Horse (strip)

And that's how they came up with "horsepower."

Trust me. Don't look it up.

From an article on energy: ' Although Watt may have "bent the truth" to make his engine more appealing, he was not lying. While it is true that the maximum output of a horse is around 15 horsepower, when you average the output of a horse over the course of a work day it ends up being around a horsepower. Watt defined this amount as "the amount of work required from a horse to pull 150 pounds out of a hole that was 220 feet deep". '

Wow. I always wondered about that. Hope somebody doesn't hook their car to a Chihuahua and expect a tow.

Well this is correct without being correct. Yes, a horse may have a peak of 14 horsepower for really a few seconds. A horse can pull 550lb in one meter in one second, or 735 watts, and so on. But when the interest in having steam and mechanical things going is working on a day. A horse will never keep 14hp a day long, in fact, a horse has 1hp on a working day. People wanted to know if horses were better or not than machines. So this machine will be able to have 30hp all day long while the horse will have 1hp all day long.

"Mr. Washington says otherwise" is the best line to use when bribing someone. These days we'll have to have Mr. Franklin say otherwise though....
