Tanaka knew Shojo and Kageyama are still out there so he gave them the hint that normal training starts at 7 so they could get there before the official training starts.

Daichi is such a great captain! He cares about taking the team far but also cares for the individual team members and working together to achieve their dreams.
I personally love Kageyama. He is self-centered but keep in mind that you still have plenty of episodes ahead with so much content.
Also, anime tends to use a lot of “fan service” which tends to be very sexual in nature. Can be considered one of the downsides.

!!! I HOPE THIS FINDS YOU AND HELP YOU GUYS !!!!
Since you seem quite confused or lost about what some words might mean:
Sensei simply means teacher in japanese
Senpai have various meanings but in this context it means an upperclassman. It can be your senior in school or in work. Basically someone who has a higher experience or someone older than you in a hierarchy.
You will also see the suffix "san", "chan" or "kun" frequently connected with the characters names. The suffix "san" usually is used as a polite speech to show respect. So when you see them saying "Tanaka-san", "Daichi-san".. they usually say this towards their senpais, the ones older than them or even to the teachers and coaches.
The suffix "chan" is like an endearment, usually used as a cute way to call the person. This mostly are used for girls or children or people that are really close to you. So when Hinata's friend called him Sho-chan for example, the "sho" is from his name "Shoyo" and then added the "chan" suffix for endearment because he is a close friend. But I think it would be easier for you to just call him Hinata. ☺️
The suffix "kun" is a semi-formal title. Not as formal and polite as "san" and are usually used for younger men or people of the same age. You'll see Hinata usually call Kageyama "Kageyama-kun" throughout the show.
Like Koreans, Japanese also have a very polite culture and language so the hierarchy and age plays a lot of role into their interactions. Like how you say Kageyama seems to listen to Daichi (the captain) even though Kageyama seems to be a more skillful player.. it's because well aside from he is the captain, he is also his senpai because he's a third year.
You'll see a lot of scenes with this name suffix throughout the show and how they address their senpais even for the other teams so I figured you should know atleast these facts so you can understand it better. ☺️
If anyone wants to add something or correct me in any info that might be wrong, please feel free to comment so Jared and Jordan will hopefully read it and will be aware as well. 🤘

"The little giant" is the guy Hinata was watching on TV and who inspired him to become a volleyball player. He's nicknamed that because of amazing skills and jumping ability even though his height is short (reminds you of someone right?😁) yeah so Hinata relates to him a lot and wants to become just like him. He's an alumnus of Karasuno High School and was the ace(that's the position for the best spiker of the team) of their team. The Karasuno High volleyball team reached nationals when he was on the team. I'm telling all this because it's not really a spoiler and there's not much else to know about him. They don’t even show us his face or tell us his real name. He's just a figure of inspiration for Hinata.
Whereas who Kiyoko is you'll learn that soon enough so not going to disclose that.
Oh and you're in for a ride with this anime!! I think it's one of the best sports anime of all time! Every player on the Karasuno team and even some of the players in opposing teams are fleshed out and given depth not just the main characters!!..And you'll see soon enough what the Hinata-Kageyama combo can do😉 So yeah looking forward to the next episodes reaction videos..I hope you react to at least 2 episodes in a single reaction video only 1 seems too short 🙏🏻

Questions for you: 1. What are your thoughts on hinata and kageyama challenging the upperclassmen to a match? Was it a good idea or too rash/egotistic? and what would you have done in their place under those circumstances?
2. What do you think about kageyama taking all of the penalty and not being able to play setter if he and hinata lose the 3 on 3? Are daichi’s (the captain) reasons justified?
3. Do you think hinata and kageyama will get their act together in time for the 3 on 3? What do you think that process will look like and how will it go? Do you think they’ll end up winning?
4. Any predictions for what the other two first years will be like? Or why kageyama doesn’t like being called “king of the court”? Or even where the coach is 😂
Also just wanted to say hi and that I HAD to join the Patreon after seeing you guys were doing death note AND haikyuu!! They’re such good picks as an intro into anime - death note gets you hooked with fast paced plot and psychological intrigue/moral dilemmas, while haikyuu is so feel good and character driven that not only will you care about every single member of this team, but by the time this is over you’ll even care about the benchwarmers on OPPOSING teams and maybe even their coaches too (which I know sounds crazy but that’s just how it is). And some of the characters might seem a bit over the top at first since you’re new to anime, but the character writing is actually very grounded and purposeful with specific themes/life lessons in mind (which pays off big time especially as the series goes on) so I think you’ll be fine!
I’m also super interested to see which characters and teams you’ll end up gravitating towards, because while we all love karasuno, I think this is one of the few shows where the fandom’s favorite characters are pretty evenly spread amongst all the main teams. Like the “antagonists” aren’t just opponents to get through but are just as beloved as the karasuno members (if not more). And of course when we start the games… well, it’s not called HYPEkyuu for nothing ;) Hope you enjoy the journey!

