Castle Ravenloft Awaits...

"I called for my family, long unseated from their ancient thrones, and brought them here to settle in the castle Ravenloft." - Strahd von Zarovich

Hey everyone! I thought it was time to talk about the 1,000 ton Goth Elephant in the room; Castle Ravenloft. As those of you who have been with me since the beginning know, my goal was always to map out all of CoS before tackling this beast. I felt it important to start with unmapped areas from the book first and then re-work the mapped areas second. My hope was to produce more content in the time it would have taken me to do the Castle so you had more ground to cover for your campaigns. I'm pleased to say after almost 1.5 years of mapping out every last inch of CoS I am ready to start thinking about mapping out the castle!

I have a few projects I'm wrapping up with this month so will most likely start work on this map in Aug. Along with finishing the Interactive Tome of Strahd and the Lunch Break Heroes adventures, I'll be working on the Castle maps as well.

After sitting down and re-reading the castle section (phew! What a section that is to read!) I have finally worked out my map approach and map releases for this monster of a location, which I'm happy to share with you all!

As it stands now, I will have a total of ten map releases for the castle as follows:

I still need to go through other popular content creators work such as DragnaCarta, Lunch Break Heroes, MandyMod and Pyram King to make sure I include any other variations they might have added. Depending on the complexities, I may do these as separate releases.

So there you have it! The Castle alone will keep me pretty busy over the course of the next few months (plus I'm moving in Sep so will need to take some time off for that). After this work is complete, I plan on doing version 2.0 of some of my older maps (I might work in some 2.0 versions in between castle maps to give my sanity a break!). Thankfully, the Interactive Tome of Strahd has already provided me a solid basis for re-works on the Amber Temple 2.0 and the Gulthias Tree 2.0 so you can look forward to that.

Lastly, I still do plan on covering other new locations added by popular mod content such as MandyMod's Orphanage and Reformation Center. And I want to do some maps for Mt. Baratok to cover the encounter with the Mad Mage as written and work with Pyram King to create some custom content for this very underrated section of the book.

Once the fog clears and beams of sunlight start poking through the rain clouds again, we can discuss what module / maps you all would like to see going forward! Though I suspect I still have may more moths of work ahead of me. My heart is always keen toward Dark Fantasy maps and I don't suspect I'll ever stop making those. There is so much to drawn inspiration from and build outside of CoS, including greater Ravenloft lore and other sources of inspiration such as games like Diablo, The Witcher, Dragonage, Elden Ring, etc all of which could provide great additional maps for your adventures inside and outside of Ravenloft. I also plan on working on the maps for Grim Hollow's: Fables Citadel of the Unseen Sun!

Thanks again for all your wonderful support, engagement, and enthusiasm for my work. I know this is often heard by content creators but seriously, you all mean the world to me and your support has made the many (many) hours of work worth it and drives me to keep improving my skills at map making. To each and everyone of you, a humble thank you from my wife and I.

Cheers,

DM Andy

Oh no!! So close! I am working on the Road to Ravenloft this week which will feature a winding mountain road leading to the castle plus the guard towers and drawbridge. Basically it will end right at the entrance to the outer castle walls. Then after my next LBH adventure I plan on working on the castle proper exterior. Thank you so much for your support!! I'm very humbled and grateful you've enjoyed my work so far. Cheers, DM Andy

Very excited for the Castle, I think my group will *just* get to the castle for the big showdown a few weeks too soon for your maps to be finished. Nonetheless, keep up the great work! Really enjoying your maps since I found them recently. I appreciate what you do!

The outdoor map will include both the castle and outer walls / towers so you'll be able to place tokens below and on the castle ramparts. I love the idea about the Vistani and I've made a note to include it as an alt variant. I'll have to look more into the murderous garden as that sounds cool! I could create another alt version for that as well.

YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS

You didn't mention the castle walls. They should be accessible from two different levels, and for some reason I don't think I've ever seen anybody rig corner towers or the gatehouse. The Animated Tome of Strahd has a pile of scenes in various castle areas (but of course the child Strahd scene ought to be in his hereditary family castle). There's a thing from.. Expedition, if I recall? that has a murderous garden on the roof of one of the towers. The Book says that Strahd has Vistani at the castle, but never puts them anywhere.. at the castle. In those days, the lord of the castle would have had a tent city of sorts towards the rear of the castle/fort. I suggest putting an optional handful of Vistani tents and wagons near Strahds carriage house. The reason for that is, due to the fact that one of the stock maps of Castle Ravenloft had some trees depicted on the SOUTH side of the castle, people like to put a grove and or a garden on that side. I think there was some mention of Tatyana taking a stroll through the garden, as well as the cook going out to the garden to retrieve stuff, so that's why people like the option of a garden.

Yeah, it's going to be pretty awesome! I'm excited to do more maps for Etharis as I think they would fit a dual role of generic dark fantasy and yet be specific enough for GH.

Andy D'Amato

I'm really looking forward to it :)

Andy D'Amato

I'm excited!

Andy D'Amato

I hope I can hit everyone's expectations :)

Andy D'Amato

I hope I'll be able to deliver in time for your October campaign!

Andy D'Amato

I know!! It'll be my biggest map project to date, but really looking forward to it

Andy D'Amato

Hopefully I can at least finish the 1st floor map before your party has their dinner with Strahd if they have not yet done so :)

Andy D'Amato

It's going to be pretty wild haha! I can't wait to get it all done :)

Andy D'Amato

WOW..I can not wait for this one. Then Gim Hollow`s Nice.

Smashskull

Fantastic 😊

Mike

I share everyone's excitement. Cannot wait to see what you do with the castle!

Chuck

Yessss! I really hope you finish most of the maps by October! I hope to have an epic finale ("mid-season finale"?) for my first ever campaign around Halloween. That said, we're 5 sessions in and they juuuust got to Tser Pools - so it probably won't be too hard to stall for a bit if need be. 😅

Toj

Holy freaking moly dude. This is going to be epic!

Einjuden

I'm very excited to see this post! I hope I can keep my party away from the castle for a while longer!

Dr Albee

Excited hyperventilating pig/dog noises! I am so looking forward to this content, may even stall for certain sections ^^
