2024-07-23 19:16:33 +0000 UTCAs epic as the moment was and as epic as several moments in the Buu saga are this is why the Buu saga often gets criticized for its writing. You can tell Toriyama was petering out and throwing whatever at the wall until something stuck when this great moment completely spits on everything Vegeta’s Atonement mini arc had just established. Not to mention Goku could’ve instant transmissioned with Trunks to Bulma’s house and just grabbed the radar without all the repercussions of going SS3. Then if you look at the narrative happening with Gohan and the separate narrative happening with the kids etc etc, if you know what’s coming up then you know there’s a little bit too much happening. Still a great arc but Toriyama was visibly playing it by ear more than ever.

2024-07-22 19:30:34 +0000 UTCThat’s what happens when someone as powerful/talented as Goku gets special training and accesses to working with an unlimited amount of dead masters in the afterlife. Just like him learning the fusion technique as well. Have to give Vegeta props for coming as far as he did on his own though. As for why it drains the time Goku has left. It could be possible that the transformation puts so much strain on his body that it saps away his life force. But it’s never truly stated why.
