I'm not a fan of one upping other people's favourite character and calling them out, rather I prefer to look at a characters overall writing and how their purpose fits into the narrative to determine whether or not they're a good character. Shasha is obviously a comedic relief character, but a lot of the time she is treated seriously. And it's not fair to compare her to a tertiary character like Keith who has a specific purpose like in this episode. They each serve a unique purpose and are good in their own way so it's not fair to call her out for having weak writing.

Jay

the way Shadis said that the story he is going to tell is utterly useless to humanity but the same story ended up giving huge life lessons and a dialogue which will impact the MC's life greatly in future

its_aliza

I also feel the same way as Carla.. even now I'm crying. I am a mother as well and it hurts me everytime I hear her words because I deeply wish my mother had said those words (or something similar) to me..

its_aliza

hahaha best boy XD

its_aliza

This episode is one of my favorites in the series. The message it delivers is very beautiful.. Carla's words make me cry everytime. I wish she were my mom honestly XD And when Keith saw Grisha and said "it was all your fault" I believe he meant that it was Grisha's fault for putting the idea in Keith's head that he is some special man or the "chosen one" when he wasn't any of that. So Keith spent many years believing those words of Grisha and thought that he could bring great change into the world if he was placed in a certain place or position.. In the end, he was proven wrong and that broke him.

its_aliza

Was finishing up cooking dinner when you uploaded, excited to watch while we eat. Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and white pepper gravy, and green beans. Love the reactions, and adore the discussions.

Angela

Currently on my break time at work. I am having a hot cafe mocha with whipped cream, a side of Lemon Poppyseed muffin, and a dose of J&J reactions to top it off. Perfect!

Aya

Floch the goat

Sean Carroll

She wasn’t trying to shut him up. He was right and she was also right. She was trying to get Keith to visualise a different perspective which he did but still struggled greatly with the rest of his life

Sean Carroll

In one episode Keith already became a better character than Sasha could ever hope to be. Come at me Sasha lovers I don’t care

Sean Carroll

Hopefully I'm not a first time watcher but man.. I agree 😔

Maevizion ~ Maëva

Who is Floch ?

I had Panda Express yesterday while watching you. Was eating while rice with noodles on top with shrimps and teriyaki chicken 👌 It was delicious, and your reaction was great 🫡

The meaning of life and everything we do is bc of our emotions (emotion = energy in motion) We seek out true happiness and avoid pain. emotions get us mooving. We create all our lifes through emotions, thinking and feeling, the hard part is to except all of our emotions even the "bad" ones like the world told us (sadness, anger) but there is no bad emotion every emotion wants to protect us for excample like fear. Except and allow yourself to feel every emotion 100% so we can let them go and life a truely happie life and experience inner peace! Sorry for this long text but idk I felt like it lol. Mutch love to everyone reading this, I cant wait for the next episodes. greetings from Germany :)

RaffixD 96

The episodes usually drop around my dinnertime, but I've taken to waiting until breakfast the following day to watch so I can also read the comments as well. I really enjoy and appreciate the discussions here. Therefore, I'm eating a sausage biscuit with country gravy, accompanied by some hazelnut coffee, lol.

Keisha L

This episode has a beautiful message that a person doesn’t have to be “special” to make a difference. Carla says Eren is special just for being born, and Eren repeats that message throughout the series. And yes, it is implied that Shadis is in love with Carla. He broke Eren’s equipment to protect him, he didn’t want Carla’s child to die fighting titans

Jordan Cobb

One of my favorite episodes bro I rarely cry but tears almost fell down my eyes too. This whole arc we been hearing talks about being special with eren and historia. I love it cuz everybody once thought they special one day just to realize most of us ain’t. “Is it wrong not to be special” hit different

Ibrahim

People soft spoiling in the comments smh

Ibrahim

Oh lol, didn’t even notice. 🤷‍♂️

Kevin

😂 to be fair, I pause alot to take notes on rewatch, the first watch I let it play and watch with J&J 🙏🏻 That Marlo and Eren scene literally made me 🤦‍♀️ haha

Lynn #7

"He's already special because he was born into this world".... that hits me in the feels every time :(

Dwob

Still watching the reaction but I literally saw the back of Floch's head behind Jean and instinctively rolled my eyes...

Dwob

It's insane to me how AOT's SIDE characters have better characters and personalities than 95% of what modern Western media spits out (I'm looking at you Marvel).

