I think a big part of Edwin's character growth would be going for what he wants rather than stewing and not making a move then ultimately being disappointed/regret he didn't. He's very cautious and doubts himself a lot plus i think he has a tendency to freeze up. After all the drama, they get back together, and he needs to reaffirm what HE wants, aka he wants to be serious, this isn't just a fun passed time anymore.

He finally is upfront about what he wants, he told her he loved her which lead to the falling out, but now he's able to put into words that he loves her, he wants her seriously, wants a relationship, a future, wants to date for real. Portia has to learn to be brave and finally accepts the fact that he truly and 100% wants her, and that it might not work out.... but it could be great, so she should take the chance and not run away.