The upperclassman with the gray hair "Suga" says "aren't teams supposed to come together gradually anyways?" Do y'all have any stories of prior teammates you disliked at first but ended up being a great teammate and friend off the court?

The "Ace" is usually the most capable attacker (spiker) on the team. They are tasked with hitting balls in tough situations, especially when the receive is bad and a good set cannot be made. Essentially the clutch guy you give the ball to make the buzzer beater.

The Little Giant is the player Hinata saw on television who jumped super high regardless of being relatively short in volleyball matches. He is an alumni already since Hinata saw that one match on television 3-4 years ago, meaning the Little Giant has already graduated.
Kiyoko, the girl, is the “manager” of the team, a manager would do pretty much all the preparation work for the team, such as preparing water bottles during matches, taking care of team uniforms and first aid kit, etc.
There will also be a supervisor/advisor for the sports team in schools, who will be in charge for the team and take responsibilities. This position is usually a teacher from the school and doesn’t necessarily need to know the sport.

Ohhh this is getting better! Thank you J&J as always, this really does bring back memories of my time representing high school and uni for volleyball! The shoes squeaking on the smooth floor in the court, the spiking sounds, oh the feeling always gives me the tingles ahh! Love the photo at the end! Look at you two all serious and focused 😍😍
Volleyball Pros here have answered all your questions perfectly and provided more clarity on certain parts too so no need for me to repeat 😄
I briefly played netball and basketball in elementary school or junior high as well and though I cant really remember the details (because volleyball took over my heart and body after lol), Im interested to know what positions you both played in basketball and if you had played in more than 1 position, what was (or still is) your fav position?
Looking forward for next and next! Borahae 💜🙏🏻💜🙏🏻

FYI, to make it simple for you guys to watch Haikyuu, the 1st year students here are the sophomores in the States, 2nd year is junior year, 3rd year is senior year since high schools in Japan have 3 years in total.
(Junior high aka middle school is also 3 years in total, 1st year in junior high would be equivalent to 7th grade in the States.)
Hinata Shoyo
Family name/last name: Hinata
First name: Shoyo
Family name are used more often unless the two are very close.
Senpai: upperclassmen/seniors, so for example a 1st year would call a 2nd/3rd year “last name + senpai” to show respect.
Sensei: teachers
Also, school years in Japan starts in April instead of September.
These are some information that you would need to know if you intend to react to more anime in the future.

Kageyama means "shadow mountain" and Shoyo means "small sun". Together they can create a breathtaking scene of a sun rising above the mountain.

Karasuno translates to "crow of", as in their school literally means "school of crows", hence all the crow references. (hmm, if Light Yagami goes to this school does it become "murder of crows"?)

Also, the libero position, mentioned in Ep 1, is a back court defensive specialist. To demarcate a libero on the court, look for the player in an opposite colored jersey. As an example, if Karasuno is in black, their libero will be in orange. If Karasuno is in orange, their libero will be in black.

In VB, the setter would be the equivalent of a QB in football or PG in basketball. Kageyama described the position as the control tower. Setters are often leaders and play-callers and drive the offense.
The ace is your strongest hitter (or sometimes your best all-rounder) and develops a close relationship with the setter; same as a QB and their most talented and reliable receiver or carrier.