Jay

what carla said man. i cant. that entire conversation is just beautiful. she shut keith right up

Concepts94

i forgot he was born into this world too 😂

Concepts94

The episodes usually drop at 2 am where I am, so I watch them after work in the evening while having dinner. I'm currently sick as a dog though, so I watched this one in the morning while having breakfast in bed (oats, half an orange and coffee). I LOVE the longer videos where you read comments, it's fun! 😁 And don't worry, I shed tears during Carla's speech to Shadis, too. What she was saying was already poignant enough, but watching baby Eren just doing baby antics all over her while she was talking just clove my heart in two. AOT is a masterpiece any way you look at it.

Ushna Seeam

Also, at this point in the story, they've been using ODM gear for about 3 years, and that requires great core strength, which explains why Eren & co. are so ripped despite only being teenagers.

Ushna Seeam

i just noticed too 😭🙏

bort

so glad you brought this up. As a rewatch, you can definitely tell how Eren is maturing, and even how he is slowly starting to separate himself from the others. It is also interesting how before, we experienced the show through Eren. wtv he was confused with, we were too. Whenever he was upset, happy, or passionate, so were we. But now, he seems to be separate from us because we hear less of what he's thinking. He's more in his own world after activating a bit of the founder titan. I first noticed it when he started recalling what Ymir said in the trees. He remembered, but the audience didn't know until Hange revealed it. We're starting to slowly shift from Eren's perspective and personally, it allows me to be more critical of the characters, cuz before when all the characters were just as confused as us, we could just insert ourselves in their position, but now the characters are developing in there own ways. It makes sense with their age too, we all get more cagey with our feelings at 15 lol.

Muh-la-lay

Okay okay... but Annie never *redacted* someone I *redacted* like I said above ^^ I understand, my heart just can't forgive

Lauren Crawford

lol fr she even caught the Marlo and Eren stuff that they both can’t take a hint 🔥

IQLou

The videos release when I'm asleep so they're how I start my mornings. I wake up before my partner and stream them to the TV, because I lose control of the TV when she wakes up 😅

Mike Rees

When the episode gets closer it’s so EASY to deduce what will happen after watching that scene.

IQLou

But somehow i bet some of yall love Annie cmon now

IQLou

KING FLOCH HAS ARRIVED

Sean Carroll

People that have poor opinion of shadis from this episode don’t look deeper into the meaning behind his actions. That’s why it’s one of the best episodes in the series, because even a character like Keith has a complicated past

Sean Carroll

Great comment. Why do you spell his name that way 😆

IQLou

Id sub to your reaction patreon

It’s 12:30 am and I’m hungry, I waited till this moment to sit down, eat my cereal and watch you guys😎

I think you guys missed Shadis was also in one of the OVAs you watched as well. Erwin wasn’t commander yet as Shadis was still in charge

Great reactions!! Thank you!! The line of Carla, from "Is it wrong to be not special?" to "He is already special, because he is born into this world" is the best line in AOT for me. Same as you, I teared up when I watched it for the first time. And I think I know how Carla feels because I'm a mother myself. But Isayama, he was a young man when he wrote this, I can't believe his high resolution in people he is not. I thought, this is what makes him so genius and gives us a lot of sympathy for AOT. BTW, I also eat when watching your reaction, and I commented before that I get your upload announce early in the morning, so I wait to watch until I have time! It is sometimes my breakfast accompaniment, my lunch accompaniment or my dinner accompaniment. lol I'm Japanese, so I'm eating Japanese food most of the time. haha Anyway, thank you so much for your great reaction again! I couldn't wait for this one, but now got it and made me so happy! Now on, I can't wait for season 3 part 2!!!! Let's gooooooo!! Have fun and take care XD

