AOT 3x18 Reaction!! *THE GREATEST EPISODE EVER!*
Added 2024-05-08 19:07:47 +0000 UTC
HOLY HAJIME. This was the greatest episode of AOT that we have seen thus far (though one could make an argument for 3x17 being the greatest). This episode brought to life the refrain that Mikasa has stated over and over again: The world is CRUEL, but also very BEAUTIFUL.

oh man... so I'm playing catch up and on a binge
all i can say is... I'm in shock and relief and just wow...
Also it's a little ironic how Bertholdt was thinking "Is this really how it ends for you? Alright i'll make it quick for you" in the last episode when Armin was tethered to Berthildt's tooth ... just the Irony of how this episode ended... man just crazy

This episode has so many incredible yet understated moments in it.
My favourite moment in the series is when Eren is pleading with Levi to save Armin. The line "Avenging my mum... killing the titans... the only thoughts in my head are full of hate! But he's not like that! Armin cares about more than just fighting! He has dreams!" gets me every single time. Yuki Kaji does an absolutely incredible job voice acting in this scene - there's so much genuine emotion, desperation and heartbreak in his delivery.
It also shows just what has been driving Eren up to this point: Rage and hate. In a way his drive for freedom is a symptom of that hatred - it wasn't until Armin showed him that book about outside the walls that he knew he wasn't free, and that the titans were to blame. We got the shot of Eren lying in his bed as a child, glaring at the injustice of it all, thinking that he'd never forgive them for stealing his freedom.
Meanwhile Armin's reaction to that book is one of wonder and curiosity, someone who just wants to see what is out there just for the sake of geting to see it, to experience it. He doesn't expect anything from it, like Erwin with the basement or Eren with his freedom. It's a pure dream without selfish intent.
You say you don't feel any sympathy for Bertholdt getting eaten, which I can understand, but there's a quick moment in that scene when he wakes up which is often missed:
Initially upon waking and realising he's in the hands of a titan he panics, looks around and upon seeing the others, looks relieved that they're there - that they'll save him. Then there's the moment of realisation that he isn't a soldier, he's a warrior and that he's fought against them. That's when he starts begging for Annie and Reiner to help.
This moment shows that Bertholdt was telling the truth back in Season 2 when he said it wasn't all a lie, that they truly considered them comrades. He was telling Armin the truth when he said that all of them were "precious comrades" to him. In the moments before his death, Bertholdt forgot that he wasn't a soldier, and looked to his friends for help.
Lastly, Erwin Smith told Levi in the No Regrets OVA "If you begin to regret, you'll dull your decisions and let others make your choices for you. All that's left for you then is to die." In the final battle, Erwin asked Levi what he would do, what decision he'd make. He sat down and in the end, Levi made the decision for him: To give up on his dream and die. Erwin looks surprised and then relieved; relieved to not have to make the choice between his dream or humanity's victory. In the end, Erwin thanks Levi for making the choice for him, for allowing him to be freed from being a slave for his dream. At that moment, Erwin let someone else make the choice and so all that was left to do was die.

One of my favorite chapters.. top5
I think that when Erwin raises his hand Levi just realized that Erwin had no dreams or future other than going/seeing the basement.
On the other hand, Armin had a bigger dream, for the future, he had goals.. Erwin just wanted to prove that his father was right but what then?? That's why in the last episodes they constantly show us Levi pressuring Erwin, if there was something else.
And it wasn't like that :c
RIP Erwin, we love you.
PS: the first time I saw this episode, when they show the titan (obviously Armin, he is just like the human Armin) I kept believing it was Erwin.. i told like ok .. he only looks like Armin xd cried for Armin, i had let him go and when they show that Erwin is still on the roof, right there I realized that it wasn't him the choosen.
i cried like crazy
You hurt me, Isayama.

