"What do you mean you're not coming?" Noah snapped, pulling the phone away from his ear and shaking his head.
"Lyndsey, we've been planning this for months!" The six foot two, jock like man groaned.
Theo continued driving, though he knew that he'd be told to turn around as soon as his best friend got off the phone.
"No big deal?!" Noah growled "we were supposed to... You know?" He turned his head away from Theo and whispered something into the phone.
"Another time?!" He barked "when will we ever get the chance to have a lake house to ourselves?!"
The couple continued bickering over the phone until finally Lyndsey hung up.
"What a bitch!" Noah sighed, sinking into the chair.
"I guess she's not coming?" Theo asked, a partial grin spreading across his cute face.
"What gave you that impression?" His older friend scoffed.
"Want me to turn around?"
Noah considered the question for a moment before shaking his head.
"Nah, fuck it. We'll probably have a better time without her"
Theo looked impressed as they continued on their journey.
The lake house was owned by his father, and had been the location of every family gathering, party and special occasion for as long as Theo could remember. Now that he'd turned eighteen, his father had finally decided to allow him the use of it, for one weekend only, and on the condition that there was to be no partying and no drinking.
"You got the beer?" He asked Noah who was hanging his head out the window. He nodded.
Noah was a strikingly handsome young man, which was really no surprise given his lineage. His mom and dad had been together since high school, winning prom king and queen respectively. Rumour had it that his mom had once been a Playboy Bunny, though Noah, understandably, preferred to avoid the subject.
His father was also ridiculously good looking, so it stood to reason that Noah would inherit the family genes, which he very much had.
He had dark hair, and dark features too, as though there was an element of Italian in him. His eyes were large and deep, his jawline was sharp, and his body was as perfectly sculpted as anyone could wish for.
Theo on the other hand, was far more boyish than his nineteen-year-old co-pilot. He had a clump of dirty blonde hair which had remained terribly untamed since his childhood. His skin was paler, though quite sun kissed given the time of year. His blue eyes were his most redeeming quality, light and almost sparkling.
He was shorter than his athletic friend too, by at least four or five inches, and his physique had remained the same for quite some time. Bordering on lean, but still within the clutches of teenage scrawniness.
It was an eight hour round trip to the lake house, and by the time the boys got there, both of them were hungry, tired and thirsty.
"Holy shit" Noah mouthed in awe as his friend pulled off the long, forest road that they'd been driving on for the last hour.
The lake house came into view at the end of a winding lane, covered on either side by trees as high as the eye could see. The sun could only barely break through the cover of green above them, but the old wooden house stood tall at the end.
It was two stories high, and as wide as a normal house, behind it, the calm lake glimmered against the sunlight and a single rickety boat bobbed peacefully beside a wooden walkway.
"What do you think?" Theo asked, stepping out of the car.
"This is nicer than my actual house" Noah gawped, looking all around in amazement as birds, rabbits and other forest animals darted around them.
"Mine too" Theo grinned and the pair of them grabbed their bags and walked inside.
It took a few tries for the key to finally work in the old lock, but eventually the pair of them pushed their way into an old, musky living room.
Theo pulled open a pair of curtains, allowing beams of light to illuminate the dust inside, and opened the window.
"I think we should let it air out" he told Noah, waving away dust from his face.
The two boys travelled around the house, pulling open windows and exploring as they went, until finally they returned to the living room, which was now mostly cleared out.
It was quite large, with an old television in the corner, a huge open fireplace and a chunky, 1980's style sofa in the centre. The kitchen area was directly behind them in the open plan space, and had everything that two teenage boys would need to survive for a weekend.
"Wanna have a beer at the lake?" Theo suggested and Noah had barely allowed his friend to finish his sentence before darting out of the house and toward the water.
Theo grabbed four beers, threw them into a bag and took a towel for good measure. It was the middle of summer, and they'd left early to get here with enough time to enjoy the midday sun.
He followed his friend, watching as the muscular young man disappeared through the trees and heard him as he howled out in celebration.
"YEAH BABY!" He hollered and birds, high in the trees, fluttered away.