hiro ame

First time watcher. I’m usually having a snack when I sit down and watch the reactions. It’s like one of the last things I watch before I settle down and scroll on my phone before sleeping. The videos usually come out when I’m at work or a little after I get off but I always fall asleep after work so I’m always watching at night. Today I had ice cream while watching. Anyways, I loved this episode. It was just good too see Carla and to see how she and Grisha met. Though we didn’t see her much before she died, I really loved seeing this bit of back story even from Keith’s perspective. I wish she could see Eren now. I think she’d be against him as a scout at first but she’d eventually be proud of who he’s become. But Eren would be completely different if he hadn’t gone through the trauma of witnessing him mom dying and everything else he’s been through, They all deserved so much better than the world they were born into. Fighting for any semblance of a normal life in the midst of being vulnerable to the titans every second of every day. It’s sad. We learned a few things in this episode actually. Or at least things were clarified for me that I hadn’t known or put together. I thought that Grisha had only become a titan a little before he turned Eren but whole time he was one before he even met Carla. I also kinda felt bad for Keith. Him doubting himself as commander, losing his comrades, and experiencing heartbreak. He needed to work through those insecurities and self doubts because he let that reallyy get to him. And Eren, I always feel so proud of him and how he’s grown. This episode made me feel so proud of him as well. Just seeing his parents and then knowing who he’s become. You can tell he’s a lot more confident in himself now since the episode when he realized he’s humanities ace. He’s happier with himself it seems. Idk why this line is sticking with me but when he said “I was never special or anything. I’m just the son of a special man.” Oh that line tugged at my heartstrings. This was a good episode. I really enjoyed everything about it. Can’t wait for the next one!

Kia

ThIs is such a beautifully written episode. A few things to connect: #1 In the very FIRST episode of Attack On Titan, the first appearance of the Scout Regiment on screen was with Keth Shadis commanding the soldiers, and later in the same episode, that heartbreaking scene with Keith handing a mother the arm of her son. #2 Notice Sasha hiding behind Jean when they went to see Keith lmao, she was terrified of him since he made her run for hours and skip dinner after the whole potato incident ("What's wrong Braus? Why aren't you sitting?" XD) #3 Another thing from the first episode, when Hannes is running to fight the smiling titan to save Carla (before he froze and took Eren and Mikasa away) he said something like "Now is my opportunity to repay my debt!", meaning that, Grisha had saved Hannes' wife from the plague as we saw in this episode, and saving Grisha's family, in Hannes mind, would repay that debt to Dr Jäger. You keep talking about Isayama being an absolute madman, and you're absolutely right. This is a masterpiece.

Elle Firespray

I know lots of people seem to have negative opinions on Shadis after this episode but Shadis' feelings are more complex than that in my opinion. It's the fact that everyone feels the need to feel "special" and feel the need to alter the way of the world. Keith obviously felt this pressure and wanted to make some kind of world altering change and I think this reflects pretty well in our lives as well. Lots of people may be smarter than us, have a talent or skill that makes them unique or just be naturally be gifted, we often end up comparing ourselves to them. But fail to realise there isn't anything wrong with being us and who we are. In the end, I never took Keith sabotaging the training equipment as jealousy, rather it was him trying to save the one thing Carla had in her life that was special to her from the same burden he endured. But like Shadis said, Eren was destined to set his life ablaze from the start. His path in life was inevitable.

Jay

*first time watcher* Okay we have yet another puzzle piece put to the flashbacks and qns from prev eps. My thoughts: 1. First of all, I should have said this earlier, but credit to the animation team and VAs on how they had subtly yet gradually shown the growing/ ‘aging’ of the characters with each episode. Their features, look, hair and voice mature as time passes. So easy to overlook these so I wanted to at least show my appreciation to that. 2. Post-Orvud and crowning ceremony, starts off pretty chill but some progress shown. Tbh, thats some guillotine-style bada** device 😅. Marlo joins the scouts but theres some tension between the scouts and new recruits. 3. SADIES- I never thought that Sadies was THAT scout commander crying to the lady in the first ep 😱. Wow. In my notes, my wild guess was ‘brown short-haired, Erwin’s superior’ lol. That was coincidental as I was rewatching Levi’s OVA not long ago. Never got his name, so never thought of Sadies. Thinking back now, Sadies mentioned Grisha’s name when assessing the cadets then. And another wow, he had tampered with Eren’s ODM 😱! His story- its probably intentional that he painted himself in a rather negative light, but I think it takes courage for one to be able to speak about it, more so to a group he trained and led before. 4. Grisha on the other hand, okay this is interesting. Already got me thinking from the first time they met, outside the Wall. Nice to see young ‘drunk’ Hannes 😂 and Carla (even Miche and Nanabe) by the way 🫶. As for amnesiac Grisha, he remembered only his name and profession and had Sadies teach him about this world and the Scouts. And yet, some years later, he knew about the Reiss family, their titan power, sacrificed himself and passed it to Eren, along with a key to their basement. One part of me thinks this seemed similar to Ymir, when she was wandering mindlessly before she turned back into a human, but another part of me thinks he might not be telling the real truth about his identity from the beginning. We really need to get to that basement! 😵‍💫 I giggled seeing Mikasa’s ‘reaction’ in the beginning, the guys teasing Marlo (and Eren 🤦‍♀️) and poor Sasha freaking out in front of Sadies. Overall a very interesting ep 💜🙏🏻