Left a few comments on Ep 1 on YouTube, too. Look there.
The Little Giant is an alumnus of Karasuno. He was an ace. He was short but he could jump and led Karasuno to their last visit to nationals. That’s why Hinata was inspired as an elementary schooler (by The Little Giant) to play VB and attend Karasuno.
Daichi, the architect, is a third-year and team captain (high school is three years) and wants to take Karasuno back to nationals like the Little Giant did in the past and restore Karsuno’s glory days.
Kiyoko, the woman, is team manager.
Crows are the mascot of Karasuno.

okay so with the girl showing up, now you’ve seen one of the negative sides of anime. this is what we all call “fan service.” anime, especially shonen, has an icky habit of reducing women to nothing but fill ins used to attract more guys. they make them hot and insert shots of them like you saw in this ep, or worse. haikyuu does that same thing at times. the girls do get great character development eventually, which is more than i can say for most shonen, but they definitely start as just accessories here too.

Hinata and Kageyama were forbidden from using the gym.
So Tanaka "asked" the volleyball club about when practice starts, so that the three of them could use the gym without the other members knowing.
As the club's practice starts at 7 am;
Hinata, Kageyama and Tanaka decided to secretly use the gym at 5 am.

Soon as your YT reaction ended I went straight here. So exciting to see the 2nd episode up already!
Daichi is the captain’s name. He does have a commanding presence but a good head on his shoulders. I thought it was pretty cool how you guys compared him to an architect, Coach Carter and Bang PD.
🏐2 Questions for you guys:
1. Does this make you want to try playing volleyball?!
2. So far you saw or learned about 2 positions: setter and spiker (hitter). If you did take up volleyball, which position would you like to try playing? And why?
I’ll most definitely ask this later on too once you’ve learned more about all the positions and the game itself ☺️
Also, again feel free to binge 🤪

“Little Giant” was a Karasuno High School volleyball player that Shoyo saw on national TV in the beginning of episode 1. Little Giant gave Shoyo inspiration to play volleyball! That player was nicknamed “little giant” because despite being short (like Shoyo) he was a force to be reckoned with!
The captain’s name is Sawamura Daichi ( you can call him Daichi) and yes he does exhibit many leadership qualities! The buzzcut hair player that helped Kageyema and Shoyo get into the gym is Tanaka Ryuunosuke (you can call him Tanaka). The nice grey hair player next to Daichi and Tanaka is named Koshi Sugawara (he is nicknamed Suga 😍). High school in Japan is 3 years long. Both Daichi and Suga are 3rd years while Tanaka is 2nd year. Shoyo, Kageyama and the two new players they are going to be competing against are all 1st years.
The ace is not an official position in volleyball but an ace player refers to someone who is the most reliable. Ace player is basically someone who the team can count on to score points when things get difficult !! "Ace" title is commonly given to the best offensive player, like a spiker.

OMG I didn't expect another one today 😍😍
The Little Giant was a student at Karasuno that Shoyo saw on TV 3-4 years ago so he is no longer in high school, but he was small like Shoyo hense 'little giant'
Names might be confusing but they call each other by their last names unless they are close, and then they will call each other by first names or add 'chan' to the end of their name if they are friendlier.
coming back a little later to comment about the school system you will need to get used to for modern day set animes. So during their "middle school" final year they will take entrance exams to try and get into a high school, better high schools that are more prep for college take higher grades to get into, so Kageyama was not good enough to get into the school he wanted and he also didn't get a sports scholarship either. he was in middle school like Shoyo and they both ended up entering high school at Karasuno, he didn't transfer schools. high school is 3 years so they will be 1st years and then there will be second years and third years on the team as well. the shaved head kid is a second year which is why he was happy to be called 'senpai' because he is new to being a senpai, seeing as he was a 1st year prior to that.
please don't mind the fan service, though i don't think it's as bad in haikyu as it is in many other anime they do really lean into Kyoko being 'super hot'. they also kind of call it out sometimes as well so it's self aware. but as you said, this is an anime about teenage boys. you will see in other shows how they objectify women pretty badly, even if the characters are well written or powerful they will usually be sexualized as well, and it's just something that i've gotten used to.