Okay now I can finally blabber on about what I've been wanting to say this whole time. These entire last few episodes since before they were planning this expedition was just a massive foreshadowing of what was to come. Of course, we know this now after watching what just happened. I think the beautiful nature of rewatching this series is that you can pinpoint exactly when Levi kind of already makes up his mind IMO. Him eavesdropping outside the trio's conversation and overhearing about Armin's desire to expand and go to the sea is what, i think, solidified his choice in the end. Erwin's own plan wasn't as thought-out as Levi expected. Erwin and Armin constantly had parallels to each other throughout this season and even in the first for this exact reason.
Calling back to Levi's prior conversation to what Erwin planned to do because he might not be around any longer, I also personally think this was Levi's way of potentially protecting Erwin not only from death because of war, but also himself from the exact decision he had to do and let Erwin die.
Erwin's decision to let Levi choose who to save is such a heavy burden to carry, and the decision to let his commander but also friend die is one what I always think about when I watch this show. It's all about no regrets and choices and freedom, but I think Levi encapsulates these ideals in a manner that is both realistic and yet heartbreaking. I can write on and on about Levi's characterization because he's written so well and dynamically changes throughout situations in this show.

Maybe I'm wrong, but if Ervin get the serum, he would get back his arm to, because titans can simply grow it back. Don't think it's matter that he lost it earlier.
I also think, that Ervin just hallucinated, that he is asking his father about people outside the walls. That simply gave Levi a few more seconds to think, what was enough to change his mind.

*first time watcher*
Arghh!! This one got me.. For real 😣🫢🥺😭
~ The moment I heard Armin gasp.. I paused, went to watch this ep fully on my own first, then continued with J&J ~
Although this totally broke me, I decided this deserves my detailed thoughts. So, its gonna be a long one.
In response to J&J: To me, I think both Zeke and Eren were pretty shocked to see each other. But yes, IMPECCABLE. I am with both of you. Emotions overload. NO, I did NOT expect Armin to be alive after what we’ve seen.
Now, for my thoughts:
Seeing how it ended in the last ep, I made a guess that we might see what happened from the post-credit scene in P1. But never would I have guessed its the ultimatum. Who. Gets. The. Injection. This was one emotional rollarcoaster, tears of extreme sadness and of relief 😭. Good lord, this is one after another huh.
I KNEW Zeke has got something to do with Grisha! I just couldnt explain why he is blond, when Grisha isnt. Now, I could only think he took after his mother, so Grisha not only had Carla, but possibly one before her. “We’re both victims of your father.”- now THAT, makes me think he might be Eren’s half-brother 🤯. I dont know about the “brainwashed by him” part, but I am going on the basis we dont know much about the other world. Its still shocking to know this now nonetheless.
Just imagining Levi appearing on the top, after having wiped out the crazy number of Titans standing around the perimeter, including the Beast, was craaaazyyy.
