Since it's never explained this isn't really a spoiler but what you guys saw from Gohan was just all of his latent power brought out. To explain what that means it's basically hidden boost Gohan releases during his rage episodes like through Raditz, Nappa, Frieza, and Cell. The hidden boost he got from rage episodes is what Elder Kai is bringing out but he's maximizing to bring all of it out. Another fact is it's a semi-transformation in the sense it grants him a huge power boost but doesn't change his appearance much.
