I'm glad you watched 15 and 16 together. I really feel they're a pair, and the impact is better when they're together. They give you a win in your first official game, but they're gonna make you feel really bad about it. It's really beautiful and sadistic.

Rhast

Now that i looked at it again i am pretty sure you're right. To me the action itself still looks like daichi touches the net but the line judge raises his flag in that scene which means that the ball is out of play. Thats why he is pointing at the antenna. It can't be a net touch because that is not something line judges look at or have authority over (only the first or second refeere do)

Bjarne

@ 7:26 Daichi touched the antenna with the ball. If the ball makes any kind of contact with the antenna it's an out. (Another fact if a ball is spiked on the outside of the net it's also an out)

NG

I thought it was maybe because they touched the antenna, I think I remember reading that touching the antenna is an out, and Daichi touches the antenna with that ball.

NG

I’ve heard this from somewhere else, but they basically said this episode is like a love letter to the athletes who lose in their final tournament. The portrayal of regret and devastation you feel following your final defeat was so well represented in this episode. It reminded me when my team and I lost my super senior year - which ended up being the last game of my softball career. I remember crying for days afterwards thinking to myself, “wow it’s really over? it can’t be…” only to later on accept the reality that it was time to hang up my cleats… forever. That’s why I would say this is one of my favorite episodes of the series. It’s real, honest, and resonates with all athletes. Because, one day we all have to say goodbye to our sport. Anyways, love your insights and reaction to this episode per usual. Keep up the good work fellas!

Irie

I’m curious!! Ooooh

Ntsuab Vwj

It definitely was a net touch yeah

Also it's recommended that y'all watch each match all the way through for the rest of the matches in the season. Both for hype quality and enjoyment. Haikyuu binge lets gooooo

I think this episode was the turning point for me, from thinking that Haikyu was typical sports shonen series to like "oh this sh*t is sooo real" 🤣 I also literally learned volleyball rules from Haikyuu, now I'm a real volleyball fan too haha I've watched Japanese high school matches and professional matches thanks to Haikyuu. I never thought I would watch sports, I mean, I sometimes watch basketball and soccer when it comes to international matches like Olympics and World Cup because everyone watching them, but I still don't know the detailed rules. Only volleyball that I watched thoroughly, I even subscribed to VBTV app to watch full international matches over and over 🤣

Here we go!! This is probably one of the most important episodes in the entire series, at least for me. It makes me teary every time. Before we go on to think only about the battles for the win, we have to acknowledge the effort of all players and the real experiences of struggling and losing. Most people only see and celebrate winners - but the fact that the author needed to acknowledge true athlete experiences and pay homage to the pain of loss too, as though to say, "I see you, even when no one thinks of the losers" is so important. Also here's a detail that is SO meaningful from our humble man Suga: Age hierarchy can be strict in Asian cultures - the kouhai (the junior) on a team must be more respectful to their senpai (the senior) so you will see them bow to their senpai often. It's hard to see but at 22:50 Suga actually BOWS to Hinata and Kageyama when asking them to pave the way for Asahi. It's more significant for a senpai to bow to their kouhai and it's a detail that gets me in the heart because it shows just how much it means to Suga for him to ask them in that way for his friend. I can't wait to see more of your reactions now that we've reached the real matches! So excited for next week!

The battle tight at the net between Ikejiri and Daichi @7:20 is called a joust. A joust is a battle between an offensive player and a blocker when the ball is super tight to the net. Whoever pushes last (meaning whoever has more strength, hang time, and control directing the ball through or around the opposing player) usually wins the battle. Although Daichi pushed last, he pushed the ball into the red and white net antenna, which is out of bounds.

Selection Sunday on the 17th! Care to share who you have going all the way? Do you have a Cinderella you’d like to see progress through the bracket?🏀 Doesn’t the montage at the end of this episode give “One Shining Moment” vibes?

antionette7

i think this might count as a spoiler so you should probably consider deleting your comment.. everyone is waiting for them to get to that moment in the show as well because of those characters and we simply cant wait for it either, but it ruins the fun and surprise if you just reveal the info about it like this.. so i hope you edit out your comment and delete the spoiler parts.. thank you!

nikki

this ep is one of the main reasons of why haikyu is great

bebe

eh that's a spoiler. let them see it when the time comes dude

i love that you also feel the real-ness of this show, thats why i said before you will grow to like characters you may only see for a couple episodes, because it's easy to relate to and feel for the teams that come and go. in its realistic-ness you've gotta know that not every team has the same will to win as our crow boys, so they are bound to have some wins against the teams that maybe don't try as hard at practice and such ~ and the real battles are with the teams that want to fight just as hard as they do. as for voice actors, i am more knowledgeable about the english voice actors (sue me) but one thing i love about watching english dubs is recognizing a lot of the same voice actors (which i struggle more with in japanese simply because my brain isn't listening as much as it's reading subs), because they use studios that employ these actors to do many many shows every year. i'm sure it's the same in Japan which is why so many voice actors are a part of many shows. so i LOVE when i hear a voice and then spend various amounts of time trying to figure out who it is without looking it up lol sometimes it's instant and sometimes it takes me a minute. for Haikyuu, my favorite english VA voices my favorite character, who you will meet in season 2 🥰

At 14:40 I looooove Hinata's voice when he says "katta" (we won!)! It hitsdeep in the soul, gives so much emotions. His voice actor (Ayumu Murase) is amazing, one of the best.