With R- Glad I wasnt overthinking when I heard that metal sound from R’s pocket before. But I did wonder where Ymir was (I actually thought she might have been in the other barrel). And I did not see any Titan with Ymir’s power, so I can only assume atp shes still alive, somewhere. I honestly dont blame Jean for trying to stop Hange. He did raise a very important point about them not knowing all there is about the enemy, similar to what Armin has said countless times. And Hange is not wrong either, for wanting to kill R without even knowing for sure if chopping his head off would end R. They have lost too much atp as well. Jean’s super quick reflexes saved our Hange! Omg I jumped back when it happened. As a viewer, I have to remember I cannot let my own guard down 😮💨
Argh, I could feel my tears welling up again.
To see that both Armin and Erwin were still alive, barely. To think that Levi, after all that he had already gone through, had to make such a difficult choice. Unfortunately, Erwin was right. Levi is indeed the best person to do this. Not cos’ he was the one who brought back this ‘gift’ from Kenny, but this man’s ability to stay level headed and yet empathetic in such a situation is remarkable. The emotions displayed by Eren and Mikasa, as well as Hange and Floch, argh, couldnt have done it any better. The facts and events that were all laid out were PERFECTLY TIMED and much needed, not just for the characters to be aware, but for the viewer too. Its a reminder to me at least, that you cant measure which side had a ‘better’ argument than the other. Its not about which dying soul deserves the injection more, essentially. IMPECCABLE.
Hange, holding back Mikasa at first but in the end, hugging her, was a testament to remember all those we’ve lost. We want to remember Marlo (in previous ep), Moblit and also the veterans who sacrificed their lives. RIP 😔. The deaths are piling, with those we barely know to those whom we’ve grown to love.
What broke me was seeing Eren, trying his best to still speak, despite his broken teeth and through tears. Argh 💔. This was as strong, if not stronger than when he lost Hannes.
“Everyone..was a slave to somethin’.” Man, that is so true. Erwin with that last gesture was heartbreaking. If he knowingly or unknowingly had his whole life flashed in front of him but hinged on THAT very first moment as a kid, nothing better would have portrayed that. RIP, Commander Erwin Smith 🫡😭
The absence of bgm throughout, excellent way to grab the viewer’s attention, solely on what’s happening. Up to this point, then bringing in Levi’s memory of what he last told Erwin, along with every feel possible 💔
The scene of B realising that the scouts were watching, while he was about to get eaten by Titan Armin, Im reminded of Marco. Despite everything, when B screamed for R and Annie, I cant help but feel for him too. RIP Bertholdt 😔 That literally gave me goosebumps.
Its very fitting that only Levi and Hange were beside Erwin in his last moments. Even when Erwin cant speak for himself on what he had put Floch and the recruits through, I believe Levi hoped that his words may give Floch some light to the true nature of Erwin.
When Levi spoke to Erwin that he promised to kill the Beast, but its gonna have to wait, Hange realised hes dead and Levi gasped. 💔 It reminded me of the time we saw Levi hold one of the dying scout’s bloodied hand, and in that, I believe he was glad that that scout would have heard what he said just before he died. But maybe not this time, with Erwin. Argh 🥺😣
Seeing Armin again and the rest surrounding him, gosh that made me tear up again. I cant help but think now, about how Armin would feel or even react once he wakes up, knowing that he was chosen to receive the injection, ate B and is the new C. ~ ABC~
SO MUCH HAPPENED. This is overwhelming. I hope I captured most of my thoughts here. Thank you J&J, for allowing me to experience AOT with you, and to the community, who have been very kind to us, first-time watchers. 💜🙏🏻

