Carpenter's Guildhall | 40x30

Hello everyone, and happy New Release Monday! Today, I am launching location # 22, inspired by the coastal town of sunny Saltmarsh. This time: The Carpenter's Guildhall.

With 30 locations listed from the book, I am nearly done creating fully detailed and fleshed-out maps for each. This journey has taken me quite some time, but I'm happy to see the progress I've made. Once I'm done, I'll have a full set of maps you can use for any campaign city, especially those featuring coastal areas.

On a personal level, this map means quite a lot to me. In addition to being an artist, my dad was a skilled carpenter and owned his own cabinet shop for many years. I have fond memories of helping him build, sand, and install cabinets when I was a kid, and the smell of sawdust always reminds me of him. Sadly, he's no longer with me, but in my art, I honor him and his memory and traditions as a carpenter. "Measure Twice and Cut Once," he was so fond of saying, and this phrase is immortalized on the placard on the tree trunk within the guildhall.

This map is pretty massive, featuring a total of 4 buildings on the Guild grounds!

The first thing your party will see is a mighty oak tree spanning the entire courtyard. The oak, being a symbol of strong, solid construction, is revered amongst these carpenters and stands as a reminder to build sturdy and to last.

Of course, since the tree itself takes up so much space I have a version both with and without it (along with a tree .png for my VTT tier so you can place it on a foreground layer and move tokens under it).

The four buildings are as follows:

Warehouse

This is where lumber, logs, and wagon wheels are stored. Connected here is a track that feeds into the saw mill, where a log can be loaded onto a cart and pushed into the working saw blades in the mill. Then, once the lumber is cut into planks, they are stored here for use by the carpenters.

Wind-Powered Saw Mill

This location has a small track that connects with the warehouse, where a cart is used to transport a log directly into the sawing blades. The blade mechanism is powered by the wind sails attached to the tower. It rotates a circular beam, which drives the bottom gear to move the vertical gear, which is connected to a horizontal beam. Attached to the beam is a metal winch, which moves the blades up and down automatically and will saw the log into multiple planks when a worker pushes the log through the blades. A set of double doors on the other side allows the carpenters to collect the cut logs for further processing into planks.

Work House

Here is where many workstations are available for carpenters to create. Be it small craft like wooden toys, or larger projects like barrels, wagon wheels, and house beams. There is even an area outside to work on smaller boats for the many fishermen in Saltmarsh. There is a large skylight above and many windows giving lots of natural light for the carpenters to fine-tune their projects.

Guildhall

This is the main guildhall, which acts as a meeting building for all guild affairs. The foyer is grand and contains a living tree within the tall, two-story room. Here, the placard contains the phrase "Measure Twice, Cut Once," and this room acts as a meeting hall for all guild affairs and updates. Carpenters can go to the 2nd-floor balcony and observe as guild business is discussed.

The north wing contains an office for the guild master where guild dues are collected, and guild archives are kept.

The east wing acts as a drafting room where carpenters can blueprint out their ideas and plans for some of the grand buildings around Saltmarsh or the finer ships in the fleet.

The west wing acts as a museum where various rare wood is shown off and tools of notable craftsmen are on display.

For my VTT crowd, you'll find transparent files for the large exterior treetop, all building roofs, and the 2nd floor!

Phew! Two large building complexes back to back (Why do I do this to myself??)! But I was happy with how both the Gothic City Stockyard and Carpenter's Guildhall came out, and I hope you will be too. I should have the VTT module done for the Gothic City Stockyard any day now, and we're working on the Carpenter's Guildhall now. I'll get those both posted up as soon as I can.

Next up will be my next installment for the Lothburgh series I've been working on in collaboration with Lunch Break Heroes. On a personal note, not only have I been making maps for this budding campaign setting, I've been a player in the LBH game as we fine-tune and playtest the adventures. Let me tell you, it's a LOT of fun! I realize I might sound biased since I'm making the maps for it, but I wouldn't have taken on the project if I were not totally inspired by the setting. It's got your grim dark feel to it, lots of intrigue, tons of RP opportunity, exciting adventures (like museum heists, rooftop battles with creatures made from the billowing soot from smoke stacks, and tons of unsolved cases waiting to be investigated).

The next map in this series will feature "The Rookery," which will be a single room at the top of a tall tower in a less-than-reputable area of the city on Nail Street. This is a showdown between your investigators, a missing clockwork constable they were hired to find, and the crime-lord who has been pushing the substance "Velvet Bliss" to the streets. If you haven't had a chance to check out the setting yet, I highly recommend swinging over to LBH's Discord Patreon pages to learn more and keep up to date once the Kickstarter is announced.

Thank you ALL for your continued support of this very small creator. It may not seem like it, but thanks to you all, I am able to make a living doing what I absolutely LOVE, and I am eternally grateful to be given that chance. A chance I promise I will not squander.

Cheers friends,

DM Andy

100%!! The sawdust smell is probably one of my favorites in the world because of my dad. Carpentry is a slowly dying art, and I wish we saw more craftsmanship of old in our modern age. It's probably why I love making building maps in general, because I get to research wooden construction and see how many decorative elements are on even the most basic of pieces. I'm glad this map could resonate with you as well!

Cheers brother. Thank you for all the fantastic work and thank you for sharing your story. My old man's a carpenter as well and the saw dust gets me too and setting foot in a hardware store.
