Hey everyone and happy New Release Monday! I’m thrilled to announce the release of the much-anticipated Old Bonegrinder V2.0! This map holds a special place for me, as it’s a revisit of one I originally created over three years ago.
For this new version, I’ve gone the extra mile by commissioning custom assets to capture the eerie details I envisioned—like the tattered windmill sails and the distinct onion dome roof. It’s been a joy bringing these elements to life, and I hope they add that extra layer of grim atmosphere to your sessions!
I can’t wait to see how you use this fresh take on the Old Bonegrinder in your games. May your players tremble before the horrors of the hags!
And just in case you missed it, I created a fun little trailer for this map, which you can find here.
This release is packed with a lot of files, so instead of multiple .zip files, I’ve organized everything into a Google Drive folder (linked below) due to Patreon’s upload limits.
There are five core maps (Roof, 1st floor, 2nd floor, 3rd floor, and 4th floor), each with variants for height blur and lighting. I wanted to provide flexible options so you can customize the atmosphere for your campaign.
One of the biggest challenges with this map was nailing the perspective while ensuring each floor aligned naturally, creating the feel of ascending the windmill. I also focused on making sure each floor had enough space for token placement, along with the possibility for combat if it breaks out.
I found the original map in the book (while beautifully drawn) to be far too cramped for a standard D&D party and the hags. My version is significantly larger, designed to accommodate larger parites, plus the three hags. However, as you'd expect in a tower, the floors get smaller as you go higher!
I’ve also taken some creative liberties with the atmosphere. In my game, I renamed the location to "The Old Mill", toning down the overtly sinister vibes like the name "Old Bonegrinder." I felt the original version was a bit too obvious about the evil lurking inside. For a more subtle buildup of tension:
I removed the bubbling tar-filled barrel from the first floor but included standard barrels if you want to add them back.
The second floor has small bone fragments in the flour, but they’re subtle—something your players may not notice without a Perception check.
On the third floor, I kept the crates in the closet, but they don’t scream “cages for children”—you can describe them as old, moth-eaten clothing storage if that fits your story.
I also added some Fey-like elements with floral strands tangled in thorny brambles to keep your players second-guessing the nature of the Granny & her daughters —are they truly evil, or something else? The goal is to keep an air of unease without spoiling the reveal.
For a future release (not yet determined when), I plan to create a few variants, including:
A basement level filled with unmistakable hag-themed items (bubbling cauldron, cages, tar barrels, etc.).
A version with restored sails.
An exterior-on-fire version.
A parchment-style map that combines all floors into one for easier token movement, perfect for VTTs.
I hope this map enhances your games and keeps your players on edge! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and how you use the Old Bonegrinder V2.0 in your campaigns!
For my Champion Tier Patrons, you get the following with this map release:
5 Map Levels: 1st floor, 2nd floor, 3rd floor, 4th floor, roof
Height blur for the 2nd floor and above
With and without lights
Six color moods: Gloom, Ghostly, Dark Fairytale, Night, Sunny Day, & Warm
8k & 4k file resolution
Grid & No Grid
Jpg & Webp file formats
I absolutely love October, so I wanted to kick things off with one of the spookiest maps from Curse of Strahd! But the chills don’t stop here—I’ve got even more spooky maps lined up throughout the month, including:
A special Halloween-themed map, inspired by one of my favorite Disney attractions (featuring art by Caleb!)
An eerie abandoned house from The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh.
Each week, I’ll be releasing a new spooky map to help you bring all your horror-themed encounters to life and delight (or terrify) your players!
As always, thank you for your incredible support of my work—it means the world to me!
Cheers,
DM Andy