I agree, as much as they would have been heartbroken, they are understanding enough to realize that the decision that was made wasn't up to them. I think Mikasa's grudge against levi might become even more personal, and eren would defiantly lose a lot of will that would take time to take back, but I don't think it would lead to rebellion.

Perhaps, but i don't really see any convincing evidence that Erwin would fail or Armin would be better.
*slight spoiler for season 4*
With Erwins understanding of how to navigate politics and compel people to fight for his cause, erwin would have DOMINATED season4. I personally think the reason he had to die here was because we wouldn't have the same plot if erwin was around. But that's just my opinion, I love Aot for this reason, many different people can have different opinions about the same media without anyone being wrong.

I love your perspective, however, which strategist is the best in war? The one who has the guts to sacrifice others (as it’s often unavoidable) or the one who has a weak heart for harming others? Which type of leader is more apt for victory?
I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. AoT is just THAT GOOD! It generates such deep philosophical discussion.

Looks like this is a very biased comment that is narrow minded from your point of view so allow me to correct you.
Yes the majority of armins plans succeed but so do Erwin’s and I argue that Erwin’s victories are more significant.
Here are Erwin’s plans in this show
1. Female titan arc: he deduces there is a spy and manages to capture her. Failure only came from Annie using an unknown titan ability.
2. Stohess battle: caught Annie despite civilian casualty
3. Overthrowing the government: this is in my opinion the biggest victory in the show, without this happening then the entire rest of the show wouldn’t have happened.
4. Rod Reiss battle: best rod at orvud district after correctly predicting an open mouth target.
5. Plan to defeat the armoured titan in shiganshina
6. Plan to defeat the beast titan worked.
You say Erwin failed to get the beast titans power but that is incredibly wrong. From Erwin’s point of view the plan succeeded. Levi hesitated to kill zeke which resulted in losing him, that had nothing to do with erwin

I don’t know about you guys, but for me, the decision between Armin and Erwin was obvious. If you wanted humanity to survive and thrive within the walls, choose Erwin, but if you want humanity to expand past the walls and into the outside world, you need Armin. His mental ability with his dreams about the outside world, not to mention he would also get the colossal titan’s powers, is capable of helping humanity expand way past the walls which is something Erwin cannot do. This is just my opinion, let me know what you guys think.

Ngl this episode reminds me of the real life implications of the life saving decisions made every day by families making the ultimate decision when someone is on life support. Providing the gift of organ donation isn’t easy and the decision of who receives that gift isn’t always just a matter of who is next on list. There are many factors in place that make these choices extremely difficult for all those involved.
I agree with Jordan. I see Erwin flinging his arm away from the syringe, making his own choice. I don’t know if the manga specifies this or not.
RIP Erwin 🙏

Please watch the end credits in the next episode!!!
Also, as Hange being my favourite AOT character, seeing my man Moblit saving Hange's life will never not make me teary-eyed. In my several rewatchs, I see how much this man cared for Hange and he's there by their side ALL-THE-TIME, asking them to be careful and not to be so crazy 😊
(Fun fact: Hajime Isayama confirmed that Hange is a non-binary character in the manga, although they depicted them female in the animation. He also instructed the publishers of the English translation of Attack on Titan to avoid gendered pronouns when referring to them, or at least use “he” and “she” with equal frequency when gender neutral pronouns cannot be used.) I think that's pretty cool 😊✨

One thing that I always think about in this episode is that when trying to decide on who to use the syringe on, Hange says that Armin lacks the experience and leadership that Erwin has. But in the last couple episodes we got a good glimpse at the kind of leaders both Armin and Erwin are. Both were faced with impossible opponents (Erwin vs the beast titan and Armin vs the colossal titan). Erwin devised a plan that sacrificed all most all the soldiers under his command whereas Armin was able to devise a plan that sacrificed only himself. Maybe there was no other solution to either battle, and it would be interesting to see how each operated in the other's situation. But we've seen many times that Erwin doesn't hesitate to sacrifice soldiers to win. I think Armin's ability to find another solution and minimize the sacrifice at the cost of his own life is what really convinced me that he was the correct choice in this situation.

I really liked the flashback that Levi had to Kenny saying that everybody had to be "drunk" on something to keep pushing, because I think this was meant to have us question this insane decision in the same way that Levi was. Once Erwin reaches the basement, will he no longer be able to keep pushing? Will he find something else to be "drunk" on? His life's aims have been answered. (Plus Levi told Erwin to die and Erwin seemed to have come to peace with it.) Whereas Armin has different motivations. He wants to see the outside world, the seas, the deserts, etc. Armin will continue to be drunk on something until the very end.

