Champion Tier - Road to the Old Mill

Hello everyone, and happy New Release Monday! Today, I am releasing my Road to the Old Mill map, which features a twisting road cutting through thorny, brambled, covered grassy hills.

This map is part of my outdoor series of maps, where I create generic outdoor locations to help give you plenty of ideas and maps to run your various traveling and overland encounters. Additionally, I created this map with the Old Bonegrinder from Curse of Strahd in mind, which I'll cover a bit below.

While a map like this will be highly versatile for any campaign setting, I created this map with the Old Bonegrinder specifically in mind. I wanted to feature a hilly road map as opposed to the heavily forested Svalich Woods maps I've done in the past. I wanted to change up the mood a little bit as well and focus more on tall, dead grass and twisting thorny brambles. Most windmills are placed in large hilly terrain where wind is more of a common occurrence anyway, so this felt like a natural landscape to feature as I map my way to re-create the Old Bonegrinder in the future. This also helps to segment different sections of the CoS module so the maps show diversity while still maintaining the horror feel to them.

I also love the feel of the thorny brambles, which I had custom-commissioned specifically for my maps. I wanted to show the gradual corruption of nature by being in the presence of the Hags near the Old Mill and these thorny brambles had a very "Maleficent" feel to them which fit the setting perfectly.

I hope this map gives you some inspiration to hint at the ominous nature of the evil coven taking residence in the old mill looming over the hillside on the horizon!

With this map release, my Champion Tier patrons get the following:

That's a wrap for August! (I can't believe I just wrote those words, which means we are headed toward Fall!). As Sep is a 5 Monday month, and the first Monday also happens to be Labor Day, this map-making is taking a well-deserved day off! This means no map release on Monday, Sep 2nd but don't worry, I still have some exciting things planned for Sep.

On my schedule I have planned the last of my v2.0 maps for the Village of Barovia which will be the Burgomaster's Mansion. I'm excited to have a full set of V2.0 VoB maps finally done and with the Tser Falls region done I'll be mapping my way back down the Old Svalich Road over the next few months.

In addition to the mansion, I'll be creating more Winter's Grasp maps for the Village of Barovia as well as continuing my mapping efforts on the Saltmarsh front.

There should be something for everyone! Also, this will be an exciting months for D&D as the new PHB will be officially released in Sep! Are you excited? For you 5e DM's are you planning on switching over to the new classes? I'm curious to know who will be making the switch in their CoS games and I'm wondering if this will impact the difficulty of the module. Let me know!

Until next time,

Cheers, friends, and thank you for your continued support!

Thanks so much!! I'm currently in the process of having custom assets developed for the mill itself so that'll be my next core location after the Burgomaster Manor in VoB is re-finished. That's good insight regarding the rules. I think I might do some play testing to see how a party of "old" adventurers stacks up against Strahd vs. a party of "new" adventurers (ruleswise) and see if there is a huge shift in power one way or the other. They say it's backwards compatible... but if there was ever an excuse to create a re-updated CoS book it would be now haha.

Beautiful map(s) as always! My party will be approaching the windmill in a session or two, so this is perfectly timed. Thanks! As far as switching to the new ruleset goes: I actually run 2 CoS groups right now. One group is a lot further along, so I'm not going to be changing them. The other group is oversized (7 players) and are only a few sessions in. Because of the size of the group, I already need to rebalanced a lot of encounters anyway, so yes, I'm going to let them switch to the new ruleset. It will definitely make the overall power balance shift a bit, but as I said, I'm rebalancing anyway. Might as well let them play the new content.
