3 of my favorite episodes in the whole show (S3x16-18). Can't believe you two are finally here. Jared, you had the same side to side anxiety rock that I had, when I watched for the first time LOL. And it doesn't matter how much I rewatch, I still get the same anxious, heart-wrenching, goosebump-inducing feeling to the point where I cry. Television at it's absolute FINEST. It makes no difference that this is animated. The action, the visuals, and most importantly the emotions, are all there.

Neha

I know for a fact that, if told I have to go charging to my death, I would react exactly like the girl who puked. My whole body would be trembling, and I'd be thinking, 'If there's the slightest chance I could escape this, I will take it.' But then, I'd look up at my leader, at Erwin Smith, telling me that my death won't be meaningless, that it would give meaning to the sacrifices of those who went before me, that it would GAIN meaning through the sacrifices that will be made by those who will come after me. And I guess I would realise that there are indeed things worth dying for, and if by my death humanity as a whole could get closer to victory and the truth, then so be it. At any rate, if all my comrades died and I only survived because I had slunk off like a coward, I would never be able to live with myself. And so, I would follow my leader to my death, and my only wish would be that it's swift and painless...

Ushna Seeam

I think we all would like to think that we will obey those orders by Erwin and charge to our deaths. But we all are human. We all want to escape this mad world in any way. So naturally we would think to run and somehow escape even if we are the only one left. But if I'm being honest, not obeying Erwins orders and waiting for something and then trying to run out of this situation is even scarier to me. Because we don't know when our deaths will occur. Whereas if we just charge to our deaths, we know when it happens and it's gonna be quick. I think if I'm gonna die anyways, I'd want it to be over quick without me getting time to go through any emotions. Incredibly dark, selfish and inconsiderate of anyone, anything or any emotions. I know. But I think that's the beauty of this show. (On a light note: please don't make me a villain in the comments😂😅)

Nandy_AS

DON'T READ THIS UNLESS U WATCHED UP TO EPISODE 19‼‼‼‼‼‼ (I'm writing this assuming u guys have watched episode 18 and 19) What i wanted to say was i'm glad someone was just as hurt as me about Armin's "death". I know a lot of reactors are. But idk the way Jordan reacted to it was just like me the first time. Armin's has always been my favorite character ever since season 1. And the people that piss me off the most in the fandom are the toxic Erwin stans. THEY LOVE FLAMING ARMINS CHARACTER. Yet again its toxic masculinity at it's finest. They don't see Armin as a "great character" because i quote "He can't fight even if his life depended on it." Meaning he's seen as a weak character. This is why i can't stand anime fans sometimes. A lot of us prefer characters that just fight and fight with no character personality. But can we appreciate characters like Armin? Characters with great minds, genius plans, courage AND SO MUCH MORE. People don't understand strength is so much more than just physical strength. Armin is one of humanitys biggest weapons, biggest strengths. LIKE ERWIN SAID HIMSELF. Erwin is my 2nd favorite character in the show. But like come on?? Toxic Erwin fans r the worst. They still TODAY go on about how Erwin should have been the one inheriting the colossal. LIKE GIVE ME A BREAKKKKKK. I DON'T CARE. SAVING ARMIN WAS A GOOD CHOICE FIGHT ME

Gatha Naranath

"I don't mean to gloss over Erwins death" Man's gonna have a tough time in the next episode

something is off about this reaction idk really maybe is the music thats different??

We trust in our comrades to find meaning in our lives 😭💔😫

I’d like to think by joining the Scouts, I have accepted my death and thus would welcome a heroic death. Never know in the moment though

It shows just how much Erein cared for his dead comrades. He was willing to sacrifice his life, just like every other dead scout who gave their lives. He switched up with real emotion when giving that speech, he spoke the truth.

Senor Confused

LETS FUCKING GOOOO

Rahma

It comes across better in the dub, though I think both are funny.

