, and tens of millions will die. I mean, the stupidest thing they have done is stopping Kira forreal.

Lufttwafe

I hope Matsuda will spend rest of his days in prison for shooting Light. What a idiot.

Lufttwafe

An amazing first anime journey it has been, J&J! Words cannot express how grateful I am to you both. Sorry I havent been commenting much due to my health. But whenever I get to watch your videos, I always end up smiling by the end of each video 🙂. Thank you guys, and also to our wonderful patrons and moderator for making this an incredible one for all of us 💜🙏🏻

Again,I want you guys to separate shonen poll and seinen poll, you can replace Haikyu with shonen but I think you should make seinen poll to replace AoT since DN had already replaced with shonen

BIG TD

Next time I think you should separate shonen poll and seinen poll

i would genuinely watch you guys reacting to manga lol 😂 especially considering some of the best series in the world are manga only (berserk, climber, vagabong etc) i know some people already do this type of stuff on youtube so just something to take into consideration

benjamin mc coggleworth jr the lll

i never finished this anime before, and i'm glad yall gave me a reason to watch it so i at least have seen it now 😅 i can see why it's such a well loved show, it's not really my type of show so i never would have made it through on my own. yall made it really fun to watch and i'm so glad you decided to share this journey with the world 🥰 i wanted to see Light suffer a bit more, but good writing means you can't just always do the most satisfying thing, it's interesting to stick with a more realistic approach to an ending. i also would have liked to see more "after Kira" world stuff but this ending lets the show end at it's peak and that's fine. i'm not a part of any anime fandom stuff really so i don't know any theories or fan made things that would make things more fun but i'm sure there's plenty out there 😄

fox

When I first read the manga and watched the anime, so many years ago, I was in shock for several days and I kept thinking about all the moral quandaries and twisted intricacies that had to go through the author's mind to come up with this story and from time to time, when I see inexplicable violence or nonsensical deaths in the world, it makes think that the author might have created the character of Light explore what would happen if somebody could take on the mantle of removing evil from a rotten world. What do you think were the author's motivations or mind set when he wrote Death Note? I do recommend you read the manga, a lot of things make much more sense and also there are gaps in the anime that are very well explained and developed for the story and the characters, in the manga. Thank you for all of your reactions, it has been a pleasure to rewatch this anime with you guys, I literally binge watched your reactions for the last 20 episodes in just one day. Greetings from Colombia. Keep on falling into the rabbit hole that is anime, you will just love it!

It has been fun to watch along with you guys, glad you shared this journey with us! Despite being into anime for well over a decade Death Note has remained one of my favorites. I find it so impressive how they manage to turn a story about a high schooler writing in a journal into a visually engaging, fast paced thriller. While I think the story is pretty timeless, the original comic was released 20 years ago, from 2003 to 2006. There are a number of plot points that are pretty specific to this period - they have the internet but no social media, smart phones don't exist yet, people mainly get news from the TV, ect. How do you guys think the story would change if it was set in the modern day instead? Or do you think it would play out mostly the same? In 2019 the authors of Death Note made a short story sequel to Death Note. It's only 88 pages but it answers some of your questions about what happens later to the world. In it Ryuk finds someone new to give the Death Note to and they use things like Twitter and facial recognition software in pretty creative ways. Its not necessarily great video reaction material, but you can check it out here if you want: https://www.viz.com/shonenjump/chapters/death-note-special-one-shot Or you can get the physical book "Death Note Short Stories" on Amazon or a bookstore. (If you've never read Japanese comics before do a bit of googling as they aren't read left to right like English comics) The Death Note comic was originally made by only two people: The writer Tsugumi Ohba and the illustrator Takeshi Obata. The next series they made - 'Bakuman' - is a semi-autobiographical retelling of the process of going from being lazy high school students to some of the most successful comic book authors in the world. There's a lot of super interesting stuff in there - Originally they wanted to make a straight action series along the lines of Dragon Ball or Naruto, but after failing at that had to iterate a lot before arriving at Death Note's style of cerebral "fights". They talk about about the feeling of anguish they feel after their story inspires real crimes to be committed (something that happened in real life with a number of high schoolers getting caught making 'Death Notes' of people they want to kill) They also talk about a lot of the internal decision making that went on with the decision to kill L, and whether to end the series there or keep going. Genuinely a super fun look at a lot of the business aspects and creative process of making a story like this.

I finally got to watch this! The end is so great. I love the delivery of Ryuk's final words in both the English and Japanese. He's so chill about it. I agree with the previous comments that it really reminds you who Ryuk is. I'm really glad you both liked the series so much and that it was your first anime. There's so much out there, you have one hell of a journey ahead of you. Here's a question... do you think you'll ever enjoy anime (in general) enough to attend anime conventions? If so, would you Cosplay?

