Haikyuu!! 1x9 REACTION!

Comments

Small detail even most of us re-watchers miss: That moment of brutal honesty by Suga was mostly meant as an acknowledgement and apology to Asahi. Suga is facing Asahi when he’s speaking his truth. Although Kageyama posed the question of why Suga seemed to be stepping down, Suga’s answer was a heartfelt plea to Asahi. Try rewatching that scene with this in mind. It makes the moment even deeper. Suga ultimately turns to kageyama to address his question directly. Having found the strength after sharing his burden, Suga politely but sincerely states “I won’t let you outplay me.”

Hi guys, I'm new on Patreon and just watched all haikyuu episodes in one go haha! I enjoy your reactions very much, please keep up the good work :) I'm not sure if someone already mentioned this in the comments, but, after watching all reactions in one swoop, there are a few things I'd like to clarify. Haikyuu is based in Japan, and Asia takes respect / formal speech and titles more seriously than in the west. When addressing people by their name, they often are addressed with their last name. If you're on first-name basis, it's an indicator that you're close to this person or have known them for a long time (That's why you might get confused with names. It's also common in japan that, when calling out someone by their full name, the last name is mentioned first. E.g. Azumane Asahi. Azumane is his last name and Asahi is his first) In many asian countries, there is also honorific speech, and in the japanese languge, you have both honorific prefixes and suffixes. The most commonly used in this anime are: -san: can be used for both informal and formal language, gender neutral -kun: semi-formal title for a man—primarily men younger or the same age as the speaker -chan: Most frequently used for girls and small children, close friends, or lovers. It makes the person "cute", therefore it's not commonly used for boys. Oikawa from Aoba Josei (Kageyamas senpai who has a lot of female fans) often addresses people with chan -senpai: "senior", someone who is either older than you or has a higher rank / position as you -Kohai: "Junior", someone who is younger than you or has a lower rank / position (Oikawa and Kageyama are Senpai and Kohai during middle school for example) -Sensei: Means Teacher, but is also a title for doctors, professors, coaches, etc I know this is a lot to remember, but once you get used to this it's easier to understand the individual's relationship towards one another. Because of the respect culture, people who are younger or lower rank have to be especially mindful of their manners. I believe it was in episode 5 (? correct me if I'm wrong) when Hinata was called out for eating first. I assume he was supposed to wait for his senpais to take a bite first before starting to eat himself (I am making this assumption based on my culture (turkish) where the elders get to choose their seats first and are served food first. It's considered rude for the younger to take a seat and eat first) sorry for the paragraph haha, I hope this helps :) Sidenote: in AoT, they don't address you with the prefixes mentioned, only by rank / profession. Eren's father is a doctor, so they call him Jäger Sensei (pronounced Yeager)

sena

Dang I never noticed that

In the other episode when Yamaguchi asked if he could throw out the broom and Suga said no it's okay, we can tape it and fix it. I'm pretty sure this symbolized Asahi and Noya because during their argument the broom snapped in half representing their bond or friendship or something. Suga said that they can tape the broom and fix it so they can use it again which I think he believed that both Asahi and Noya will come back and make things up basically fixing their bond and the team

@Angad Kang nice to see u here!! Also, I gotta spread the word about Haikyuu to the world 😂

Bibi

It’s nice to see you supporting Haikyu here too I know you from the geks….i hope they watch it next after opm…..🙃🫡

Angad Kang

Beautiful episode! The characters in this anime are so well written. The vulnerability they display through their emotions create connections to us as watchers. We can relate to them on some level when it comes to our fears, hopes, and dreams. And to think that they’re high schoolers experiencing all of this. Most of us have been through that stage in life. I appreciate the way both of you make the correlation between their experiences and yours. The beautiful thing about anime is the emotions it brings out in us. We can’t help but to root for our Karasuno team , our boys, to succeed!

Veronica

Haha, I accidentally watched this episode, before the 8th :D. Thanks for that, I had some confusion :D I started to watch Haikyuu just because of You guys. I love your Deathnote and AoT reactions, so I thought, its a great oportunity to watch reaction vids, like I never did before. Absoult blindly, not knowing the source. :) I've heard it's a fantastic Anime, but never really felt the urge to watch it. Maybe because the hype around it. I'm glad that I gave a chance to it. Maybe was already a question, but, what your opinions about anime in general? What was your opinion before? What do you thought it would be? What was the most surprising moment till now? (in any of the 3 anime) Can't wait to see the upcoming episodes :)

I love that you take time to respond to our comments even if it's just some of them. Back in episode 5 when Daichi brought the team meat buns and Hinata was the first one eating and was yelled at. In Asian culture the upperclassmen get to eat first so it's bad manners for Hinata to eat first. Last Name Azumane First Name Asahi this is one of the few characters that will be called by his first name instead of the last per Japanese custom. Try saying it like Ah-Sah-he. I usually go 8, 9 & 10 together since it closes the set but I do love when Asahi calls for the ball at the end. Also that Kagayama told Suga to keep setting Asahi till he scores understanding that he needs to get his confidence back. Looking forward to the next reactions keep up the great work. 💜

Amithest

No wonder Hinata jumps so high. He does at least 1 hour of cycling uphill every day.