Kel

I think if I’m being honest, my first instinct in that situation would be like Floch’s. I’d want to run. But there’s also the fact that I’d never make it back home trying to fight off titans by myself, so I’d probably die there anyway. I think once Erwin gave his speech, I’d change my mind. He has a way of inspiring us to give all we have, and in the end he would sway me to be brave.

Kel

To answer y’all’s questions: What would I do if I were in the new recruits position? -If I made the decision to join the scouts, I would like to think that I was fully aware of what I was getting into but when the moment comes where you are told to sacrifice yourself it can be really scary. I would be hesitant and first instinct would be to save myself but if I heard Erwin’s speech and knew that my sacrifice would help humanity, I would willingly give my heart for the cause. How did you react when first watching? -when I first watch I was filled with hopelessness because the scouts were dying left and right. However near the end of the episode, Erwin’s speech filled me with so much adrenaline like I was about to charge into war myself! Are we gonna be okay? lol I would hope so, however this show will make its impact on you in numerous ways. This story is amazing and re watching it with y’all has made me seen little things I did not notice before. I can’t help but keep coming back to this show because in my opinion, it’s one of the best stories ever since it has so many parallels to our world today. AND LAST QUESTION: Has AOT started? -No, but you will know when it does because it will be too much to keep up with

Katelynn Gonzales

Connie's joke makes no sense unless you speak japanese, i believe yeager sounds similar to "home" in japanese. so he was making a pun about erens house being thrown in the air by the collosal.

Jens B

I agree with others when they say watch the speech in dub because it is one of the best pieces of dubbed anime imo

damn.. this episode and the few following it never fail to make me cry a river.. watching with you guys feels like a fresh and whole new experience and I hope you two are doing okay too 🥹

its_aliza

Lmao I finally get Connie's joke. Ie as a noun is house in Japanese. Ga is particle translated like "is" so when he's saying Eren no Ie Ga, "Erens house", he starts laughing because Eren no Ie ga sounds just like Eren Jaeger the way it's pronounced in Japanese

Slayer91340

Fyi. Connys joke about "evesdropping" is a poor translation. He picked a bad time to make a pun that specifically works in Japanese.

*first time watcher* This has gotta be one of the darkest episodes so far. Seeing how each of them react in these desperate situations, very disturbing. And the massive destruction, as haunting as the image of the mountain of dead scouts. I dont think Erwin could show this vulnerable side of himself to anyone else in this battle, other than to Levi. And possibly no one else, other than Levi, would give it to Erwin straight and real. The ‘trailer’ of this was like at the end of Part 1, but this feels like the real deal. Powerful, inspiring speech. The imagery of the fallen behind him, goosebumps. On the other side, the struggle is real. I dont want to forget that these guys are still so young. But yet, true fighters who have experienced probably more than any of their age. Theres still a part of me who wants to hold on to a sliver of hope, but the other part.. if it is gonna be what it is 😔 I will keep this short because this is one to experience, let it sink in, and reflect 💜🙏🏻

Lynn #7

Pleaseeee react to the speech in dub, even if you already watched it show it in the next set of reactions

How2Pot

In the next episode you will see a very good reason why Season 3 was split into 2 parts. Among other things, this allowed the quality of the animation to be preserved. I can't watch episode 17 often enough, it really is one of the best episodes of AoT.

Maka

But do you consider Erwin admitting he would lie and con and use his charisma to manipulate new, young recruits? Is a liar and con man worthy of such devotion and self-sacrifice? Should people die under false pretenses? Just curious about your thoughts. I’m the biggest Erwin stan (I love his brilliantly written flaws), but I don’t think it’s too much to ask leaders, especially those with people’s lives in their hands, to operate with integrity (and his frank admission, in the end, that death was assured for each of them is appreciated). I put him on a pedestal because of his flaws and imperfections. I love a character who is perfectly imperfect.