Desdemona

What a fantastic final episode to cap off your Death Note journey! It's been an absolute treat to watch you boys react to this show. Death Note is one of my favorites, and I found your channel for the first time when you were close to the beginning. I loved how thorough you both were in your analysis and attention to detail from the very start, and your Patreon is the first I've ever joined. Y'all gave me the motivation to finally finish AOT as well, but that's for another video. This final episode always makes my heart break for Matsuda. This poor guy is put through the ringer along this entire crazy ride, and he finally sounds so defeated. He holds such a high level of respect for Chief Yagami from the start, and this extends to Light as they get to interact throughout the show. He holds out faith to the very end that surely Light cannot be Kira, that Chief Yagami's son cannot be Kira. When the truth is revealed and he falls to his knees, it feels like all of the pieces are sliding into place for him and he starts thinking about the implications of Light being Kira. That Light Yagami, who he's been defending and befriending this entire time, is the reason all of this is happening. That Light Yagami is reason that Soichiro Yagami, a man that Matsuda idolized, is dead. "You lead your own father to his death, and now that he's gone you call him a fool?" This line in English is permanently etched into my brain, the way the voice actor delivers it is so heartbreaking. As you mentioned, he's our Townsperson B, but he's also our audience stand-in. We can empathize with his sentiment that yes, killing people is wrong, but society might be a better place if some people were killed. Of course it helps that he's on the task force trying to catch Kira, and obviously draws a line at the direct action that Kira is taking. Throughout the series, he's sort of our lense into the entire situation. He doesn't make many breaks in the case by himself, as most of the investigation is being headed by L, as well as Light later on. I'd also like to push back against the idea of Matuda being an idiot. He's a little slow on the uptake, but he's capable of some solid reasoning all on his own. It's just hard to compare when you have a bunch of supergeniuses playing 5D chess all around you. He certainly seems to be more emotionally intelligent, though. He's a pretty personable guy and gets along with most of the people he interacts with. He's also gotta be a decent shot to hit Light's hand with as much as he was shaking. Him shooting Light felt almost cathartic, with all of the hell we've seen Light put others through. All the lives that Light has ruined or ended in pursuit of his goal, all the people that he's manipulated, Matsuda included. I think hearing Light laugh was the final straw. Matsuda could initially empathize with Kira's goal of creating a better world, but now after everything they've been through, everyone they've lost, to hear Light get such sick pleasure from all he's done was too much. Sorry for rambling, this has been a Matsuda Appreciation Post. Thank you guys for sharing this anime journey with us, and I'm excited to see y'all's reaction to the end of AOT!

Sarah P.

Don't judge my boy Light! Lol You think Light is Evil? If I had a Death Note I'd probably would of killed the men of this world and kept all the women for myself. And I would do so with the laugh of Kira. I would be "The Devil of the New World" 😂 But seriously. How I see it. The word "human" is a man made concept. We are really just animals. We're just sheeps and the government and law enforcement are the shepherds. But "The sheep spend their whole lives fearing the wolf, only to be eaten by the shepherd." We're all animals. So why do we look so surprise when "humanity" do animalistic things? It's like being shocked over a cat killing a squirrel. At the end of the day We're all just domesticated animals, trained morals that define us as humans to keep us in line. Can we blame Kira? His actions was driven by love. He loved the world and the people in it. It wasn't power he was lost to, It was love. He didn't want the world to suffer. He wanted to protect the world from suffering. How can we be disgusted over this Good man? 😂 He took actions to change the world into a better place. Selfless. If a good boy exist, Kira would be its definition. To save the world A "good boy" must become a man And get his hands dirty. Maybe he got his hands too dirty. But that's not the point. The point is that Kira is not Evil 😂 Like the famous quote "All it takes for 'evil' to exist is for 'good' people to do nothing." End quote. I admire Kira. But most of you people are like "EVIL!" *Spits* "Such reprehensible Behavior!!" We might not have a Death Note But we have the Death Tongue. How many suicides, deciet, lies, manipulation and pain had caused by our words? Infused with hatred, fear, anger and jealousy; our words becomes the pen and our tongue becomes the Death Note. Kira. Evil? HAHAHAHA! Impostourous! Superhero. Yes. Vilgilante For some But for most, A God!!!

Itachi Uchiha (Ericken)

I love the ending scene with Ryuk writing down Light's name Even though Ryuk has been eccentric throughout the show, the scene shows that at the end of the day, Ryuk is a shinigami, a God of Death

Niko

Wish u could read the epilogue manga chapter right after episode 37. Or do a read along in the next video. It shows what happen afterwards. (Read it from right to left) The latest chapter has a cameo of the president Dnld Tmp.