Lynn #7

It's kind of interesting to see Eren's change in behavior starting this episode. He is so much calmer but also seems to be quite sad most of the time. He also thinks about things more deeply and takes everything very seriously, such as when Jean was teasing him in the beginning but Eren didn't even give a reaction. Also, peep Mikasa being jealous with Eren hanging around Historia haha, I love her so much. P.s. I'm usually done with dinner by the time you guys post so I'm always in the middle of studying when the video comes out. So I use the reaction as a little reward for myself at the end of my study session. It honestly gives me motivation to get my work done earlier! I'm in nursing school so the grind never ends, but your videos make it easier.

Winifred

I've rewatched this episode over 10 times including reactors and I only just realised Sasha is hiding behind Jean when Eren talks to Keith which is funny af 😭

Jay

@sean, youre right they probably will but tbh what could they deduce from that? not much it doesnt really reveal much plus its a dope watch

gdnsx

such a great episode. the speech given from carla about little eren made me tear up a bit

bort

Hey guys! this is my first comment and I just wanna say, I've been watching you guys since you started your BTS journey and I'm really happy that you started reacting to anime as well. You guys are making me notice so many things in AOT that I haven't noticed before, so rewatching it with you makes it feel like it's my first time watching and it's the best thing ever. So thank you so much! You make my day so much better. I'm enjoying your Haikyuu and Deathnote reactions as well! (I'm basically watching them for the first time with you). And just one thing to add, although idk if it's that important to the plot, but you guys seemed confused about it. In ep 10, you can tell the fight between Reiner and the beast titan happened because of some hints we get. Like Reiner's titan passed out, facing down on the ground, and Bertholdt helping him get out when ejecting. Then right after that, the beast titan declares that he won, and says, "saving Annie can come later" because finding the coordinate is the priority. You can also see Bertholdt glaring at the beast titan right after because, I assume, he's mad about what's happening (since the beast titan won't allow them to rescue Annie). That's what I got from this scene!

Duaa

Tell your son thank you. And I think they captured it well in the show. The subtle change in the characters through their experiences. My dad could deploy and come back looking like a totally different person. It's crazy how much it changes you.

Lauren Crawford

Boy I used to watch these while I smoked but I quit smoking now I make a coffee. I really just want to sit down and enjoy these

Lauren Crawford

if they watch the ova after 12 which people have suggested, then i think they will be on s3ep17 on my bday 😄

fox

They obviously couldn’t possibly know where eren lives unless they wanted to search every house in shiganshina

Sean Carroll

What episode number on your birthday?

Sean Carroll

thx ! should be better now

Muh-la-lay

To be honest I feel like I got limited space in my Brain no matter how much I love a show just give me a few months and I will forget most of the story 😂 It might be a blessing in disguise

Kenken

Great comment! You may want to phrase the part about Annie more vaguely though. The “Maybe because Annie is…” sentence could be interpreted as a spoiler, as I don’t believe they’re fully theorizing that yet

Kevin

Same 😂😂 like I understood but the resentment never went away

Kenken

The first three seasons are just the prologue, season four is where the real story begins! Can’t wait!

Clay Thomas

would be fine with me

Santi

One thing that’s often overlooked in this episode is that Keith’s sabotage of Erin’s belt was done out of kindness. He had already shown concern that Erin may not be a “special person”, and he also witnessed Grisha telling Erin, a literal child, that he has to avenge his mother. Keith hates the path his life took after Grisha called him a “chosen one”. He’s afraid Grisha’s words are what’s pressuring Erin to become a soldier, and that if he does he’ll end up a failure like himself. However, after seeing Erin’s incredible perseverance, he realizes Erin may be special after all, and tells Thomas to give him his working belt. If he truly broke the belt just out of spite, he would have continued the farce and just failed Erin at that point. P.s. I always go for a 5k step walk and then have a Halo Top ice cream on Monday’s while I watch your video, so I was holding a big ol’ spoon of ice cream when you put my food comment up haha.

