Let's Talk About Foundry VTT!
Added 2025-02-21 20:48:37 +0000 UTC
Hey everyone! I'm super excited to showcase a "first look" demo vid of my first-ever VTT module that we have been working on behind the scenes.
This is just a quick look at the built map and UI. I plan to distribute the Blue Water Inn VTT Module for you to test sometime in March.
Over the next month, as we put the finishing touches on this, I'll be asking for feedback and might conduct a few polls to get some general consensus on a few questions to iron out the work we're doing.
As a reminder, anyone signed up in the Champion Tier from now until the end of the month will also get access to the VTT Modules at no additional cost as a thank-you for all of your support over the years. This post has more information about the billing update and changes.
If you're watching this after March 1st, fear not. Once we've polished it enough and launched it, I will have a VTT Tier ready to go that you can sign up under.
Lastly, I will be partnering with Foundry Premium Content, so (most) of my maps will be easy one-click installs once you link your Patreon / Foundry accounts together.
I hope you're all as excited as I am to see this finally come to fruition!
Stay tuned for more Foundry updates in March.
Cheers,
DM Andy

Looking very much forward to this, as it will cut down on my prep time immensly. Have you considered to put all interior levels on one scene instead of multiple scenes per map? With a Party of thieving racoons trying to pocket every bit of loot on multiple levels of a map, it gets super hard to not loose oversight over multiple scenes. Love your work Andy your maps are by far the best I have found so far!

2025-02-25 09:34:15 +0000 UTC100% get you, and I appreciate you understanding my position. I want to ensure the Foundry launch goes as smooth as possible and don't want to bite off more than I can chew haha. I do have plans to expand the modules in the future to include Levels, Sound Effects/music, animations, weather effects, etc. Much like my CoS 2.0 maps, you can look forward to some additional V2.0's of my Foundry modules as well :) I'm so thankful for your support and glad you're excited!

2025-02-23 19:50:08 +0000 UTCAwesome vid! Loving the ability to toggle between the variants - choosing which one I like most is always the hardest thing when uploading to my foundry game. I use levels in my game so not having that functionality is a bit of a shame just for me, but also fully understand your perspective not to go with it. I'm fairly competent with the module and I still run into odd issues with it, so from the pov of avoiding as much complexity as possible, I think thats fair. Defs super excited to see this released regardless!

2025-02-22 20:08:13 +0000 UTCHey there Hans! For maps with an interior, there will systematically be a region called "Region - Interior" that is used to toggle global illumination off. We are planning to do another pass later on with animations / weather effects / sfx, but for now you are able to mask weather effects on your end with this region. As for teleporting between scenes, this is already handled via regions. We make use of MATT (Monk Active Tile Triggers) to handle the UI and on occasion, some door mechanisms on a few maps.

2025-02-22 19:38:29 +0000 UTCHey Chris, thank you so much for your insights! I think Levels is such a cool module, and I know many tables use it in their games. Trust me when I say it was not without much consideration that we ultimately decided not to include it, at least for round one. The time needed to properly isolate & detour the different elements would have pushed back the VTT tier considerably if we had included both levels and standalone versions. Ultimately, we are trying to provide a ready-to-use VTT experience for as many people as possible, which lets us build the back catalog and keep up with the new releases. As for the use of MATT, it's mostly there for the UI and some specific door mechanisms on some maps. That's not to say I will never include Levels in my modules, but since I'm pioneering new territory (for me at least) it was important to me to keep things clean, tidy and as simple as possible so I can get this launched sooner rather than later. I hope in the future I'll be able to update my modules to include Levels though.

2025-02-22 19:36:59 +0000 UTCYou could also make use of the FoundryvTTs build in regions feature, that allows you to mask out things like weather effects, darkness, teleports and so on. These work without any additional modules.

2025-02-22 10:50:01 +0000 UTCAs nice as these releases will be, I think the decision to not use Levels really lets it down. Levels adds such a nice QOL for my players when using your maps as they can move between different floors without having to load into new scenes. If you're already requiring MATT, then the functionality could have been pretty much entirely replaced by Levels surely?

2025-02-22 02:16:26 +0000 UTCI agree! I'm so happy to finally be able to do this. A very long time coming :)

2025-02-21 22:56:09 +0000 UTCI'm so happy to hear how excited you are! I am too and it's been a long time coming. And don't worry about joining a VTT Tier, I'd recommend staying in the Champion tier because even though it will be sunset in March, everyone can stay as a Champion member and still get all the VTT stuff so you won't need to do any tier switching :)

2025-02-21 21:36:32 +0000 UTCI'm SO excited about this! Thanks for all the great content you put out! These Foundry modules are going to drastically change how I prep for sessions. I can't wait to for March! (OR whenever the tier actually hits) Using the Blue Water Inn as your demo actually coincides almost perfectly with one of my games reaching Vallaki, so it's a win-win!
