FRIENDLY RIVALRY EPs.13-16 || REACTION

Comments

It would be interesting if after you rewatched on your own and processed your thoughts about everything, you could do a video having your final thoughts. Anyway, I am so happy you reacted to this show. It’s amazing and I hope but doubt it, will release it world-wide on dvd.

Just love the fact that at the Jaeyi gave Seulgi shoes to, instead of running away from her like she was afraid of when she gave her the school uniform, but to find her when she's ready with a picture of her location. A wholesome hopeful ending that hopefully if they do season 2, they'll follow up on.

More thoughts! Something I love about Jei as a character is that I feel like she never does anything for only one reason. She always has multiple angles on everything. You talked a bit about the reason she was selling drugs, and I think there were several reasons. One, like you said, was to be rebellious against her dad, but I think she was also doing it to make money to live off of after she escapes. It also gave her leverage over all the other students to maintain her emperor-like status at the school. She also knew that, despite everyone thinking the drugs were helping them study, they were actually doing the opposite, so selling drugs to the other students helped her maintain her top student position. Out of all the students in their class, the only ones we never see taking pills are Jei and Gyung, the top two students in the school (until Youngjae's character (I can never remember his name, lol) gives some to Gyung, and then she bombs the CSAT). Seulgi only joins Jei as the top student when Jei tricks her into getting off of the pills she's taking. Speaking of which, that part in episode 16 where Jei tells Seulgi that the pills were multivitamins might be my favorite line of dialogue in the series, because it completely reframes Jei's entire relationship with Seulgi. When you re-watch the series, there are several interactions between them that get recontextualized by that knowledge. Anyway, I could talk for days about this show, so I'll stop now unless you tell me you want to read more of my babbling, lol

I've loved watching your reactions to this show! You were really perceptive and picked up on some things it took me a couple of watches to notice. Unfortunately, there isn't a follow-up episode where we see them together again (trust me, we all want that) but the next best thing is watching Subin's episode of Hyell's club. I highly recommend both her and Hyewon's episodes. They're a great time, and provide some nice comfort and catharsis after the emotional devastation of the finale. Also, this interview (it's in two parts) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjeFH3EvRwE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6s0cwQfhUI with Hyeri is one of the best celebrity interviews I've ever watched. They talk a lot about Friendly Rivalry, among other parts of Hyeri's life and career. The interviewer REALLY did her homework, asks some really good questions, and gets a lot of really good conversation out of Hyeri. However much you may already love Hyeri, that interview is guaranteed to make you fall even further in love with her.

Yeah, the first time I watched, I started crying at the scene where Seulgi is yelling for Jei at the lake, and the tears kept flowing through the entire ending sequence, but the part that really got me sobbing was when Seulgi opened the box and I saw the shoes. "I wanted to buy you shoes, but I heard gifting shoes makes the receiver run away."

I really want to commend your observational skills in terms of piecing Jei's plot line together! The symbolism of Jei going from gifting Seulgi an entire uniform set except for shoes (so she doesn't run away from her) to sending a box of shoes at the end really got me. Obsessed with Gyung and Yeri raising a dog together, their little side plot really didn't take much of the screen time but somehow they managed to convey their entire arc. Thank you for this great reaction!
