Mooncross Flower

HEY GUYS! HOWDY?

Ready for more No North concept art for Book 2??

Here's something different I had a lot of fun making! I've never had to come up with a ficcional flower before! But this one is very special and very important to Delilah.

This is a Mooncross flower. It blooms in the early morning hours, while the moon is still shining. It's a type of Lily, but not much is known about it, since it's only found deep into the wilderness.

Delilah is very fond of her flower, but no matter what she does, it just barely survives.

The final design for the Mooncross flower is the big one on top, but I thought I'd include some other tests because they were a lot of fun to make!

I'd really LOVE to hear your thoughts on this!

Thank you all SO MUCH for your fantastic support, you're all awesome!!

How beautiful!!!! Always nice to see more content of one of my favorite characters!!! I think I’m starting to peel back the layers. Obviously, the dying flower represents her suppressed spirit in her relationship with Baltazar, and how she’s slowly losing herself. But the fact that in blooms in the early morning hours could also hint to the fact that that’s Delilah’s favorite time of day, the quiet, melancholy, pastel shades of the morning that she gets to enjoy before Balt wakes up. Because it blooms in the wilderness, I really think that symbolizes where Deli’s heart belongs, free as a bird with no one to chain her down

I love the design for it! It’s nice seeing these little pieces of world building for the story, since it helps it stand out from the rest. And who can’t love more of Curtis and Delilah 🥰?

This is a lovely concept Skailla! Seems to be a metaphor for Delilah's relationship with Baltazar

Ohh this is so fascinating! I love the idea of the Mooncross Flower, and I can get why Delilah would like it too! So mysterious and ‘unnatural’ among other flowers, yet to her it’s the (or one of the) most beautiful out there. I can definitely see how it symbolizes Delilah, too- only grows (well) in the wilderness, no matter how Delilah tries to help it survive and thrive. Delilah tries her best to be optimistic and happy, because she knows she has everything she ‘could ever need’ (to put it in Baltazar’s words) and every time she questions it, she’s told it, too. Deep down, she knows something is wrong, that she’s not where she should be, but just by looking around it seems like she couldn’t be happier! Sure, she loves her garden and her paintings to bits, but..she feels like there’s still something out there, more to life for her than staying shut up in a garden, not to mention never being able to see the outside world. Just like that Mooncross, she tries her best to thrive and be happy in the world/place she’s in, but..it’s just not where she’s meant to be. And no matter what she does, she can’t change that. No matter how many times she tells herself she should be happy, deep down that’s just not true. A very harsh reality to face but one she will inevitably have to, or she’ll die. Not literally, but mentally, emotionally; if she stays in that garden forever, she’d lose herself to what everyone else wants. And that’s one of the worst things you can ever do. And she knows that, and when the time comes, in the early hours of the morning, she’ll bloom. She’ll make her stand, make her escape- whatever must happen to keep her alive- again, not literally, but if she doesn’t chase after what brings her alive, well, her incredible spark will be lost. Reminds me of the quote “I don’t want to just survive. I want to live.” Her character is just so interesting, I was drawn to her from the very start! I cannot wait to see how her story goes and what waits for her! And the detail of Curtis trying to understand (and, maybe understanding) Delilah’s sadness is great. In fact, he probably does understand- that’s why he asks her to come with her, why he’s constantly wondering- he knows what Delilah feels and how painful it is. The idea of the Mooncross Flower and how much it relates to her is genius, and the designs for it are so pretty! I love how everything, every bit of work you put into this world, into this story is so genuine and clever; and it all works so incredibly well and is always beautiful. I do wish I can have ideas and do art like you one day! You are my biggest inspiration, thank you for always being who you are and sharing it with us! I can’t wait to see what’s next!

They do!!

They kind of remind me of the silent princess from legend of Zelda breath of the wild?

I feel like the flower represents Delilah. She’s trying her best to “bloom” and be happy with her life. But she feels trapped and can’t be completely joyful. It’s a gorgeous design tho. I love it.

Oh! Such a beautiful flower! I can see why Delilah likes them so much! 🩵 The final design is so beautiful, but the test designs also look amazing, I love that you included them! 💖 Poor Delilah! I hope someday she's able to keep a Mooncross flower of her own alive. She seems like she cares so deeply about all of her flowers, I know it would mean a lot to her to keep one alive 🥺

Love the look and colours of the flower! Worldbuilding plants and stuff can be so much fun, I’m really looking forward to seeing the next book of No North, that’s what inspired me to create a fictional world for my own project in the first place!

Those poor little flowers.