There's a bunch of gym edits with the dub version because its exactly what you need to hear to complete those last 2 reps 😂

Jay

I have read real stories of war and there a many examples where people’s fear and self-preservation override duty or commands. Survival and self-preservation are powerful instincts. I would never criticize someone for succumbing to the desire to live. If I met a veteran who made choices that enabled them to return to their family, I cannot even imagine applying any descriptor close to cowardice to their actions. Never having served myself, I do know the chain of command, duty, and military culture are essential to create a unified strategy. I understand when people deviate it can put others at risk. Yet, I have great empathy for those faced with wartime decisions. When I think back over dangerous situations I have encountered in real life, I have tended to evade or flee rather than respond assertively, aggressively, or attack. That nature probably plays a part in why I never considered military service. My father was also drafted to Vietnam and had a tough, negative experience serving. He’s definitely more a pacifist since his tour which influenced our dinner table conversations.

I just went and rewatched the speech in dub after this. Chills still, even after having seen it so many times it is memorized

I agree, too, that the scene where Levi and Erwin do not flinch is so beautiful; the blast’s force blowing their hair and capes, their eye contact, the looming decision before them. Yes, chills. I disagree with the characterization of Erwin as a father figure to Levi. Isayama’s own words state he purposely wrote their relationship as “mutual and equal.”

antionette7

This is one of my fave episodes and my Altima favorite Erwin moment. I love the English dub version of his speech. It gives me chills every time! I’d follow Erwin to frozen abyss of Dante’s 9th layer of hell with this speech! I know y’all watch it in the English afterwards. My question for you, what was your favorite version/voice actor for this unreal moment?

Tortellini

My bros! First comment. I've been with you since you started YouTube, but only just joined the anime Patreon the other day. I've been binge watching your reactions for the past 4 days like a damn bum in my pyjamas with snacks. Honestly, I look like a mindless titan right now. It's been a treat to watch you both react to one of my favourite AND, I think, arguably greatest anime of all time. This chapter in the manga and this episode struck me so much when I first experienced them. Erwin Smith is probably my favourite character in AoT and one of my favourite characters across not just anime but fictional media across the board. I cannot wait for you to continue on this journey. I'll be gleefully there with you to witness your shock, heartache, joy, horror and every emotional possible along the way. Peace

Romba_7

i know others have said it but i would love to watch you guys react to erwins speech in dub. something about the delivery and the way it was worded was just was more emotional and satisfying. similar to mikasas speech on season 1 ep 7 when she learns eren dies. the only times in the show where i think the english vas and writing was better. but yeah chills man. levi making the decision for erwin to die and give up on his dream. poetic

Concepts94

damn you watched ahead huh? lol

Concepts94

they need to watch the outro its on of the best osts in the show

Concepts94

dub speech clears like its kinda not close

Concepts94

I just gotta say this straight up, but Erwin's speech will never NOT been one of the greatest pieces of media I've ever seen in my entire life

Jay

if erwin commanded me this i would def do it. instead of doing nothing i prefer to ACTUALLY do something if imma die either way😞 yes ill prob be like floch at first (i mean who wouldn’t) then die for humanity 😩

carmen 🫧

Yes brothers, it is starting... but this is the begginning hhahahah

Costosou

erwin’s speech never fails to give me chills, and his talk with levi makes me want to cry. about your 3 questions : 1. i think i would definitely be scared as hell as Floch is. but if i had a leader like Erwin, and heard that speech, i would definitely follow him ! 2. when i watched this episode, i thought “oh, shit is really getting REAL 🥲” goosebumps every time. 3. and about if you’re gonna be okay… i don’t think so 🤭 but you’ll enjoy it nonetheless. oh and here we go…we’re finally getting to my fave AOT episodes. i’m beyond excited for y’all to witness ART 🤌

Lina

How do we explain to Jared and Jordan that this is still the precuel and AoT hasnt started yet. I know you are rewatching in dub so I want to hear your comments on Erwins speech in dub, for me the tone is even more inspiring than the original, but it still feels lacking without him saying tatakae

