Hello everyone, and happy New Release Monday! Today, I am launching my newest map for the Gothic City, and this time expanding to the main central point of the city, the Town Square.
For my Curse of Strahd fans, this city was inspired by the town square in Vallaki, and I even created a variant with a massive sun effigy for the Festival of the Blazing Sun!
Whether you're looking for a central place for your party to meet, shop, roleplay, or have a showdown with the corrupt city guards, this map will have plenty of playable area surrounded by the details of the city buildings.

Starting with the focal point of the map, I wanted to include the city fountain set on top of large circular steps set on top of a blazing sun mosaic. Most of the town congregates here to get fresh water for the day, and this area is always bustling with crowds and activities.

Near the fountain, you will spot the stocks built on top of a wooden platform so that those who have been convicted of crimes would be easily visible. I opted to use the ankle stocks here instead of the traditional pillories, as it made more sense in the context of CoS. I imagine a row of villagers sitting there with their ankles trapped within the stocks while wearing the donkey heads the Baron puts on them. You'll notice rotten vegetables thrown at these prisoners, and all are encouraged to buy old produce from the local vendors and throw it at the prisoners to humiliate them. I also included a light source so even at night, they would still be visible, as well as a podium for the town guard captain or even the Baron himself to speak at. Altogether, there is enough room here for ten prisoners to be sentenced to public humiliation.

I wanted the buildings themselves to feel as if they were towering over the players when they entered this scene. Multi-story tenement buildings with various shops on the ground floor are iconic to medieval-style cityscapes, and I wanted to capture both the height of these buildings and also the crowded nature in which most of the villagers live. This includes sky-bridges connecting most of the buildings.
For my Foundry VTT crowd, I've built each cluster of buildings as its own layer, and you'll be able to move tokens in the alleyways between the buildings easily.

And lastly, I created an optional "Sun Effigy" which is displayed in front of the fountain and in the open space where most villagers can see it. This is a spherical "sun" made from wicker set upon wooden stacks. I added wreaths of lavender and a base of pine, so when it is ignited, it would carry a beautiful floral scent into the air. The blazing sun is an act of defiance to their dark lord, but the floral scent also acts as an act of defiance to all things horrible within the dark lands of Barovia. At the base of the stand are jugs filled with oil so each villager can take a turn dousing the sun to ensure it ignites! Let's just hope the rain does not prevent the festival from happening...

This is the last "official" location from the CoS book, so after months of work and long hours, it's fair to say I've finished my re-work of Vallaki in its entirety! The total maps reworked for this town are:
Parchment Map
Town Gates
Blinsky's Toys
Church of St. Andral
Blue Water Inn
Baron's Mansion
Wachterhaus
Town Square
Arasek Stockyards
Coffin Maker's Shop
Phew! That was one hell of a project, but I'm pretty happy with the end results. That's not to say I'm entirely finished with Vallaki, as there are a few other locations I want to flesh out (Such as the Orphanage, an updated Sanguine Rose, and a few more city streets maps), but now I'll be moving westward toward the Luna River. Still a lot of area for me to re-work there (Krezk, Berez, Yester Hill, the Winery, Van Richten's Tower,. etc), so I've got my work cut out for me!
Also... wow! This is my 2nd-to-last map release of 2025?!? It feels like just yesterday I was making maps for Jan, and here we are at the end of the year already.
For my last release of the year, I'm launching a cliffside location for my Saltmarsh crowd, which I hope you'll all enjoy!
And for the last week of the month, I'm taking that Monday off so I can enjoy some downtime with my wife (Dec 29th).
Regardless of the holidays you celebrate around this time of the year, I hope your month is full of nerdy goodness, gaming, epic roleplay moments, and good dice rolls (both for your players and for you, the DM!).
You have all helped to make my dreams of being a map-maker come alive, and I will forever be grateful to you ALL. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!
Cheers friends,
DM Andy
