Important: Update on Transparent Background Files
Added 2021-10-20 17:24:34 +0000 UTC
Hello to my amazing patrons! I have some important updates I need to share with you all today which will impact the way I’m allowed to distribute my maps.
As you may or may not know, I use a program called Inkarnate to make my maps. This is a wonderful tool which allows me to create the fantastical maps I’m able to bring to you all. The great thing about Inkarnate is their annual membership allows me to distribute maps through sites such as Patreon and I am eternally grateful for this allowance.
However, I have misinterpreted an area of their Terms and Conditions which prohibits the redistribution of their assets outside of maps created by content creators such as myself. This includes transparent .png files such as roofs. I thought the Terms prohibited me from redistributing the un-altered assets, but it turns out this applies to all transparent background files, including images which use a combination of assets that I have created.
I fully understand and respect this decision as means to protect their artist’s work. I respect and admire all the Inkarnate artists and want to make sure I am in full compliance with their Terms.
What this means for you all is, unfortunately, I will be taking down all my transparent files I’ve been adding to my map releases. This does include roof files I have been making for many of you for use in Foundry VTT. I will still continue to create building maps with roofs on them, but will no longer be allowed to distribute the roof as a separate .png file.
Going forward, I will be looking to source other artist’s content which includes distribution licenses that allows me to create roof files. So long as I purchase and have permission from the artist to redistribute, I am allowed to use them as custom assets within the Inkarnate platform and create a solution for the roof files. However, the look, mood, and feel of my maps is very important to me so I will be very selective over which assets I would look to purchase. It may take me some time to find the right art style that mixes well with the maps as quality is first for all my maps.
As some of you have come to find, I love to serve my Patreon community and will bend over backwards to see to your requests fulfilled to the best of my abilities. I apologize to anyone that is here specifically for the .png roof files and fully understand if you want to cancel your membership with me. My main goal is to make awesome maps and serve my patron community, but I must remain within compliance of the various Terms I operate under.
I promise to continue looking for a viable solution that is approved for distribution so I can meet all your needs, but until then, I hope you continue to enjoy the maps I have been creating!
Thank you all for your support, it really does mean the world to me!
Cheers,
DM Andy

Unbelievable. Ask the Dungeon Madames. Odds are they made the content that you're using to make the (newer) roofs in the first place. If they can't throw together a tileable roof for you to use, I probably have a pile of free to use ones laying around somewhere. Something they make is nearly guaranteed to match. I could probably find something that would be a close match.

It makes it extremely tough for someone like myself who is new to all this to have a desire to continue learning the tricks of the trade and to support the tools and artists.

2021-10-21 22:05:58 +0000 UTCThanks so much Eric! Yes it is easy to miss something on all the ToS's we have to work with. I'm glad they were so nice about it and allowed me to correct it before it became a bigger issue. My intent was only to provide a better service but totally understand where they are coming from as well.

2021-10-21 21:59:03 +0000 UTCThanks Sebastien! I know it was so handy to have them done already for you and I was happy to do it. But don't worry, I will be keeping my eyes out for another solution!

2021-10-21 15:31:33 +0000 UTCwill stay there and continue to support your work, i'm a foundry guy and was happy with the roof png, but if you can't do them anymore no matter will do them myself (as I used to do it since foundry allow to use it), keep on doing your awesome work !!!

2021-10-21 09:34:10 +0000 UTCThank you JM! I love working with Inkarnate and their dev team is always hard at work in adding tons of new tools that I can use to make some great maps. I keep honing my skills with the platform as well to produce even better looking maps! Also, 100% agree! Pyram is awesome and adds so much great content to the game. I'm so honored he uses my maps in his videos and it has been an absolute pleasure to work with him.

2021-10-20 19:50:57 +0000 UTCThanks so much Vincent! When I get a chance I will check out Forgotten Adventures assets and see if they work with my style. If that means I need to make the roof .png files public that's fine, I will still offer variants for my patrons for the maps. I really appreciate your support!

2021-10-20 19:49:06 +0000 UTCI 100% prefer Inkarnate style to Dungeondraft one ! Your maps are amazing, keep going ! And Pyram King helps to give it life ! Fantastic co-work ! thanks guys !

2021-10-20 17:51:58 +0000 UTCI'm sorry to hear about this, Andy - it's always rough when you find out the tools you're using have a restriction that you missed. I had a similar issue when I started using 3rd party assets, but the creator was completely understanding that it can be a little confusing sometimes. Regarding Pyram King and Matt's suggestions, I imagine Baileywiki will point you towards Forgotten Adventures or Tom Cartos assets, as (to my knowledge) these are the assets he primarily uses for his own maps. Speaking from my own experience with Forgotten Adventures assets for my own CoS maps, they are fantastic to work with, but they do come with a caveat - until they finalize their new commercial license, you can not put any of their assets behind a paywall, to my knowledge. Not sure how much of an issue that would be for you, but it's worth considering. In saying that, I can imagine the thought of switching to a new program isn't massively appealing after the time you've spent learning Inkarnate...

2021-10-20 17:43:12 +0000 UTCThanks Matt! I love using Inkarnate and plan to continue using the tool as I continue to hone my skills. I do have Forgotten Adventures assets on my radar and so long as I can distribute them, I can upload them as custom assets to the Inkarnate library for use with my maps. That might be a great solution!

2021-10-20 17:36:17 +0000 UTCThanks Pyram! You're amazing and I appreciate all of your support. I just need to adjust and keep on moving :) I'll reach out and find a solution that'll work. Thank you so much!

2021-10-20 17:35:06 +0000 UTCIs moving to dungeon draft a possibility? The Forgotten Adventures assets are pretty similar to what you've been making so far.

2021-10-20 17:29:01 +0000 UTCYou have my support 100% May I suggest reaching out to Baileywiki - as he may have some ideas or alternatives? As you know he is an expert in Foundry and making tiles. Let me know if there is anything I can do.