First time watcher here.
Okay, I figured they were gonna use the syringe and I figured it’d be for Armin. But I should’ve known that situation was too ‘easy’. Having Erwin in the mix made things difficult. I was telling myself, “no, humanity has no chance without Armin.” But before this, I neglected the fact that I also felt that way for Erwin too. I figured he’d died in his last fight and that was that. I wasn’t able to process it yet, but accepted that. Seeing him there, knowing there was a possibility for him to live, I was conflicted too. He’s part of the reason humanity has gotten as far as they’ve gotten. But I read someone’s comment here about Erwin being the one they needed to get to the basement and Armin being the one they need to get pass the walls. That makes all the sense in the world.
Erwin’s dream was to get to the basement, prove his father’s theory. Although he died before he could see what was in the basement, I feel like he died knowing his comrades would achieve his dream for him. I think that’s why he was able to accept that he’d die in his last command. Armin, on the other hand, his dream is to see the world beyond the walls. To experience life in all its beauty despite everything. He wants everyone to see that for themselves as well, which is why he’s going to FIGHT to save humanity. He’s needed to save humanity. They would never survive without him.
Gosh this episode was heartbreaking. I sobbed at the end. Seeing Armin alive made me so happy but knowing that Erwin is dead, shattered my heart. It was most definitely a bittersweet moment. I just started thinking about all the times Erwin was there. Every episode and moment with him. That’s ERWIN and he’s really gone now. Man an absolute legend.
As for Armin, I think these past few episodes set him up well. Hange said he doesn’t have the leadership experience Erwin has, and she’s right. However, he’s going to get there. He has the instincts and the genius. We saw how Erwin handed him control, he’s made to lead in one way or another. He’ll learn. Also, I’m scared he’s going to go through a veryyy different change in terms of his optimism. How is he going to feel knowing it was either him or Erwin. I hope we won’t, but i feel like he’s gonna wonder wether he was worthy or not. And if he can do the job as a Titan. But I’m excited to see Titan Armin era.
And HANGE, my girl is alive!!!! I’m so glad. I feel like so much was going on, we can’t process everything but I was not ready to see an AOT where she’s not there. She’s essential to survival as well; they need her. I’m sad Moblit died tho.

This episode never fails to illicit tears. I've seen it 6 times now and every time is the same. It amazes me how they captured the intensity and emotion that comes with potentially losing a loved one. Then add in one of the most difficult decisions that a person could make, who lives and who dies. It is, in my opinion, one of the best episodes in TV.
Also wanted to remind you that last season you said something along the lines of 'Not much else Hajime can throw at us" and I commented " remember you said that". Well, this last 2 episodes and next season is what I was referring to, so as I said before, strap in boys, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

No he remembered what he’d done, but in that moment of traumatic desperation, he forgot he wasn’t a soldier, and called out to his precious comrades for help. Then you can see the moment he remembers that he’s a warrior who fought against them and so calls out to Annie and Reiner for help. It’s basically proof that Bertholdt truly saw them as friends and comrades like he said before.

I feel like both Levi and Hange both lost the people they were closest to, their confidants and companions. We often saw Levi and Erwin as well as Hange and Moblit together, whether they were working or going about daily life. Moblit would keep Hange in check and watch out for their well-being, while Levi would challenge Erwin as an equal while also backing him up every single step of the way.
Hange witnessed Moblit be consumed by fire after using his last ounce of strength to push them to safety into the well. I loved that Hange was initially physically holding back Mikasa and as Mikasa was convinced to stop fighting the issue, it turned into Hange physically comforting her to the point where it looked like Mikasa was holding onto Hange for dear life as she resigned herself. In that moment, I don't think Hange felt they could deal with losing both Moblit and Erwin at the same time.
The entire time since the suicide charge was decided as the one course of action, I believe Levi was already mentally preparing to use the syringe on Erwin should he survive and not die on impact of the boulders. Yet, Levi decided to ultimately let Erwin rest despite wanting Erwin to eat the Beast and have him continue leading the Scouts. That factored into the opening the Quad titan had to swoop in and snatch away Zeke. I feel this highlights Levi was willing to accept Erwin's death should it happen definitively, but he was also ready to fight to preserve Erwin, should he be injured yet alive. And still, Levi freed Erwin from this cruel world instead of forcing him to keep shouldering more of the hell they live in. Erwin's heartfelt smile and gratitude towards Levi during their last conversation still live rent free in my heart.
In contrast to you guys, I actually feel heavier after this episode lol but thats just because I feel as strongly about Erwin, as yall do about Armin. Nonetheless this series of episodes will always be favorites of mine and yalls reaction was exceptional as always!