No matter how many times Theo had walked this route, it never failed to amaze him. It felt as though he was in a place that didn't belong in real life. It was magical, and almost completely untouched by humans. There was no trash, no screaming kids, no loud music, just nature.
"Dude, this is fucking sick!" Noah beamed as Theo reached him.
They stood on the wooden walkway now, which carried on out into the lake where the boat sat. Either side of them were patches of the greenest grass, and all around the lake, covering it in as though attempting to protect a secret, an army of huge trees stood, towering above them.
"I've never seen anything like it" Noah continued, evidently still in awe.
"Right?" Theo nodded.
The pair of young men stood, dazed for a while as they took it all in until finally Noah reached into the bag, pulled out two beers and handed one to his best friend.
"To a great weekend" he beamed, popping open the can and tapping it off Theo's.
"To a great weekend" Theo repeated and the two of them gulped the first of many beers in the scorching sun.
Theo envied his friend. Not in a mean way, but in quite a natural way, given his circumstances. The pair had been friends since they were just six and seven-years-old, remaining inseparable throughout their childhood and teenage years. Though despite their unbreakable bond, they lived completely separate lives.
Noah was a confident, charismatic, outgoing kind of guy. His circle of friends had always been vastly larger than Theo's, but even still, Noah had always made more time for Theo than any of the others. He was extremely athletic, and the likelihood was that in just a few months, the two of them would be separated when Noah got his football scholarship.
It wasn't just the social aspects that differentiated them. Theo came from a family with values that were far different to Noah's. For one, his parents were far more liberal than Noah's, even though his mom was a Playboy Bunny.
Theo's family believed in equal rights, they believed in fairness and equality and his mom even volunteered at the local food bank, because that was just the kind of people they were.
Noah's family, were quite the opposite. His dad was a politician, and though neither of the boys had much interest in it, they both knew the type of politics Noah's family supported. Thankfully, the majority of his parent's views had not rubbed off on their son, or at least, if they did, Noah didn't let Theo know about them.
Unfortunately, that was where the biggest hurdle lay. Theo was gay, and he'd known for the last number of years. He hadn't told a soul, and didn't plan to either, not while he still lived in Branford, anyway.
He had become a master at hiding it, and knew beyond a doubt, that nobody suspected a thing. He'd had girlfriends, and commented on them regularly. He genuinely enjoyed sport, which seemed to keep the pressure off, and overall, he would easily be described as being rather on the masculine side.
All of that however, didn't take away from the unfortunate reality that Theo was sure of. If Noah ever found out that his best friend was gay, the friendship would likely crumble.
Theo didn't blame his older friend. His parents had been feeding him nonsensical anti-everything stories since he was a child, so it was only natural that he would grow up to be a lot more narrow minded than his friend, but it made it no less upsetting that their entire friendship, years and years of fun, memories, laughter and bonding, would be destroyed over something as simple as Theo's sexuality.
"You gonna get in?" Noah asked, finally breaking the comfortable silence.
"Sure" Theo shrugged "I'm just gonna' finish this" he added, holding up his half empty can of beer.
"Suit yourself!"
Noah stood up, towering above Theo who watched him as the sun swarmed his frame. The young man pulled his t-shirt over his head, revealing the most amazing body Theo had ever seen. He wasn't overly muscular, but just enough to make mouths water.
He continued to stare at the back of his friend as he hooked his thumbs into the waistband of his black shorts and slid them down his thick thighs.
Theo turned his head away. He'd tried and tried and tried again to stop the ever looming fantasies of his best friend from entering his mind. It was a constant battle, one that he was determined to win. He could never jeopardise their friendship over something as stupid as being painfully attracted to him.
His perfect ass could be seen clearly through his tight white boxer briefs as he discarded his shorts, pulled off his shoes and socks and began walking down the wooden pier. Theo followed him with his eyes, unable to peel them away from the magnificent sight until Noah reached the end.
"Is it cold!?" He called back up to Theo who laughed.
"How should I know!?" He shouted back and Noah cannonballed into the water.
If nothing else, at least Theo would have a lot to look at this weekend.
