Part 1 of 2 (P2 tomorrow).
I knew from the moment I received the phone call that I was in for a difficult evening. Part of me considered declining the offer, but I was a broke twenty one year old, desperately trying to make my way through college, so I didn’t have much of an option.
The Donovans were a wealthy family who my parents had gotten close to over the years. Alec Donovan, the father, owned a string of car dealerships, and my own dad was a regular customer. They had two sons, Luke and Callum. Luke was still a kid, but Callum had turned eighteen recently, so when Linda, the mom, had called me out of the blue, asking me to babysit, I was rather surprised.
“Isn’t Callum eighteen?” I’d asked.
“Ugh, don’t get me started on Callum” she had told me, “that boy can barely look after himself lately, let alone Luke!”.
Babysitting had never been my gig. Kids irritated me for the most part, and trying to control the little monsters was downright impossible, but when Linda offered me two hundred bucks to keep an eye on them overnight, how could I refuse?
Their house was exactly what you’d expect a rich family’s house to be like. They lived over on the ‘nice’ side of town, with views overlooking the hills, and other large properties dotted around the area. They had a collection of fancy cars in their drive, which I gawped at once I’d gotten by the large electric gates that kept their privacy, and their home looked like something from a trendy magazine.
“Thanks so much for coming, Daniel” Alec said, shaking my hand in both of his. “You’re a lifesaver”.
I smiled back at him as he invited me inside, and immediately I was in awe. The hallway was huge and decorated mostly in white. The floor was made up of large, marble tiles that ran off into many rooms either side. As we passed by one of them, I looked in to find a huge office space. On the other side, a games room with arcade machines, large televisions, plush couches and a pool table. I imagined what it would have been like growing up in a place like this, until I found Luke.
“You remember Daniel, don’t you, Luke?” His dad asked, and the boy regarded me for a moment before nodding and returning to his iPad.
“It’s all he does now” Alec explained, “kids, am I right?”
I smiled again. I didn’t feel too qualified to have a discussion about children, but from what I could see, Luke seemed like the type of kid to sit with his iPad all night, which suited me just fine.
“Help yourself to anything in the refrigerator” Alec continued, and judging by the sheer size of it, I imagined that there was more than enough inside to feed an army of people. “Luke goes to bed around nine, but don’t worry about it. He’s pretty independent lately, so he’ll do his own thing”.
“Sure, no problem” I nodded.
Linda appeared in a very luxurious looking dress, and fixed an earring as she greeted me. Just like her husband, she was incredibly good looking, and laid a kiss on my cheek as the sweet scent of her perfume washed over me.
“Thank you for this, Daniel” she said, hurrying around the room, “you have no idea how difficult it is to find a babysitter these days”.
All I could do was smile awkwardly. The fact that nobody had yet mentioned their literal adult son, was making me more worried. Finally, Alec bit.
“Callum spends all of his time in his bedroom” he said, “you probably won’t even see him, unless he drags himself downstairs to graze”.
“Stop that” Linda said, but I could see the smile on her face.
“He’s grounded, by the way” the man continued, and I cocked a brow. It sounded rather strange that they had grounded an eighteen year old, but who was I to judge?
“He’s been mixing with the wrong sort, lately” Linda told me, “and if he lives under our roof, he’ll follow our rules”.
I nodded, though I had no experience with a strict household. My own parents had always been relatively easy going.
“You have both of our phone numbers” Alec said, as he picked up his suit jacket, “if you need anything at all, just give us a call”.
“No problem”.
“We should be back early tomorrow morning, the guest bedroom is already prepared for you”.
“Thanks”.
“Thank you!” Linda beamed, and gave me one more kiss on the cheek before the two of them left.
“So” I said, once they’d driven off, “do you um… Do you like Fortnite?”
I had no idea what else to say to a ten year old, but the cold look that he returned told me that Fortnite wasn’t it. He hopped off the stool with his iPad and patted my arm.
“Don’t try to be cool” he said, shaking his head, “you’re too old to be cool”.
I nodded as he disappeared up the stairs, and laughed to myself before grabbing a Coke from their gigantic fridge and taking a look around the impressive downstairs of their house.
It was difficult to imagine living in a place like that. I was certain that had my parents been that wealthy, and owned a house like this one, that I would have spent most of my time getting lost in the endless rooms. They had a dining room, a laundry room and a utility room off the kitchen. They had two offices, a games room, a theatre room and two living rooms off the hall. I eventually sat myself down in the smaller of the two living rooms, and remained there for the following couple of hours, until, just like Alec had predicted, Callum came down to graze.
He’d always been relatively quiet any time I’d met him previously. Aside from that, he took after both of his parents in the looks department. He had dirty blond hair, which was almost sandy brown, and a cute face which he usually kept mostly hidden under a hoody. He wasn’t particularly tall or muscular, but then again, it was difficult to tell.
I expected him to return to his bedroom once he’d gotten his snacks, but as he passed by the living room, he stopped and opened the door.
“I’m going out” he told me, and it felt strange to be the one responsible for a guy who was three years younger than me. I grimaced when he said the words.
“Um… Your dad said that you’re grounded” I said, and cringed at myself.
Callum glared at me as though I was the one who’d grounded him.
“Come on, man” he sighed, “just an hour?”
I grimaced again. How did parents do this shit?
“I’m sorry, man. Your dad will chew me out if you go”.
His jaw tensed up. I could see the anger in his eyes, and instead of leaving, Callum walked into the room and sat down opposite me.
“Why are you even here?” He asked bitterly. “I’m eighteen, I don’t need a babysitter”.
“I uh… I think it’s more for your brother, to be honest”.
“Do you not think I can look after my own brother?”
“Dude, I didn’t ask for this. Your mom called me”.
“Well, you can go” he said, and I rolled my eyes. “I’m serious, you can go. You’ll still get your money, I won’t tell them”.
“I can’t go” I said, and Callum looked even more furious as he sat back on the couch.
The room fell silent for a while, other than the sound of the seventy inch television. I knew that he was purposely making it awkward in the hope that I’d eventually give up and leave, but the longer we sat there, the more I wanted to spite him, until Callum said something that changed the entire night.
“I’ll suck your dick if you let me out”.