I just joined your VIP tier Patron yesterday because of Haikyuu and I love your reactions and the discussions you guys have it is very refreshing. I love that ending scene when Asahi yells out Suga's name for the spike and he makes the point. I get goosebumbs every time. I don't know if you noticed but Suga and Daichi are always together and it is not just because they are both 3rd years and friends, but it is also because while Daichi is captain Suga is the vice-captain. Suga is considered the mom of the team. He looks out for them and makes sure that they are alright. I should also warn you Suga can also be just as chaotic as Hinata, Tanaka, Noya, and Kageyama, and he has some sass. He is nicknamed Chaotic Suga or A Devil in the disguise of an Angel. It is subtle right now but it does come out. I love you guys love Suga and how he knows what his limits and insecurites are and that he is a team player. He is my favourite anime character of all time right along with Oikawa because I found them to be similar. If you want to know why I will tell you after the season is over so that way I don't spoil anything. I don't know if you noticed but Suga does all the little stuff. He encourages his teammates, he is willing to do anything for the team for them to be successful and you will see he also comes up with their signals and some of their strategizes for their games because he is also very observant of his surroundings. So my question is. Was there ever a point in your time as athletes where you were like Suga or was there someone on your team like Suga.

Nightwing

I forgot to add my question in the first comment but here it is: have either of y'all every experienced a loss of passion or confidence in an activity that fulfills and brightens your life? I personally have experienced it before which is why I can relate to Asahi's struggle.

Lechols

Joined the patreon specifically for these reactions, today. Awesome content that's keeping me going through a difficult time right now. thanks!

OnikeNew

Hello Jared and Jordan. I'm new here and I actually joined the Patreon because of y'all's Haikyuu reactions! One of my favorite anime series of all time, and I have watched an uncountable repertoire of them haha. Haikyuu is a very thought-provoking and deep anime that touches many relational and internal issues, which is the main reason I love it.

Lechols

Amazing two episodes that got me feeling nostalgic, teary-eyed, inspired and excited all at the same time 🥺😢🤩🥹 Thank you J&J 💜💜 Pretty common in anime to see smacks, whacks, slaps, shirt-grabs which sometimes add to the comedic moments. I love it when you see them say the corniest lines or praises with a straight face too 😂😂😂 As Jordan mentioned, I also see that Suga’s moments of honesty when he compares himself to Kageyama gets to Jared. Was there something similar that you experienced before? You dont have to say if you dont want to, thats perfectly okay 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I only started to understand volleyball games because of Haikyuu, if you watch real volleyball games after this you'll be shocked at how "clearly" you can see it. The setter, the ace, the libero, the blockers, even decoys...it's really nice to see each of their moves and understand it. My question: would you be interested in reacting to real volleyball videos? like the short compilations of some Japanese players play

mamimumemo

I was actually about to include him in my comment but then I remembered he hasn't appeared in the show yet hahaha! But yeah, anime VAs in general are just on another level of badass!!! The way they can alter their voices based on the character they play is just next level talent!!! ✨️

nikki

Did you notice who supported Sugawara in his indecision with the last toss? It was none other than his underclassman and fellow setter, Kageyama. “ Sugawara-san!!! Give it to him ‘til he scores!!!” This is a beautiful snapshot of Kageyama’s growing leadership and emotional intelligence. Kageyama recognized a need outside himself and how to meet the need, too (don’t give up, keep tossing to Asahi, and we’ll block as tough as we can until Asahi’s confidence returns). Kageyama is earning his place as the starting setter with more than just his wicked tosses.💕 I love how interactions with Suga are often the catalyst for change in Kageyama. Question: Have you noticed the color of the volleyballs? You will see two different color ways in this series. What significance or purpose may the volleyballs’ colors hold? Question: Asahi is said to have a “glass heart.” Which of the two of you takes situations more personally or to heart vs letting things roll off your back?

antionette7

Couldn’t help the waterworks tonight (or any other time I watch his taste of redemption)! Adore that scene. So proud of Asahi!

antionette7

I’m glad you are watching first in Japanese with subs, but in this episode there is an example where I love the English dub’s flair. Coach Ukai spots Asahi outside the gym, yells at him for being late to practice, and yells for Asahi to tell him which position he plays. As Asahi mumbles “wing spiker,” Coach’s line of dialogue from the English dub is as follows: “Whatever! I don’t care! Get your a** in there and warm up! Chop, chop, Man Bun!”😆

antionette7

Daichi, Suga, Asahi, and Kiyoko are all third-year class as they are all of the same age they also have been playing together for 3 years now so they're more casual with each other. They're very nurturing and grown with the younger but with each other, they are goofy as you can notice when Daichi hits Asahi. Also if you notice when Nishinoya said he practices block follows covering is all because of Asahi because Asahi constantly got blocked and Nishinoya couldn't cover them effectively I think this episode shows that it wasn't just that Asahi was dealing with the loss and the guilt behind it, Noya practiced hard to cover the block and Suga was too scared to give a toss and hid behind Kageyama as he said.