Arturo Liera Bravo

Erwin's speech & charge scene is one of the best scenes I've ever seen in anime & TV. It's so perfect. It references what we saw in "No Regrets" where Erwin tells Levi: "A regretful memory will dull your next decision, then you'll probably leave it up to someone else to try. All that's left for you then is to die" For the first time, we see the mighty Erwin falter and second guess himself, and honestly why wouldn't he? The basement and knowing the truth of the world is within his reach, he's nearly achieved his lifelong goal, and after dedicating his life to find the truth, there's no wonder why he's become so desperate. But Levi sees this and remembers what Erwin told him all those years ago (In no Regrets) so he tells Erwin to "Give up on your dreams and die". Not because he wanted Erwin to die, but because he knows without Erwin fully committing to the charge, he will never be able to convince the recruits to die by his side because he'll be too caught up in reaching the basement. So he uses Erwin's own wisdom to convince him, which is why you see him smile at the end. This is right up there alongside the colossal/armoured titan reveals because it's a flawless scene with its music, voice acting, visuals, everything. What a flawless episode, and what a phenomenal show this is.

MY SOLDIERS, RAGE! MY SOLDIERS, SCREAM! MY SOLDIERS, FIGHTTTT!!! ahh this always gets me and now i’m crying again 🥺

Eren getting drop kicked for a field goal set the tone for this episode and it wasn’t good. Levi and Erwin, unflinching amidst a shower of boulders, chills. Levi facing the man he once vowed to kill and then follow, succumbing without question, heartbreaking. Erwin became the father figure Kenny never was, ugh! The suicide charge, sickening. Erwin 🙏🫡 The question: I believe that those who bravely serve commit to God and country with the knowledge that they may have to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. I think most would charge forward since they were facing certain death either way in the hopes of leaving a better future for their loved ones left behind. They made the ultimate choice when left with no choice. I would.

Cheryl Lambert

For once I genuinely agree they should record themselves watching the charge scene in English because it's on par with the sub

i'm never not crying during Erwins speech. of course this man would sacrifice himself. i really love the english VA for Erwin too, yall are in for a treat on your rewatch. i'd follow Erwin anywhere, if he says that we gotta go then we gotta go i'm evil but Eren getting yeeted across the city makes me laugh every time lol like what did you think would happen my man?

fox

In 3 hours I'll be able to watch this, something to look forward too 😀 Crazy to think you're almost done with the pregame

Tom Bombadil

Oh! J&J, it’s now safe to watch the intro! I think we’d all appreciate it if you guys watched both the intro and the outro for the next episode, 3x17. I think both actually add to the atmosphere of the beginning and end of that episode a lot. Please 🙏

Kevin

There's so much I want to say about Levi and Erwin's conversation, specifically how it refers to both their prior conversation before they left for the expedition and after this mission but I'll wait until we get there. I do think Levi shouldering the decision for Erwin is probably one of the hardest things he's had to do, but also the most compassionate thing he can do. He gets a rep of being cold and contempt but we see time and time again, he's such a deeper character than we see on the surface and in *my* opinion, is truly one of the most realistic chatacters in this world.

Les

To answer your question, I think that Flochs' speech @ 13:38 shows a very relatable thought process as well. Thinking you are different and can be a hero, but when faced with overwhelming fear of standing on deaths door... Who can say if I'd have the strength to let go of my future and face that fear of death head on, or would I be crushed by the weight of that very same fear? I'd align with Jordans' answer. I don't think I can say with 100% certainty that I could follow those orders, but I'd like to think that my motives correctly aligned and a strong desire to make positive contribution to the greater purpose. I'd lay down my life in pursuit of those. I can say without a doubt I would give all that I had in me to fight the fear and be brave. Its amazing, to think of the bravery of all men and women who have lived and died with such valor. I think this show has done an outstanding job of putting you in the shoes of real heroes who in fact did overcome that fear and followed their commander.

BSPITTA

Watching this episode, I can say WITHOUT A DOUBT, that Erwin is officially one of my AOT biases. IDC IDC. WHAT A LEADER! WHAT A MAN! I just can't get over how awesome he is! So brave because not many can do what he did and not many can be as honest as he was. He was honest about who he was and chose not to be that anymore for the sake of his desires. I SAID WHAT I SAID HE IS ONE OF THE GOATS! I JUST FIND THIS EPISODE AND THE ONES COMING UP TO BE A HONOR AND A GIFT TO US ALL!

