Usually a log refers to a fallen section of a Tree's trunk or sometimes a very large branch

If it's over 6in in diameter, it's a log. If it's under 1in in diameter, it's a stick. If it's in the middle, it's a branch. If it's under 1/4in in diameter, it's a twig.