Sally Ahmed

Love how Jared commented on how Asahi and Hinata's spikes were different. To me their spikes seem to be opposite of their personalities. Hinata is super energetic and wants to battle the blockers but doesn't have the power, so his job is to be faster than them and go around or dodge them. Asahi on the other hand seems to be a gentle giant and is scared of the blocks, even though he has the power to go through them.

Wisteria Waters

yessss we need to the movie NOW! it's an L for us international fans 😭

Bibi

Hahaha that man 😂 I left off at their start of S4 😬 on another note, I want access to the new movie NOW when will it be released outside of Japan 😭😭

Ashley K

yea it will be their final batch of Haikyuu reactions 😞 Ange recently said that Haikyuu is his favorite show out of all the shows they reacted to on their channel. Only one that beats Haikyuu is Dragon Ball Z for Ange 😂 Let's see if Haikyuu is still his favorite show after they finish it 🙏 You would definitely love their reaction! What episode of their reaction did you leave off at?

Bibi

Ohh are they finally finished with it? Poor Ange, we know this is his S tier show (or at least from when I last saw their reaction) I need to catch up haha

Ashley K

oh dang tears while working 😂 hang in there! I took a study break and watched J & J's reaction. Waiting for Carlie and Ange to upload their last Hiakyuu reaction 😭

Bibi

Just busy busy busy but I’m goooood. I’ve been on this video for 2 hrs bc I’m working at the same time so constant pausing and finished in tears lmao 😂 how are you Bibi??

Ashley K

Ashleyyyy my girl!!! How are you??

Bibi

My girl is always spot on 🖤

Ashley K

The iconic moment when Asahi screams for another toss after regaining his confidence will always be one of the best and tear jerking moments for me in the show, and the cuts to Daichi, Noya, and Suga getting emotional for their teammate really jerks the tears out of me more 😭

Ashley K

I’m crying 😭 again

Ashley K

Oh ooooops! I must have been daydreaming! Thank you for correcting me. The character that has the same VA as Eren hasn’t show up yet lollll. And yeah… VAs are monsters!

Mel

It was actually Captain Levi who has the same voice actor as Takeda-sensei... which is absolutely craaazzzzyyy!! I'm not used to him voicing a bright, cheery, upbeat character lol.

nikki

chillsssss

Bibi

Last but not least, one of my fav Karasuno member is finally here with the squad..NISHINOYA my boy! Him and Hinata are the two cuties I would want to keep them safe in my pocket lol. The OP changes halfway through the season. For season 1, the OP changes after episode 14, meaning new OP appears at episode 15. Same thing with ED! Also fun fact for you guys since you’re reacting to AoT as well.. Reiner and Asahi have the same voice actor. What’s more surprising is Captain Levi(edited) and Takeda sensei have the same voice actor.

Mel

Seeing how the love/hate relationship some characters have for the sport of Volleyball has developed, can you explain 1: what inspired and drove your love of sports ( basketball in particular )? 2: how does your current motivation and discipline drive your passion for fitness and where did that passion originate from? 3: do you believe we let our anxieties develop into a form of self sabotage? 🫶🏻💜

Cheryl Lambert

Tanaka represents me on this episode!! He's literally me hahaha!!! 🤧 No matter how many times I watch this episode, I just end up bawling my eyes and feel a lot of goosebumps... Also, it's not always pointed out but the soundtrack and bgm on this show is just superb!! It really adds and heightens those emotions!! 🔥

nikki

I was waiting for your reaction to this specific episode when you guys recognized that the broken broom in episode 7 might have a significance! I loved how in episode 7 Suga didn’t want to throw away the broom and stated “we can fix it, and still use it”. He was talking about fixing the problems between Nishinoya and Asahi. The broken broom symbolizes the “broken” relationship between Asahi and Nishinoya. 😭 P.S. If you need recommendation on which episodes to watch together here it is: episodes 10-13, episodes 14-16, episodes 17-18, and the rest of the episodes of season 1 can be based on how much you guys are immune to cliffhangers lol. If you guys want to binge the rest of the season, we are definitely not gonna stop you 😂

Bibi

This is a great episode to highlight earlier comments. Yes, technically this show is about volleyball, but the characters are what makes this show great and so well loved.

Rhast

The Suga SCREAM 🥶 Gives me chills every time🥰🙏🏾

Sean Harding

don't we all :')

bebe

I tear up every time lol

Rhast

if only every day is wed lol

Ntsuab Vwj

the intros and outros change half the way of 25 episodes. But i am not sure how others would consider but I feel like most of the intros doesnt have spoilers unless u know the context. However, i would only prefer you to watch the new ones for the first time only and not during the rest of the episodes because as you continue the story, those intros and outros will prob make u realize sth about the spoilers

bebe

that SUGGGGGAAAAAA moment will always hold a place in my heart

bebe

Yup, here it is. This is the episode they go from "the boys" to "MY BOYS".
