Avatar: The Last Airbender 2 X 7

Hola Primos!

It's time for another Friday with the Cousins! Which is always a great (and EXCITING) time. 😅

In today's ATLA (uncut) we learn so much more about Zuko's back story. This story line is really amping up!

Enjoy today's episode!

I think Iroh chose to be with zuko , I don’t think he was banished

Ooooops. Just remembered that there are few things in the comic that might spoil how ATLA ends 🤧 Thanks for the reminder

Yusraa

I think you may have forgotten, it DOES spoil things about the ATLA series. We learn more about Zuko's family in season 3, and if they read her story, it will spoil important things that we will learn.

I remember being confused about what happened to Zuko’s mom after I watched ATLA for the first time. I think ya’ll should look it up on the internet… it’s definitely not a spoiler to the ATLA series and doesn’t really have anything to do with its story, but it’s quite interesting and makes you understand things a bit easier

Yusraa

picked up on this during the edit! It's a side of Iroh we hadn't really seen

Sadly Zuko’s mom storyline isn’t shown in the shows but rather in the comics which is a continuous of the show. You’ll have to read the comics that talks about who she she is and where she grew up and what actually happened that night.

I’ve been re-watching this show thousands of times but I’m sorry to tell you that Zuko’s mother backstory is not here!! it’s in the comics 🥹💔

I think the scene when Zuko reveals who he is to the Earth Kingdom people is really powerful. "Even though I may be hated this is who I am, no more and no less". He's on his way to find out himself and the way he should take from now on so him accepting all of his identity (that comes with pride, hatred, pain etc.) is important. He knew he's gonna be rejected by those people if they ever find out who he is but protected them anyway, tried to get close to the people who helped him first, showed him kindness. It had to be painful. And he didn't simply say he's a random Fire Nation runaway, he pridefully stated he's the Prince of the Fire Nation. It feels like a big step on his new path. I also really loved the interactions between him and Earth Kingdom citizens. He didn't attack innocent people even though he was probably going crazy from hunger and didn't accept free food, he worked hard to earn his share of food, worked physically. It was probably the first time he ever had to do such basic labor since he was born a prince and lead a life of luxury (even when he was banished he had a lot of money, a ship and a crew) but he did it without a single complain and protected people who showed him kindness. All of it must come from his gentle nature that his mother was trying to nurture in him but mostly from Uncle Iroh's teachings, I believe. One more thing - did you guys noticed how was Iroh before he lost his son and lost the battle? He was leading a war, a siege, as a Fire Nation's general and lightly joking about burning down a whole city (a capital of a kingdom, imagine how many people is that and how many people he must have already killed, capture etc. by winning battles and earning his title of a great warlord)! We cannot imagine him ever saying and doing such things as he is now - gentle, wise, kind. So the death of his son must have reaaaally struck him as he couldn't even continue the siege anymore, came back as a "quitter" and "loser". But he does not seem to mind people criticizing him (as Admiral Zhao was doing and also Azula) for any of that. That's how much he changed. It's a complete 180*. Must have suffered a lot and that's probably why he cares so so so much for Zuko.

Love love love this ep! The fire nation political drama is so fascinating to me and Zuko is by and far my favorite character in the show. They really gave him such an amazing character arc and I'm sure y'all will enjoy it! Also is it a spoiler to say this is the episode that probably leaves the most unanswered questions? I've seen a lot of really interesting and thought provoking theories over the years about this storyline, but I won't share them until y'all finish the show. As for one of my personal theories, I've always thought Zuko and Azula ended up the way they did because Azula showed early aptitude as a bender, and Ozai took her under his wing because of that. He's obviously disappointed in Zuko's ability (or lack thereof), so I think he kind of washed his hands of him and let their mother handle him for the most part. Always a very interesting family dynamic to dissect. Looking forward to next week and also y'all getting to learn more about Toph (another favorite character haha)!

So without the spoiling... you're close but still missed something lol. And you can definitely understand more of characters behavior (not only Zuko but also Azula) if you carefully observe their interactions with people surrounding them when they were kids. Well, it may seem easy to catch for me 'cause I know it already so I can't really lecture you. You guys are doing great analysis every episode! Can't wait for next week, have a nice weekend~