I think the flashbacks that Levi had about hearing Armin talking to Eren and Mikasa and Levi's and Erwin's conversation are commonly overlooked. I have a feeling that Levi knew that Armin would have been the better choice. We see Levi remember that Erwin said he wouldn't know what to do after reaching the basement as his will to live, fight, and lead humanity to victory was all built on his dream to reach the basement one day. Levi sees flashbacks of him overhearing Armin's talk about the sea with Eren and Mikasa at the same time as his flashbacks of Erwin, and also Kenny saying "Everybody had to be drunk on somethin' to keep pushing on." I think that all of these memories at once let him realize that after reaching the basement, Erwin could lack the necessary conviction to lead humanity to victory, but Armin would keep moving ever forward.

Erwin is a never-ending sun.
For Levi, and for all other humanity.
This episode, "Midnight sun", was a story about Levi's love for him.
Thank you for your amazing reactions always.

One thing to also note is when Bert gets eaten at the end, he appears to wake up from his sleep as his body has regenerated enough to allow him bodily function (similar to how Ymir was unconcious in season 2 when getting kidnapped).
He screamed out for Reiner, Annie and the others help most likely because (like Reiner with the Thunder speaers) he couldn't remember what or or how he got there. This means he died not knowing what he did while watching his friends feed him to a titan ☹️

I had so much fun experiencing this episode again with you guys, I can't wait for the rest of the season!
I wanted to point out something most people get wrong about Levi's decision and clarify some misconceptions.
It's easy to turn this into an Erwin V. Armin thing where they compare who has or could do more for humanity, but in my opinion, Levi's decision had almost nothing to do with that. if that was the case, Erwin would have been 100% the one injected. The decision was made based on who he was willing to set free from the thing they were enslaved to. Floch's outburst had a significant effect on Levi's decision that most people tend to forget. Even though Floch is saying Erwin should be the one to live, the reason behind it isn't because he likes and trusts Erwin more but because Erwin should have to live through this hell bc he's a devil and the only one who can sacrifice lives and his own humanity for society to advance. Levi also realized this and concluded that Erwin doesn't deserve that. That Erwin was forced to lose his child-like innocence of wanting to see the world (that Armin now has), in favor of overcoming political and military obstacles. And these situations caused Erwin to build the pile of bodies he feels guilty for. People call Erwin ruthless and uncaring for the lives he's commanded to end, but he has always felt the guilt, and the guilt became more overbearing than his dream. That's why Erwin accepts his death when Levi tells him to forget his dream and die. He even thanks Levi because Levi had set him free of the dream he was enslaved to. None of this had to do with Armin vs. Erwin, Levi's decision to save Armin was made entirely as a mercy to Erwin.
I also think Isayam is quite funny for making Levi the one to have to make this decision because Levi was originally sent to the survey corps to assassinate Erwin, and even claimed in the OVA that he was the one that was going to do it. Mission accomplished ig? T_T

It's such a good episode. I knew the outcome and it was still intense. Of course, watching your reactions really added to the experience too.
It's interesting what sticks with us. For me, the Armin scenes in the last episode. I love the brief scene where he's floating in front of the colossal titan's face. Little bitty Armin and this massive beast, yet he's placing himself right there, where Bertolt could easily kill him. I love that scene.

I just want to point out that this episode is 90% us deciding which of the 2 characters we think should live and which one we should let die. That's such a simple concept, but the fact that not a single moment in those 22 minutes did I (or anyone else watching) ever look away or get bored says everything you need to know.
Most shows wouldn't be able to do something like this because nothing in AOT is as simple as black and white. But because the level of story telling is so goddam high and each character is so incredibly multi-dimensional, you're kept on the edge of your seat all the time, immersed in the moment with the characters feeling exactly what they're feeling.

