Hey everyone, and happy New Release Monday!
Though I skipped last Monday's release, I was happy with the extra time I needed to finish this map as it is quite detailed. This is the next map in my "Saltmarsh" series; The Barracks & Jail.
Even though I created this map with the module in mind, you can drop this into any campaign that needs a guard barracks and/or jail location. Because let's face it, we all know our players will be breaking the law at some point and hauled off to jail. Now you have a map to play out those encounters!
I created this map with the coast in mind and wanted to give it a sandy, grassy, and sunny feel. With the barracks built onto a low hill, you will see the bounty board to take new jobs near the front entrance. After heading into the foyer, you'll enter the grand hall, where the Guard Captain will greet you to discuss all legal issues in and around the area.
Further into the building, you'll see the gated entrance to the prison located underground (one of the few underground locations). Let's just hope you're not being escorted here in shackles! A set of stairs leads up to the Guard Catpain's quarters, and a hallway takes you further into the barracks. Spotting a few weapon racks, you hear the sounds of clinking plates and glasses as the guards enjoy a hearty fish soup in the mess hall and once they have had their fill and are ready to turn in for the night, they can take turns sharing one of the 30 cots in the sleeping quarters. The guard cook prepares the meals and receives food delivery from a rear entrance where barrels of mead are wheeled up the ramp.
As you head into the courtyard, you will hear the sounds of horses and guards honing their combat skills with sword and bow in the training area. A guard collects a bucket of water from the wall before heading up to the ramparts for their sentry duty. Those near the front gate will ring the bell to signal to the other guards between friend and foe, ensuring the safety of their fellow guardsmen. The clank of hammers and steel can be heard echoing from the small smithy used to fix chipped swords, broken armor and create horseshoes for the steeds housed in the stables.
If you are fortunate enough to see the Guard Captain's quarters upstairs, you first see the library and office with walls lined with rows of legal books, guard activity journals, and bounty scrolls. Behind the doors lie the Captain's personal quarters, where they can survey the grounds and also gain easy access to the sentry tower and outer walls.
Finally, as you ascend the sentry tower's third floor, you will find yourself overlooking the entire structure and providing visibility on all who approach!
Of course, should you have the misfortune of being on the wrong side of the law and taken downstairs to the prison, you'll be marched through the processing area while your gear is stowed in the nearby locker. If you were simply drunk and brawling at the tavern, you'd be tossed into the "tank" for the night to sober up and pay your small fine. But for more severe crimes, you'll be hauled off to a small, dirty, and dark cell toward the back of the damp prison. They even say there is a single cell on its own, warded and protected from magic which they use to house criminal wizards.

Like with most of my building maps, this release is massive in size, with a total of 256 jpg files in all! So sorry for all the .zip files; Patreon has a 199 MB upload limit, and even though the files are small(ish) in size, there are so many of them I had to split up some of the .zip files into multiple parts.
I have created tons of variants and moods in order for you to set the perfect tone for your campaign. From bright and sunny to foggy and dark, you'll have plenty of options to delight your players. This release comes with the following variants:
For my Champion Tier patrons, the files attached to this post contain the following:

Next up, I'll be working on my re-work of the Gates of Barovia map, and one of our community members has offered up some incredible hand-drawn assets for the statues I'm really excited to use! I'm so fortunate to include art from our very talented community in a future map. After this, I'll be syncing with Pyram King as we discuss part 1 of our 3-part dungeon, The Spires of Ravenloft, which will give your players an alternate method to sneak into Castle Ravenloft through the very pillar stone!
I also have not forgotten about some of the requests community members have made, and I hope to have some time to take care of some, if not all, of those requests. This includes creating a "blank" amber sarcophagus map so you can create your own dark vestiges. Along with a cleaned-up version of Castle Ravenlofts chapel and throne room. All of my time outside of my day job has been dedicated to map making, so I've not forgotten about these requests, even if I'm a little slow to get them done.
As always, thank you for your continued support, and I'll catch up with you all for Sneak Peek Thursday.
Cheers,
DM Andy