Kevin

Defo an underrated episode. When u guys upload for me it’s around midnight so usually I’m in bed or having a smoke, but I really enjoy watching these before I go to sleep :) ur commentary is v relaxing

ellen avenger

Gosh, I could talk forever about this episode. there is so much to unpack and so many parallels to other characters. First, I think what Shadis meant when he said it was all Grisha's fault wasn't that he knew Grisha was a titan, instead, he meant that because Grisha put the idea in his head of there being "special" people, it's Grisha's fault that he's miserable now that he found out he wasn't "special". I've watched AoT multiple times now, and I just now connected Shadis mindset to Annies. In S 1, Annie mentioned how she wanted the people who get caught in the flow (aka normal people, those who aren't "special") to be seen as humans. In contrast to Shadis, Annie accepts that she is not special and even goes out of her way to not partake in anything that would make her special (her monologue about pretending to be soldiers when she was sparring with Eren). Annie understands that being put in a special role, only leads to suffering. I think Shadis understood that as well and that's one of the reasons he messed with Erens belt. Yeah because he was insecure and wanted to test what Grisha said about his son being special, but it could have also been that he understood that if Eren were to pass and continue to be a soldier, he would only experience suffering. Maybe tinkering with Eren's belt was his way of doing Carla a favor and sparing her son from being "special". Also, the callback to Eren's core value of deserving freedom because he was born into the world, actual goosebumps. It doesn't get repeated much throughout the show so the fact that it's his mother who says that about him, and being told that his mother said that at a time when Eren is feeling his most useless and undeserving, makes it even more special. Anyway, loved yalls reaction and I can't wait for you guys to experience the second half of the season, peak fiction. (please don't watch the new opening and watch through the credits next episode !!)

Muh-la-lay

And dont forget that he's a titan shifter and since you watched the whole show you'll unederstand what im trying to say

selma bougzir

"I want in the basement" is something only said in AOT or Tornado Alley. On a serious note, when you were talking about how much they've aged, it may have only been a few months but they have been through so much since finishing training that it would definitely show on their faces. I have seen it first hand throughout my life when I've seen people go through their own traumas they can become unrecognizable in a short time. My son is a Marine and even though Boot was only 3 months I immediately saw a difference in his appearance and the way he carried himself. My grandma always said you can see the life someone has lived if you look closely enough. Aloha NuiLoa ohana 🤙 can't wait for more, LET'S Goooooo!!

Malia

Stop ima cry

Lauren Crawford

Boy I can even understand but I can't forgive 🤷‍♀️

Lauren Crawford

idk who ur talking about but i hope its the same person I'm thinking about lol

Muh-la-lay

i think it can be ingested and work with a scream, and if it's ingested it wont just turn you right away like an injection. i've only read the manga once and watched the anime once so i could be off.

fox

Right? And I can imagine there was some baby fat in there to be lost. This show does a very good job of making us forget they're literal children sometimes lol

Lauren Crawford

Yeah! And teens get massive growth spurts at that age

IQLou

Okay, my question got answered! Thanks))

Lisa Cho

I hope they don’t, they would pause and analyse forever

Sean Carroll

To be fair, war does change you, and drastically. And if you push your body to the extreme it doesn't take long for someone to bulk up a little bit. I might question things if he was running around here looking like Todo or something

Lauren Crawford

My name was pronounced correctly, yes. you can read it as if it’s “Maria” but with a K 😂.

KariaP

Technically, Eren's titan powers should work like steroids as it would heal his muscles from working out faster.

Blaahh

This is genuinely the most underrated episode of aot. It’s such a beautiful episode about a man who every body forgot. Don’t forget the name Keith shadis

Sean Carroll

Yeah this show be making you feel conflicting feelings about characters like we've seen yall question with Reiner and now Kenny. Idk how Isayama did it cause i be loving some people I swore I'd hate forever. Except *redacted* cause forever and always f* that bish

Lauren Crawford

wait a dam minute… ur right… if they know where the basement is why wouldn’t they jus sneak in there.. but here is my theory. uhh i don’t think they know where erens house is…idk never thought about it but they still need eren to capture him soo

carmen 🫧

watching aot with yall has become the best part of my days 😄 ive done some math on what episode you'll be watching on my birthday and i'm excited lol things are getting crazyyy since you've been posting aot in the evening time usually for me, i'm usually done with dinner and just chillin at my computer 😄 today i have chocolate cuz it's been a rough day lol

fox

When they said: "We have the same question," my brain automatically supplied "Where's Griesha?" Like a sleeper agent who just heard their activation phase.

Lauren Crawford

yes first time i watched i also forgot about some stuff that happened before 🤨 so ur not alone j&j 🫣

carmen 🫧

YEE. wait isnt there an ending credit scene that should be watched? in the next episode? do they know about it