Peach

Please I beg of you to watch the next 3 episodes together ! It’s gonna hit harder and better !

Xitlaly

Jared asked a wonderful question, in real life would we charge like this and run towards our death? or would we run away, and try to escape what seems to be a guaranteed death situation??? My question to you Jared, lets say that you run away and survive after that speech you just heard, knowing that all your comrades with your leader, courageously charged the beast titan to their death, would u be able to live with yourself after that? So many people have died under Erwin's leadership and commands for a reason btw, people give their lives, hearts and soul for such a leader. It feels like a curse and strenght at the same time, being that inspiring, charismatic, cold, not affraid of death whatsoever. Most people who watch the anime leaves those episodes with the sentiment that they themselves would die for him as well, it is a common thing in the community. When I thought him losing his arm and still yelling advance was cold, this speech right here made him my favorite anime character of all time.

Randy Flash

There is nothing more valuable to a soldier than to die with honor if it comes to it. At that point a soldier is just waiting for guidance and hope. A commander should always hide their emotions because they are contagious, and always look into the bright side of a positive outcome that will benefit their country even if it doesn’t benefit yourself! 👏🏽👏🏽🫡 Erwin

Papisuky

If it was me in that situation I’d initially feel exactly as Floch, the soldier questioning Erwin’s commands, and have a bunch of doubts. But after that speech by Erwin, I’d be so inspired that I’d run through a brick wall.

De La Sco 89

Even though I am a sub enjoyer, there is quite literally hundreds of hardstyle songs and remixes that use the English Erwin voice actors speech in them, and they all go so hard. I have the entire speech memorized just from those songs being in my gym rotation playlist for years!

Kevin

Honestly same. I’d 100% be riding as far to the back and side as possible, and once most are dead I’d start veering way off. My one redeeming quality would be I’d probably scale the wall to see if I could help the Scouts inside in a less dangerous way lmao

Kevin

erwin's speech is one of the rare instances where the dub goes WAY HARDER than the sub erwin's english VA put his whole command-ussy into this speech and it makes me ugly sob every single time.

hin0kamikagura

Erwin would lead me to death and I would even thank him for that haha. But honestly, Erwin has such a charisma that he's the only character in fiction that was able to make me feel patriotism for a non existent country. Erwin's design is very human, that's for sure haha. That's why he's my favorite character ever.

BILLIE (Hairy Harry)

GUYS WERE GOING TO MAKE IT TO ' THAT ' EPISODE, IM SO EXCITED !!! GET READY IT WILL ONLY GET BETTER

selma bougzir

erwin speech so powerful if he told me to die for humanity i would no hesitation

bort

Also in this situation if i was a soldier i would probably just run as far to the side as i could and maybe scale the wall because hear me out! if everyone else is charging out in a group the beast isnt going to notice little old me scurrying off into the sunset! after that idk though but thats what i would do there

Andrew

Erwin's speech where he says the dead entrust the living to give their lives and sacrifices meaning, gets ne every single time. I've seen it countless times and it still makes me tear up. It hits at the core just like Jared said. Especially when Erwin gets to the final bit, "my soldiers rage." Endless chills; complete surge in emotion upon hearing that delivery from Erwin's VA.

silly goose

No matter how many times I watch this ep I always get chills down my spine during Erwin’s speech. #socold 🥶

De La Sco 89

i made popcorn for this! i also bought enough for the next few reactions too! these episodes only get better from here!