Sufiyaki Teriyaki

As much as I hate Light with my guts, I can't deny that in the world of the story, he really did make a positive change, even though it was with an Iron Fist. I still strongly believe the ending should have been different to what we got but it is what it is.

Jay

I would HIGHLY request J&J & everyone else to watch this 10-minute video in their own time regarding the logic of the final episode of the show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72nAfodPdRE I don't wanna be "that guy" and I thoroughly enjoyed Deathnote overall, but this video completely changed my view on the logic of the show's ending, and I'm interested to see if it'll change anyone else's mind.

Jay

Does Jordan still believe that Light was feeling any human emotion at his Father's death bed? Jordan stiil seemed to be holding on to Kira/ Light having some human( not beyond redemption) qualities. Jordan has this continued 'admiration' or something for Light, like he is a killer, "but".... What if Light used his "Genius" for good. Light's way of narcissistic thinking is the birth of despots, dictators etc. At the end Jordan still seems ambiguous about Light's morality.💜

genevieve higuera

I'm not mad but you totally butchered my last name LOL Everyone does, so no worries, but I'll leave speculation on the actual pronunciation up in the air for now. Very appreciative you addressed my question, thanks :D

Nathanael Crapo

Matsuda being the one to shoot Light was amazing btw. Hell yeah matsu!!

taetaebear01 (Lindsey E.)

My guy L was finally avenged, I am happy 🥰

taetaebear01 (Lindsey E.)

OMFG! The ending… You made it! Great reactions - truly! I absolutely love the analysis Jordon provided regarding Matsuda - MAD spot on! As well as Jared’s appreciation for the animation, and the resemblance of L’s death episode - amazing catch! Since you asked I’ve gone ahead and found some clips. The manga provides a similar but different experience of the ending. The explanation starts at the 2:04 mark https://youtu.be/6sml46UKs88?si=EfmipQTtkcWU2Mi3 Here’s the voice actor who plays Light https://youtu.be/lhz7rwfIKqg?si=v8pN9tFDWfDlSPEB. It’s a little eerie if you close your eyes and listen to him, he sounds like Light trying to act like a normal person, haha. I don’t really have any questions, so I’ll end this comment by saying thanks for giving anime a chance. It’s been a treat watching this series with you. Best of luck with the ‘no plastic’ journey - don’t beat yourselves up too much if it doesn’t stick right away, change is hard. Jared and Jordon, catch you in the next anime. Thank you for existing! <3

Sara

Ryuk always gets the last laugh and says when the fight's over. Ever since the beginning, he's been the one with the reins in his hands.

Big T

As well as the last three and a half minutes. I could be wrong but isn’t it a popular fan theory that the shinigami approaching Ryuk is Light?

Sara

i will always believe Kira was right. This delusional Mass murderer obsessed with judging evil people is the one who ultimately got rid of most evil in the world. The police et cetera were and will always be useless. He is the only reason why the world was peaceful. His death will make evil acts start again because evil people will feel free to do so.

KariaP

You guys need to watch the beginning scene from Relight. It'll blow your minds! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRO0eglarWU&ab_channel=pupaiplayz

MV

I mean it’s kind of amazing how light was almost able to win without even trying as he said that L would have considered the possibility of the fake notebook at the very beginning and tested and that goes both ways as Light would have a countermeasure it but it took Mello’s death and Mikami’s mistake for Near to trap Light without him even trying because he was blinded by his arrogance after L’s death which shows how smart both L and Light are compared to Near and Mello. PS: I do have a YouTube recommendation of a video 19 mins from the Avent YouTube channel called “death note but they are both Kira” that is very informative

Aqeeb Shahbaz

Great reactions to the series. I liked your analysis on Light's relationship with Matsuda, Misa, and Takada. I noticed the setting of the finale is very telling. Throughout the show and especially the finale, there have been many shots of the city, factories, and other industrial buildings/equipment, which represents modernization and the "new world" that Light was trying to be the god of. In many monologues before the finale, Light was standing on the peak of a building or some type of scaffolding in this type of setting, which is a contrast to the location of Light's final moments. The sunset in the last episode represents the literal the downfall of Light, and the moon in the final shot symbolizes his absence and end. I personally haven't been a huge anime fan but I do love the stories that many of them tell. I'll be here to stay for future reactions and excited to discover new content with y'all! Here's an unrelated question for you guys: Do you have a preference between more action heavy shows/movies or more slice-of-life/drama content?

