Haikyuu!! 1x7 REACTION!

Comments

I’ve been looking for a comment like this tysm! I feel like at first watch it’s hard to grasp why some characters keep making comments about hinata’s gameplay/capabilities when we’re being told his athleticism is amazing! There’s a big difference between raw potential and skill.

Blue Lock for your next sports anime

Son Goku

I have loved you guys since your first dive on BTS and loved your contents and analysis.. but I finally joined patreon after seeing you start reacting to Haikyuu and anime in general.. The way you do your content and analyze things, anime is just perfect for you guys!! There's a lot of shows on top of my head that I think is perfect for you guys to dive into, even outside of anime like Kdramas and many more.... but since you're just starting your anime journey, let's take it one step a time I guess for the meantime, right?! 😉 I hope the community here grows bigger coz you deserve a bigger audience... Much love to the both of you! You nice, keep going!! 💜

For Miyagi Prefecture, Karasuno has to be top 1 to qualify for Inter-High Nationals/Finals because Miyagi Prefecture only gets one spot since it’s not a large prefecture.

Mel

Thanks so much for this additional insight Charaety!!!

I'm really not usually a commenter on any platform either, so that makes me so happy to hear. Thank you! 🥹

Love your comment! As a Southeast Asian, the culture of being respectful and paying respects to your seniors or elders whether in school, work or in your own family and friends, also the age hierarchy are very evident on, I would say, most asian countries... it's a normal knowledge for us asians and for veteran anime watchers but to first timers in anime and someone from a Western culture like Jared and Jordan, some actions and conversations might seem new and curious to them, so no matter how long the explanations, please keep em coming because it would help them a lot not just with their anime journey but to widen their cultural knowledge as well.. I'm sure they read all comments no matter how long and are very appreciative of the effort given to explain everything to them.. Your comment is very informative and easy to understand, thank you for this! ☺️

The best part for me so far is hearing you two talk about your competitiveness and how already invested in Karasuno you are! I can't wait for you to see more because, from the way you both talk about yourselves and basketball, something tells me you will identify a lot with this show and certain characters ☺️. Okay I swear I won't do this all the time but I realize the harder part about watching a "slice of life" story like this for anyone who isn't familiar with the culture might not pick up on all the common everyday cultural things mentioned. So some things that are not spoilers but to help: 1) In a lot of East Asian cultures the age hierarchy is sometimes more strict. You'll hear some characters talk about this in team settings on the show. So a kouhai (the junior) will more often bow to their senpai (their senior) respectfully but it is more significant for a senpai to bow to their kouhai (their junior). For example - elders often eat first, so Hinata eating the bun before his senpai on a team is generally a no-no because he is the kouhai. Though obviously the boys probably didn't really care and were joking around! 2) The school Aoba Johsai will sometimes be called "Seijoh" - it's a shortened nickname for the school. In English we shorten names by sound (like how people call me Nat). But here the nickname Seijoh comes from the characters (spelling) of the name being shortened. So Aoba Johsai is written as 青葉城西 and is pronounced "Aoba Johsai", but the when shortened by taking out characters to make "青城" it has a different pronunciation when the characters are combined this way and that's why they say "Seijoh". I hope that made sense. 3) I don't think it's explicitly said in the anime but Takeda-sensei is a literature teacher at the school (explains why he's so poetic!) and the club advisor is basically the teacher volunteering to oversee the team/club and its students so that the club can exist at the school. 4) The smacking on the back is often an anime action of teammate/friend encouragement and camaraderie. It's exaggerated but it's meant to be a good thing! I won't drop a question because I think I wrote too much... but loving your thoughts and reactions so far! ❤️

Great point, Jake!!

Jared & Jordan

Sorrrrrry hahaha we wish we had the time to BINGE every single show 😂 they are all literally so damn good. Amazing point about character development! We're so used to rapid character development in movies and some other shows, but we'll definitely try to lessen our expectations! Haha And great question, thank you!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Jared & Jordan

I just want to say how much I have enjoyed watching your reacts. How the show has correlated to your own experiences in your own lives. Question: Was there ever a time that you wanted to do something but was told that you wouldn't be good at it kinda like Hinata with volleyball?

