Invasive Species

Nature finds a way.

I thought of this as, "What if The Last of Us, but feminization?"

Just like the fungus in the game was based on reality, this caption is also based on a real feminizing parasite.

When a female Sacculina is implanted in a male crab, it interferes with the crab's hormonal balance. This sterilizes it and changes the bodily layout of the crab to resemble that of a female crab by widening and flattening its abdomen, among other things. The female Sacculina then forces the crab's body to release hormones, causing it to act like a female crab, even to the point of performing female mating dances. If the parasite is removed from the host, female crabs will normally regenerate new ovarian tissue, while males usually develop complete or partial ovaries instead of testes.

It takes all kinds, I guess. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks, Nolwenn! Yes, I'm thinking about the best way to do it... I really like this idea, too!

Emory Ahlberg

Wow :-0.....forced feminization in the animal kingdom....that's crazy! x

stacy C

Will you devellop this story. I'd like to see more of it?

Nolwenn

That's why I called this my "THE LAST OF US" idea. Sure, it might be the end of civilization - but WHAT an ending! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Emory Ahlberg

Seeing Mr Davis in this sort of scenario would certainly be interesting!

Emory Ahlberg

Ooo, very interesting, Wojtek! Maybe you'll be one of the last men left!

Emory Ahlberg

I imagine it's the only one in which many of us would be EAGER for infection, Ella. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you! I've had this idea for a while but didn't know what shape I wanted it to take exactly. I really like this version... I think it has a future!

Emory Ahlberg

Right? Now that's what I call a win-win situation!

Emory Ahlberg

Not to throw cold water on what would be a fun infection to contract, but as with anything in immunology, if a pathogen is too dangerous (in this case, to males) and too quickly-spreading, it'd burn itself out. In humanity, it would take a generation, but once most men had contracted the parasite and changed enough, reproduction would die out, and humanity with it. Females who crave males would find none. One would assume that any children conceived would be affected - so no male offspring, and no 'follow-on' generations to grow into sperm-donors. There IS such a thing as too dangerous of a pathogen. But what a party until all the males were gone - then massive lesbian orgy!

Nature will find a way, muse Emory, that's for sure. There are quite a few people I hope it finds her way TO.

Alex From the Tri-Cities

My scenario is quite realistic: look at this article Mosquitoes are being genetically modified so they can't spread malaria https://www.newscientist.com/article/2338948-mosquitoes-are-being-genetically-modified-so-they-cant-spread-malaria/ Dated 21 September 2022 Would you like to take risks,? People are not mosquitoes , but a drowning man grasps at straws!

Wojtek

Guess that's the only kind of pandemic I would like to face again!

Ella Cherry

Fantastic! It has so many possibilities with plot tentacles radiating outward, all the different ways people might get infected from those who run a mile to those who embrace it; some who are super-spreaders and others who are immune.

Congenital Optimist

Asher can infect me any day. Iโ€™d quite happily risk it to be with a hottie like โ€œherโ€๐Ÿ˜ and if I turn into a hottie like that even better

Omagathief

Maggie I also thought of the movie โ€œSpeciesโ€ 1995. As for treatment there is a way, men have to have something to fight the parasite, some sort of counter-parasite, maybe they themselves will be feminized but they won't infect new ones! Woud you like to have a choice๐Ÿค”?

Wojtek

Ohhh lol... it reminds me "Species" 1995 movie but looks faaar more promising โฃ๏ธโฃ๏ธโฃ๏ธ

Maggie Heels

Thanks, Gemma! I really like this concept and may explore it further in the future. It seems like a ripe playground for all kinds of stories. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Hel! One of those that popped into my brain unannounced - and so glad it did. I may want to expand on this idea in the future...

Emory Ahlberg

This is the ONLY time I'd be anti-mask. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Emory Ahlberg

They're ALWAYS watching, Robert! ๐Ÿ‘€

Emory Ahlberg

Ohh Emory, what a creative and tantalising use of natural phenomenon and science. It has created such a potential teasingly reality for me to ponder on. I donโ€™t want to wipe out the male of the species altogether and I do hope that a vaccine is eventually found to halt this pandemic eventually, but , only after of course, I have been infected.

Gemma

I hope Netflix is watching!

Robertlouis

Inspired take, it fits so well.

Helena Grace

Thereโ€™s only one possible solution: quickly identify a few million uninfected males, milk them for, say, six months to a year, storing everything so future births can be guaranteed, and then let nature take its course. This is going to be a wonderful world.
