Hello all, and happy New Release Monday! Today, I am sharing a new outdoor location/encounter map I created called The Mud Pit.
We all know having various outdoor encounter maps is a must-have in all DM toolkits, and I hope this inspires some fun random encounters for your own games.
Personally, I've created an encounter for an NPC my party is looking for (a cheeky little Gnome potion salesman) who has gotten himself in a bit of a bind. The party will find him dangling by (literally) the seat of his pants) from the large oak tree above the mud pit. His hat, {which also serves as his bag of holding and contains his potion inventory) has fallen off his head and is sinking slowly into the mud pit.
Meanwhile, the burrow under the tree was home to a rather hungry owlbear who is clawing at the tree and trying to shake the little gnome down for an afternoon snack! This introduces various elements to the encounter, including environmental hazards and challenges for my party to solve beyond just a simple combat encounter.
This map has two key features:
The mud pit, which covers about a 40-foot area in the center of the map
A burrow under a large, gnarled oak tree on the forested side of the map, just above the mud pit
In addition, this map has plenty of elevation and verticality to make use of the terrain as best as possible.
I have created two versions of the map:
With trees giving that forested feel
Without trees and including the interior of the muddy burrow, which is the perfect spot for a beastie to lair.
For my VTT crowd (and very excitingly for the first time, I might add!) I've also included a tree overlay of both the main oak tree over the burrow and the other surrounding trees (matching each color mood as well). This way, you can use various VTT tools to create a top layer, both the normal trees and the oak tree, over the burrow!

Your support allows me to keep doing what I love, and I don't take that lightly! This community keeps me going, and I thank you all for being a part of it.
Now I'm off to finish my next map, this time we'll head to the salty-air town of Saltmarsh for the Mariners' Guildhall!
Cheers friends,
DM Andy