Amithest

Omg I never thought about it that way...indeed it is reminiscent of our 7 bangtan's story of coming together from different backgrounds

IfraH

Happy Valentines Day and thank you so much for the mini binge J&J 😍😍!! I am as excited to see the "Guardian Deity" (again) as much as you are!! Jared said "they are building something special..a team.." - doesn't this remind you of our other "rabbit hole" journey of 7 boys from different walks of life, coming together 😂 just saying.. 💜🙏🏻💜🙏🏻💜

Seen this anime over 10x and i still enjoy it like if it was my first time watching 🥹

Breaking news! People are shorter than Hinata hahaha. Oikawa's serve was just beautiful and you can really tell Kageyama respects him. The Great King indeed. That moment between Kindaichi (Kageyama’s former teammate) and Kageyama always gets to me. Kindaichi didn’t want to accept the fact that Kageyama could evolve as a team player and by realizing that he could made him emotional. Ah yes, Karasuno's Guardian Deity has arrived. You’ll get introduced to so many new characters. I know it may seem overwhelming at first but the names will click. Appreciate your discussions!!

Veronica

I joined your patreon just because of Haikyuu, what really amazed me about this show is the characters, there is a lot of characters shown now and will show later and I’m sure you will love them all, moreover the teams also even if u support karasuno team u can’t help but try to support their revials also, this show shows how real sports is you learn and grow from your against teams you will see later on. It takes me long to decide which character is my favorite but for now im sure you don’t have favorite character since the team is not complete yet and you don’t know the others but i want to know who you are both interested on? Also I will ask you later when there will be more characters. Ps: forgive me for my English skills since it’s not my tongue language 🤍.

Sally Ahmed

Thank you guys again for the binge! Your reactions to new characters brings more excitement to watching the episodes again! There was another clue you guys might have missed while Takeda was talking to Daichi. Guess you’ll have to wait and see if Jared’s prediction is right 😆 Also, you are correct about the cut scenes. It is a practice drill. I’m not sure what others call it, but we called it “spot serving”. Sometimes we’d use a water bottle or a chair. It helped us to improve our serves, practicing control and accuracy. Spot serving can be helpful in “breaking” the other team’s receivers so they can’t set up their offense the way they want to. Perfect example is when Oikawa was targeting Tsukki. Even when the others tried to move back and cover him, Oikawa adjusted the way he served so it could still hit Tsukki. During our games, our Coach would sometimes signal to us which spot they wanted us to serve to or called “sunshine” which was to aim at the other team’s weakest receiver (this was before Haikyuu came out lol). Excited for next week!

Charaety

I appreciate the seriousness with which you approach anime reactions, so I would like it to be an enjoyable adventure not only for us but for you too so if watching with subs makes it harder for you to enjoy and fully dive in in the shows maybe you should watch in dub and have a good time and not suffer to read, watch and try to understand the show at the same time, anyways i really enjoy watching you and appreciate your hard work so i will support you no matter what you decide

Maksik

still gives me the goosebumps no matter how many times i rewatch it!!!

nikki

Man, I freakin love Oikawa!! This is the perfect example of what I said in my last comment of getting to meet and love lots of characters from other teams outside of Karasuno.. like you know they are obviously our competition but you still dont really hate them.. You'll feel this a lot throughout the whole show. :) And I know you'll get used to this as you go forward with the episodes, but Tsukki just speaks with a lot of sarcasm hahaha.. he's a smart lad and he likes to tease his teammates in his own way.. the way he is still calling Kageyama "King" is really more of a teasing manner in this context.. and Tanaka always trying to intimidate their opponents and make those scary faces LOL.. it's the kind of humor that the show has as well but there's also always something deeper that you'll discover with every character along the way... Takeda-sensei and his poetic speeches will never get old for me... :) And with that I guess I wanna ask you in return, if you are in Takeda-sensei's shoes, having experience of your own playing sports, what kind of advice and commentary will you give to these players after seeing that while they are still lacking, they have such immense potential as a team? PS: Thank you for this 3 episode binge, Jared and Jordan.. It's always a good time watching and connecting with you and with our growing community here. I wish it's always Valentines Day just so we can binge watch like this all the time hahaha! Happy Valentines Day, everyone.. Always spread love and kindness to everyone around you!