Andrew

(just sth to illustrate from the real world) regretfully, this is how real war is (obviously not like fictional titans exist). soldiers fight every day in conflict just like this. its kinda an example of warfare. the trenches of WWI kinda comes to my mind, leaders who pushed soldiers over the side to run into machine gun fire or waiting in the trench for a mortar shell to explode next to you, destroying everything in its path

bort

Those eyebrows got their own fandom 👏🫡 Respect the eyebrows lol

Kenken

Erwin proved even his negative thoughts about himself to be wrong at the very end. He thinks of himself as a con-man just because he has his own selfish dream, but his actions throughout all of AoT show the exact opposite. When he gave the speech at the regiment choosing ceremony for our squad, he told them 30% would die on the first mission, and most would be dead in 4 years. Erwin has always told the cold, brutal truth. In this last scene, when he said he’d have to be a con-man, I believe his initial thoughts were perhaps telling them it wasn’t a suicide charge. That they would live through the rush on the Beast Titan. But as Erwin has always done, by the time he’s up in front of them, he ends up being 100% truthful. “Are you telling us… we’re heading to our deaths?” “Yes.” In the end he didn’t con them into charging. He told them the truth, that they would die, and they all still made their own choice, knowing the consequence, to rush the Beast Titan with him. To me this is Erwin’s greatest strength. In such a twisted, cruel world, he tells people the truth, and let’s them make their own decision to become heroes.

Kevin

Soooo well said 👏❤️

Kenken

'till this day scientists have yet to understand how commander Erwin's horse was able to support his massive iron balls

gungaloo

used to cry like a baby this episode in the past but now i just have ptsd

bort

In the speech where Erwin makes the decision to give up his own life, give up on his dreams, and lead the recruits to death for a small chance at dealing a blow against the titans, he doesn't say what we would expect him to say: "dedicate your hearts." Instead, he drops all of that. Because . . . what are they even fighting for? One soldier to survive. As Erwin said, it's all meaningless. But, what does that say about all the others who gave their lives? We don't see their sacrifices as meaningless. And that is the *sole* truth, Erwin says, trusting the living to find purpose in their failed struggle. Erwin said it would take a con-man and a series of expert lies, but I don't think he lied once. In No Regrets, Erwin told Levi that once you begin to regret your actions you won't believe in the correctness of your own decisions. Then, you'll let others make your decisions for you. When Erwin realized that he would have to lead the recruits to their deaths, he began to regret his life. "Can you see them? Our comrades are asking what became of the hearts they gave." Erwin can't make the decision because he doesn't believe in himself or the goodness of his actions anymore. That's why Levi says "I'm making the choice. Give up on your dream and die." To the audience, that seems so harsh and cold. But Erwin smiles and thanks him, because Levi took the burden of making that decision off his shoulders. In the end, though, Erwin never was able to resolve the guilt he felt for his father's death. Levi has always been a character that expresses *real* compassion. No Regrets ends with Levi saying: "I'll follow you, Erwin Smith", and Levi intends to fulfill that promise, even without Erwin to give him orders. The scene of Levi kneeling before Erwin is . . . I don't know what to say.

Matthew Pershing

Erwin's speech still brings chills to my body

Gatha Naranath

LIKE I SAID BEFORE!!! I WOULD FOLLOW THAT MAN TO HELL IF HE ORDERED ME TO! 😭💔😭💔😭 That speech still gets me every time. 😭😭😭😭

Kenken

The scene where Jared mentioned it looked like Erwins head got blown off was indeed correct but not about Erwin. It was some other soldier who got domed. We can tell because that horse was brown, and Erwins horse is white. I don't know what the symbolism is, but Erwin being the only one with a unique horse that we have seen is fitting to me. He certainly deserves it.

Jackson Seales

Erwin gives so much captain america vibes, I'd follow him to my death too lol

Muh-la-lay

Erwin's relationship with Levi comes full circle in this episode. In No Regrets Erwin tells Levi that once regret start seeping in your decision making dulls and you begin deferring to others, after that all that's left for you is death. In this episode, Erwin is honest with Levi about his goals and laments the bodies he's piled up. He regrets his unfinished business in life (reaching the basement) and Levi steps in to take the next decision off Erwin's hands... telling him to go on the suicide charge. Very poignant storytelling and character exploration for the both of them.

Sofomo

Erwin’s speech never fails to get me choked up. I’d follow him and his magnificent eyebrows anywhere 🫡