Don’t forget the after credits scene in the next episode, 3x19! It’s very important. Also, might as well listen through the credits to get to it since you guys haven’t seen them yet anyway.
And in some episodes for the rest of S3, please don’t be afraid to pause / rewind as much as needed. AoT fans are very used to reactions to these episodes being very long, so we expect it! Can’t wait! 🔥

Just wanted to add to all these great comments my opinion on how selfless of a decision it was for Levi to choose Armin. As much as both the characters in the show and the fanbase discuss the Armin/Erwin choice in logical terms of which is best, I think at the deepest layer everyone is essentially arguing for their friend to live.
Levi has gone through a tremendous amount of loss in his life. His mother, his childhood, Furlan, Isabel, S1 Levi Squad, Miche + many older elite soldiers in S2. For the first time an opportunity finally presented itself to save one of the only people left he’s truly close with, and it was entirely within his power to do it.
In addition to the different dreams, logical reasons, etc. for choosing Armin, the fact Levi could still essentially choose the option that causes himself the most suffering is crazy, and a big reason why he’s humanity’s strongest soldier.

It hurt my heart seeing Eren plead and talk about how different Armin’s outlook is. He has hope, he has dreams beyond the wall and fighting, he is what humanity needs to look forward into the future. Commander Erwin is so great but he didn’t know what he wanted beyond finding out the truth in the basement. That’s what he was drunk on to keep moving forward. What would push him to keep “being the devil” when he finds out the truth? Armin had the drive that would not cease and I think that is what influenced Levi’s decision on top of the fact he wanted Commander Erwin to finally lay down his burdens 💔❤️😭 what a great episode

R.I.P Moblit and Marlo too 🥺 they went out like true heroes staying loyal and faithful to humanity till the very end.. threw their precious lives and comfort away for the greater good.
R.I.P to all the brave new recruits who despite being drowned in fear and hopelessness, chose to give up their lives and dreams on Erwin's command on their very FIRST mission outside the walls
Also I just want to say that even tho Mikasa does mostly follow Eren in anything he does but this time she was fighting Levi solely for Armin.. her best friend! Armin is as precious to Mikasa as Eren is but in a different way

Amazing episode! Im glad you pointed out Kenny’s speech being replayed. I think many people don’t consider it for Levi’s decision. Erwin was “drunk” on reaching the basement. He didn’t have a goal or direction in mind beyond that. Armin has a larger goal of the sea and seeing the outside world. Erwin was basically at the end of his journey either way

2024-05-08 20:21:52 +0000 UTC
The reason Levi chose Armin over Erwin can be explained by Kenny's quote, "Everybody had to be drunk on something to keep pushing on. Everybody was a slave to something." Erwin found meaning in life through his desire to prove his father's theory correct, which is why he was so fixated on reaching the basement. Had Erwin lived to see the basement, he would have lost the very thing that gave his life purpose. All while continuing to suffer from knowing that so many scouts have died under his command. Whereas, Armin has dreams beyond the walls. He wants to see the sea, and he's optimistic about the future. Levi understood that, which is why he ultimately decided to give Armin the injection and let Erwin finally rest. RIP Commander Erwin Smith

Erwin is the goat and there's a lot to say in his side of the choice being made, but I do think so far Armin has had more successful plans in terms of outcome. Erwin did his best but usually lost in the end, Armins ideas usually worked out the way he planned, humanity benefited from Armin the most at the end of the day. Even for their sacrifices in this battle, Erwin 100% sacrificed himself and still didn't get the beast Titan as planned, Armin 100% sacrificed himself and they did capture Bert exactly as planned.

35:24 i LOVE that you guys noticed the scene where erwin raises his hand. it has so much significance and so many different meanings. main one being that he was also curious about the outside world just like armin is. so in a sense erwin wanted armin to find out about the outside rather than him. he left his "dream" in the hands of armin. RIP ERWIN the GOAT