Some things to emphasize about hinata, at this point in the series and for a lot of the series he does genuinely suck especially at receiving LOL- so if you hear players trash talk him or think little of him when he talks big, they're not just being mean, but that's to be expected as he has a lot less experience and it's easier to root for him as an underdog that way. It's a very common stereotype for new players to only want to hit/spike because of course that looks the most flashy, but receiving is an extremely important fundamental, like making free throws or being able to shoot 3s in todays modern nba. In the real world, if you can't pass you can't play, and his serving and blocking aren't great either. He makes up for it in his raw athleticism/reflexes and desire to win/get better. As of right now, hinata is only good at one thing, but he is really good at it thanks to kageyama whose talent is absurd. The quick that they have started doing is the equivalent of if a point guard in the nba were able to consistently throw an alley oop to someone after that player has already jumped into the air rather than waiting for the pass. Another nba analogy in terms of talent/role is that kageyama is james harden, and hinata is pj tucker making catch and shoot 3s from the corner from kageyama's dimes as that's all hinata can do with the little experience he has, but like pj tucker the spacing creates a decoy for the defense. Also, hinata who is around 5'4 at middle blocker is similar to having someone really short playing center. Middle blockers are almost always the tallest players, so it is really surprising to other teams, but normally quick attacks are done by middle blockers who literally play in the middle so this is the best position for hinata at the moment. The little giant played outside hitter(american term)/wing spiker(japanese term). Also, when people mention being an "ace", it is not a literal position, but rather your star player or player who scores the most which is most often your outside hitter/wing spiker on the left side. If you like this anime now, it only gets much better and better. I do believe that anyone who likes/loves sports will love this anime. My nba/basketball analogies probably aren't perfect, but as someone who plays/watches both sports, I hope that they help.

kringlekrisp

Hehe I'm excited that you met my fave character, the Great King! My question for next time is: have you ever had nerves get the best of you? What happened and how did you snap out of it?

Lauren H.

Hello, Just to quickly give some important background info that the show is not going to explain because it would be known in Japan: The Japanese school year starts around March/April. There are two "National Championships" tournaments per year, one in "Summer" (I think the finals are in like August) and one in Spring (held in January, so near the end of the school year--they're not super accurate season descriptions lol). The team is currently training for the local prefectural tournament to qualify for Summer nationals (they have to place in the top 2, if I recall correctly). Traditionally, third years (seniors) will retire from the team after the Summer tournament to focus on studying for the national exams that everyone takes to get into university (remember Light was the top scorer over in Death Note lol) and to give the rising seniors a chance to start re-building up the team for the Spring tournament. So Daichi and Suga as 3rd years are especially focused on qualifying for the Summer tournament as the crowning experience of their high school volleyball careers.

Lauren H.

Love to hear your predictions. Will they pan out? :) Some VB lingo from this episode: Both Kageyama and Oikawa have a vicious jump serve. The motion of jumping to serve increases the serve’s height and power in turn making it difficult for receivers to control and/or return. “Chance ball” or “free ball” is when the ball comes back over the net without an attack. “One touch” is a call from a blocker to alert their teammates contact was made with the ball and it’s still live and must be played. Question: Give a brief description of one memorable coach in your own athletic history. What made this coach’s approach impactful? Impactful can carry either a positive or negative connotation. Question: What roll (not position) did you play on your sports teams? How would teammates remember you and describe your contributions to the team? Happy happy Valentine’s Day to you both! Thanks for spoiling us with three insightful reactions. Love laughing alongside you guys.

I joined your guy's patreon for Haikyuu :))) It's such an amazing show that has made me love volleyball, a sport I was soo bad at when I was in high school. But I think if I had watched Haikyuu then, I would've given it more of a chance. It's such a fun easy going show that goes by sooo quickly that before you know it, it's already over. So I can only advise you guys to enjoy this thrilling ride. You will for sure look back at it fondly.

farah farah

thank you! for the binge. cant wait for next week and more.

Ntsuab Vwj

Did you guys notice Hinata didn’t close his eyes on that last spike durning the practice match !!

