The Witch Wood

Hello everyone, and happy New Release Monday! It has been a while since I've done a nature map, especially an updated woods map, and so today I bring you the Witch Woods!

I went with a dead, almost "Blair Witch" feel for this forest with bare trees and the forest floor covered in dead foliage.

In the center of the map is a giant rotted tree stump with twisting vines burrowed deep within the earth.

You'll find hanging from the trees various witchy symbols as well as petrified bodies that have been fused with the trunks of the trees!

I created a few different variants for this map to add more flexibility with how you want to use it. These variants are:

Additionally, for my VTT crowd, I'll be providing the transparent tree top files as well, and in the Foundry module, we are utilizing the new top layer with partial transparency so you can move tokens under the branches.

The centerpiece of the map is a large rotted tree stump with twisting vines growing within the ground. The stump itself is covered in fungus, and there are massive slash marks against the bark to hint at something massive and beastial lurking deep within these woods.

For the "Witch" version, you'll find a number of symbols, twigs, feathers, and bones hanging from the bare tree branches. Fused to bark, you'll find petrified bodies that seem to have been melded with the bark and are now part of the trees around the forest. Perhaps an ancient hag's curse for those who have hunted the creature and failed?

The "no tree" version removes the treetop layers so you can easily see tokens on the map without the top branches covering too much of the ground surface area.

I hope you have many fun encounters within these woods! From terrorizing your players with a hag and their minions, or having your players explore a remote forest with beams of sun shining through the twisting branches.

Next week, I am planning on a Hag's Lair encounter map that will pair great with this map or even the Old Bonegrinder Mill for a proper Night Hag coven battlemap!

Additionally, in October, I have spooky maps planned for The Gothic City, Saltmarsh, and Lothburgh, so stay tuned.

Thanks for all of your support!

Cheers friends,

DM Andy

I LOVE adding a dullahan in my game as well. I played off the movie Sleepy Hollow and had the hag coven steal his skull from his grave, commanding him to do their bidding. This map very much fits a Dullahan encounter for sure. You'll have to let me know how it goes!

This is most timely. I have a tradition of using a dullahan in my Strahd campaigns, originally a homebrew enemy as Van Richten's hadn't come out, but with the addition of the tree of heads I had been wanting a map to incorporate that into the new CoS campaign I'm planning.

Thank you!!! The new nature assets that I've been commissioning have really helped bring this piece to life!

This is absolutely perfect!! I don’t know where in my curse of strahd campaign I’ll use it yet, but I’ll use it!