Great episodes! The last episode really got me, as I did competition in sailing. My team and I lost many times too, even though we worked as hard as others. This is why this episode is one of my favourite as it shows such realism in sports. You may have worked till you past out or neglect practices, by the end of the day there will always be a winner and a loser. But, I also like to add that those who keep going, no matter the outcome, are the true winners. I stopped sailing when I entered college, but one of my teammates who was a bit older than me, kept training, until he entered the olympics in 2021. Now he is a regular member of my country’s Olympic sailing team. So proud of him!!! Also, I can’t wait for you guys to meet the other teams!!! You’ll soon find out, you won’t be able to know who to root for cause all the other teams are so good, especially when you get to know the back stories of some other opposing players. I searched it up a little, but the pronunciation of Date Tech is “Da-te-ko”. Their school is called the Date Tech High School (伊達工業高校, Datekōgyō Kōkō), or Dateko for short. Their chants is one of my most favourite: Go, Go, Let’s Go! Let’s Go, Dateko! It makes you want to cheer with them haha. I can’t wait for next week as it one of the best episodes in the whole series and this is one of the few.

The subtle things in this show move me every time... It was mentioned that Daichi and ikejiri are similar height, the same age and similar physically. So what sets them apart? Daichi has the will and intent to go all the way to the top of nationals, while ikejiris will wayned after seeing how much work it takes to actually reach the top. Daichi became a valuable defensive asset and captain, a core part of the team while ikejiri became just a decent player and he himself realized this. I'm sure you guys and everyone reading this has gone to the gym or something of that nature before and most gym go ers know that the people who go there and just go through the motions and the ones who GO HARD look completely different. No matter what you're doing. The harder you go, the more focused you are, the more you get out of exercise, work and life in general. Love it.

Oscar OBG

I get what you mean, I guess it's a "me" thing that I get hyped up when given just a smidge of information but with no context 🫠

Sara

Hey hey I love love love that team too! I totally agree with you, and I'm trying to be vague when I say this, but I think alluding to that ruins the surprise just a little bit! I'd rather Jordan and Jared be as blind as possible so it's even more hype when they get there. Hope you don't take this the wrong way, the wait IS hard especially for favourite characters like them 😔

Zaek

this anime inspired me to start playing volleyball 9 years ago and I'm still in love with the sport and still rewatch this show over and over again, thats how much of an impact it has on people

Elina

from your discussion in the end i can already tell you are gonna love this anime more and more. its probably the most accurate, realest one there is. there will be lots of character progress and obstacles and i cant wait for you to witness that

Elina

Sara

at 7:32 it was a net violation. when daichi pushed the ball over, he touched the net/antenna, thats why you can see it moving when one of the referees is waving the flag

Elina

I love this episode! It shows that even though this is a show, people lose even if they put their all into it. It’s so realistic and I’ve never seen a show depicting the losers from their perspective. Each person is the main character of their own stories. Can’t wait for you guys to see the next episodes!!!! Side note: My favorite character of the entire show has been officially introduced this episode! Iwaizumi (or Iwa-chan as Oikawa calls him lol) You’ll see in future episodes why I love him so much 💕

Joydan Bri’an

This is the essence of Haikyuu, the ability for the audience to connect to complete strangers through a shared experience. We've been there, we know someone who's been there, and all that puts you back in those moments. The best part for me about this episode is that when they're thinking about all the things they feel they could've done better, their preparation might have been perfect and they would still feel that regret. You always second guess yourself after the fact, even when in the moment you had really done the best you could.

Jake Thompson

7:31 i am pretty sure daichi touched the net there, you can kinda see it moving in the shot where the ref points at it. it is a point for the other team if you touch the net Edit: fellow patreon NG pointed out that what actually happened is that the ball hit the antenna. Daichi being the one to touch it last before that means that it is a point for the opponent

Bjarne

This is one of the most memorable episodes in the whole series, it shows the real life interactions and perspectives for the losers who are often forgotten too fast, even though they are also giving it they're all. Sometimes losing is even more defining in life than wining could ever be.

Angélica Hernández

Happy Wednesday! Love the reaction! So those two guys are not twins, there’s just so many extras that some of them end up looking very alike, but twins are often drawn in anime in very stereotypical ways. (Ex. Being identical twins, twin telepathy, saying the same things at the same time) if there were twins/siblings in this anime what roles do you thing they would excel in together? ( setter, middle blocker, ace, decoy?)

Nistley

I really love Tsuki and Noya. Why is my type so different??? They have completely different personalities and bodies but every time when i see them I’m feeling things.