Paypayy

I find Oikawa's reaction to Hinata and Kageyama's "freak attack" to be very telling of his character. instead of being frustrated or annoyed that he lost a match to his underclassman (Kageyama), he was awed and very excited. It really shows his love for volleyball and his admiration for talent, even if it is used against him. This also happened with other players as well throughout the story and I find their reactions to be interesting and showcase how dedicated they are to volleyball. What do you guys think?

Muh-la-lay

I love Oikawa so much his serve is amazing

서현 김

Detective Jared in the building, love to see it :D

MissBrizzy (or Brisbane)

19:00 Yes! I feel so vindicated about my comment on how important receiving is. I hate that I don't hate Oikawa. Oikawa and 'Iwa-chan' are childhood friends. It's kind of why he's so mean to Oikawa. Haikyu will use the word 'genius' to refer to players fairly often, and so do a lot of other sports animes. I would consider that a very direct translation. They don't mean someone very academically smart, but someone who's a huge outlier in skill. It might make it easier to think of it as 'savant.' For example, Kageyama works very hard and practices a lot, but there are just some things he can do that others can't. Maybe the word 'gifted' would also work. They're just naturally talented in this one thing. I only bring this up because I've watched this confuse other reactors. You left yourselves on a great cliff hanger.

Rhast

Takeda-sensei's speeches are so poetic and emotional! I love him so much! 😭

Bibi

Totally agree. Great thought to point out

Rhast

There are two major national tournaments for high school volleyball in Japan (technically three, but Haikyuu doesn't deal with the third one and the format is completely different), the Inter-High and the Spring High. The first to start off is Inter-High which takes place in summer, starts in June and ends in August. The prelims are prefectural and only 1 team from Miyagi Prefecture (where Karasuno is from) gets to represent Miyagi in the national tournament. Some larger prefectures would have districtual prelims and then prefectural prelims. In Haikyuu, there are a total of 60 teams starting off the Inter-High prelims in Miyagi Prefecture. The other tournament Haikyuu deals with is Spring High/Spring Tournament. It starts in October and the nationals/finals takes place in January (finals used to take place in March, hence the name). It's usually hosted by Tokyo Prefecture. There are 52 participating teams in the nationals/finals. Most prefectures get 1 representative spot, but there are three prefectures that get 2 due to their large size and Tokyo gets 3 (two for size, one for hosting). Spring High/Spring Tournament is more major than the Inter-High since this is a volleyball-specific tournament. **ALL PRELIMS AND FINALS ARE SINGLE-ELIMINATIONS.** The third-years aka seniors usually would drop out of team since they need to get into preparation for college exams (because school years in Japan begin in April instead of September, meaning college exams would be around the same time as Spring High Nationals) UNLESS the seniors are planning to go pro for volleyball after high school, then there will be a high possibility for the third-years to stay and continue to compete in Spring High. This could be decided by the players themselves. This means if you’re a third-year, and your team has lost regardless during prelims or finals, you’re officially done with volleyball. Worst case scenario is if you’re a third-year and your team lost during the prelims for Inter-High which is in June, you’re basically done with volleyball as a student only two months after your senior year started. If you don’t plan on being a pro volleyball player after high school, that match you lost will be the very last official match you’ve ever played in your life.

Mel

I do feel for Kageyama's teammates. They spent 3 years with a toxic, hostile Kageyama. The player WE know isn't the player THEY know, and it's fair they have a fair bit of animosity towards him based on that, which I feel even Kageyama knows based on his relative passive remarks while Kindaichi is unloading.

Jake Thompson

Oh my gosh I feel like I'm being love bombed lol 🤣 Lol every time y'all are done watching for the week I'm like nooo watch more 😭 but I'm so glad you watch several episodes at once, so thank you! Okay so one thing you may realize with this anime and others is there isn't really instant gratification, so I think you are expecting too much character growth after just one or two 'moments' lol it's realistic to think someone will grow as a person after maybe several trials as opposed to one moment of learning. circling back later to throw out a question! Do you have any predictions about the relationship between the king Kageyama and the great king Oikawa? both setters, both from the same middle school, from what you've seen about their personalities i'm curious to know your thoughts on their relationship.