Nate

I never noticed until this watch how demonic lights shadow looks during his red eyes laughing scene, kind of bad ass and fitting in my opinion, I really don't see him as human at the end of this show

Jinx's Baby Daddy(Brandon)

There’s a great fisherman/shark analogy I’ve heard that really made me appreciate the series and how the L and post-L storylines fit together. I’ll try not to butcher the explanation of it. It goes like this: In the first 25 episodes, L is like a fisherman plopped in the middle of the ocean who must fight a completely unknown enemy alone. He uses a net to slowly try and corner this enemy (finding out Light is in Japan, etc.), and a spear to make quick, unpredictable jabs (introducing himself in-person to Light). In the end, L dies to this enemy, but his net/spear have cornered/injured Light. Now, Near and Mellow get to start the fight with a huge advantage. Using the analogy, it’s like they now know the enemy is a shark (info about the Deathnote), and they know where in the ocean he is (connected to the Japanese police force). They also have the advantage that they are two people. Near only uses a net, as he’s very cautious, all the while the emotional, unpredictable Mellow uses a spear to poke and prod Light further into Near’s net, ultimately leading to his capture. I love this fisherman/shark analogy because it really encapsulates how big of a feat it is that L was able to put up a fight against Light in the first place, and also how important his contributions were to allow Near and Mellow to defeat him in the end.

Kevin

Here’s a scene from Deathnote Relight 2, which is a directors cut of the anime that includes some deleted scenes. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mFgI_6JPvHo I actually searched for and found this clip awhile ago because I listen to a lot of Anime Hardstyle music, and several songs would include a speech by L that I knew I hadn’t heard before in the series. I was so happy when I found where it came from, enjoy the scene!

Kevin

I must gather my thoughts in preparation for one of my long winded comments lol but I am so happy I tagged along in your journey watching this show. What a fun time you guys are and I'm glad you enjoyed the finale!

silly goose #1 mahito simp

truly a perfect ending in my opinion. hyped to see you guys end death note fully and move onto the next series 🫡

gdnsx

The ending of Death Note left many of us fans sort of depressed and feeling bad for Light.. even the ones who were against him throughout the whole series. Light was just a normal yet highly intelligent high school student who could have achieved great things in life but too much power made him evil and ruined his own life along with the lives of his loved ones.. Thank you for your amazing reactions to one of the best anime series guys :) it's been so fun

its_aliza

the symbolism of light dying on the middle of the stairs, insinuating he’s neither going to hell or heaven because ryuk had told him since the beginning that whoever used the notebook goes to neither heaven nor hell. Also I think Misa at the end where she was on top of the building was to insinuate that she jumped sadly :(

deiji’

Thank you so much Zugzwang for taking the time to write this wonderful explanation.. Even though I've watched DN before but I was still confused on how exactly Near found out Light's plan

its_aliza

Seems you're having trouble understanding just how Mello saved the day, so allow me to explain to the best of my ability. The setup which Light, Takeda, and Mikami were using involved Mikami sending Takeda pages from the real notebook every month. This is why Mikami went to the bank "every month on the 25th" as Gevanni stated. He was taking pages out of the real notebook which was kept in the safe deposit box and sending those pages to Takeda via a fan-mail letter. Takeda was using these pages to kill the criminals sent to her by Mikami every day, while Mikami was writing their names in his fake notebook. Mikami's monthly trips to the bank didn't raise suspicion before Takeda's kidnapping, because there are a multitude of reasons why a prosecutor might need to go to the bank every month. Both Mello and Near knew that Takeda was the go-between for Mikami and Kira, meaning that kidnapping her would interrupt the method of communication between the true Kira and Mikami as well as create a spontaneous, unaccounted-for need to use the death note, thereby allowing Mello to control Mikami's actions and give the investigation more information. At the time of her kidnapping, neither Near nor Mello likely knew that Takeda herself was the one who was actually performing the killings. Near was still under the impression Mikami was killing people with the fake notebook. When Mello ended up dead, Light was put in a situation where Takeda needed to be disposed of. Allowing her to be rescued from the truck would have potentially exposed his fake notebook plan to Near, because she would have had to explain how Mello died of a heart attack, what she was doing with notebook pages, and potentially a multitude of other questions the SPK or the Task Force would have for her. Burning everything prevented any of these questions from being asked and covered up the fact Takeda was the one killing criminals and not Mikami. Because Mikami knew how big of a liability Takeda was if left alive, he felt the need silence her after hearing of her kidnapping, so he went to the bank for the second day in a row. Gevanni realized that he was breaking off from his usual pattern and checked his safe deposit box to find the real notebook with Takeda's name written inside. This revealed to the SPK that the notebook Mikami was writing on at home was a fake. Mello threw the wrench into Light's plan that Near needed to get the full picture.

Zugzwang

That apparition/image/whatever you’d like to imagine it was of L being the last thing Light sees always gives me shivers. Direct mirror to Light hunching over L and being the last thing he saw as his eyes closed.

Sia

The ending of the Anime is actually quite diffrent from the Manga. I can't tell all the differences here in this comment but maybe someone can show you the ending of the Manga (the Manga also has great art). Anyways thank you for the great reaction, much love to both of you <3
