Hey everyone, and happy new release... Friday?! Yes, that's right! I'm releasing on a Friday instead of my normal Monday, as I have a very special project in store for you today.
I have collaborated with prominent Dark Fantasy map maker Eledryll maps to create this two-part dungeon. This was a very exciting project as I'm a huge fan of Eledryll's work, and I believe both our styles complement each other nicely. So today, you'll not only be getting my map, "The Lost Catacombs," but Eledryll's map, "Shadenhäl Catacombs," as well! A 60x60 two-level dungeon crawl for your players to explore, get lost, and fight tons of spooky monsters.
These collab projects are a great way to show off the skills of other map makers in the industry and highlight what makes maps so special. Eledryll not only creates awesome maps but also offers tons of unique variants, such as "Fungal" or "Vampiric," which completely change the look and mood of the map to fit your setting. Maybe your party is exploring a lost sunken dungeon at the bottom of a marshy swamp? Well, the "Sunken" version would be a perfect fit! Eledryll also creates a full story hook and room description for each section of their map to further help you run/plan your session!

The 1st level of the dungeon is my map called "The Lost Catacombs," and it features sprawling, twisting, and turning catacombs littered with hundreds of bones. I created this dungeon not only be large, but also non-linear, which forces exploration and gives you a lot of opportunity to create a spooky, monster-filled dungeon.
Entrance to the CatacombEledryll and I have aligned the three entry points that transition from my map to theirs, so it feels consistent when your player descends to the lower levels.
I placed the main door, which leads to the bottom dungeon, relatively near the entrance to my map, but I recommend making this door magically locked, with your party having to find two inner-locking keys that fit into the grooves of the door to break the magic seal.
You can use this description for the boxed text:
As the sounds of crunching bones echo through these endless halls, you find yourself in a room with two sets of looming doors. To the north, a set of wooden doors greets you with beastial door handles with leering eyes. To the south, an ornate metal door inlaid with intricate patterns of bones and robed, skeletal figures. In the center of the door appears to be a depression that would fit two halves of what could only be a "key".
If your players attempt to tamper with the door or pick the lock, have them roll a Perception or Arcana check to realize the door is magically sealed and forcing it open would cause that magic to surge forward at the would-be burglar.
Main Stairway Leading to the Lower LevelsI would recommend adding two mini-bosses of your choosing and placing them apart throughout the dungeon to encourage exploration. I've created two areas that I would recommend you place them, but really, it's up to you! For less combat-oriented groups, you could bury one piece in the collapsed floor to the south and have the players solve a puzzle to descend the crumpling stone to retrieve it, or hide another piece in a chest, which they must solve a puzzle to open.
For the mini boss locations, I would recommend the following.
North of the hallway, once they open the large double doors. I even included a skeleton wearing plate armor that could arise to defend the catacombs. Perhaps it could be wearing one part of the key around its neck?
Mini-Boss #1 Recommended RoomFor the second mini-boss, I would add them to the room in the bottom right corner of the map, which has the various skeletons lying on stone slabs. A spell-casting undead would work great here with those skeletons rising to defend their master.
Mini-Boss #2 Recommended RoomAdditionally, for those parties who would prefer to explore and sneak around instead of fighting their way through hordes of undead, I added two secret doors that correspond to the stairs leading to the lower levels of Shadenhäl Catacombs. You'll find both the bottom right and bottom left of the map to have false walls, which lead to secret hallways and staircases. Let's reward those sneaky rogues for checking for traps and hidden passageways!

For the full list of room descriptions for Eledryll's map, be sure to check out how post here!
I also created the following variants:
No Lights
With Fog
No Arches/doors (in case you find the arches getting in the way of token placement)
And for my VTT crowd, an Arch / Door overlay tile that you can use to move tokens under! This is what I'll have in the Foundry module, so you can move your tokens under each archway.
For Eledryll's Map, there are the following variants:
Base Map (both with and without lights)
Curse Flames
Fog
Fungal
Vampiric
Sunken

Note, my module will only contain "The Lost Catacombs" map, but be sure to check out Eledryll's page for a version of his map's module!

I really hope you enjoyed this collaboration and can find some use for both maps in your games. Both Eledryll and I worked very hard to create an immersive and robust dungeon that would suit all sorts of play styles. It was also an absolute pleasure working with Eledryll, and I hope we get to do this again in the future.
Speaking of "Absolute", next month I have another map collab project planned with map maker D&Demetrius, and both of us are going to be creating a Baldur's Gate 3-inspired location, both exterior and interior! I will share more project details in Feb, so stay tuned.
Next month, I'll be releasing a new map for Saltmarsh, DragnaCarta's CoS Reloaded, and Lothburgh, so a lot more maps and varied locations are coming your way!
Additionally, I'm gearing up to get some new assets created for more V2.0 locations for CoS, including the Vistani Camp, Van Richten's Tower, and the murky swamps of Berez. I can't wait to share what I'm cooking up with you all.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support, which acts as a font of inspiration for me to create! And special thanks to Eledryll for partnering with me on this project.
Cheers friends,
DM Andy
