I focused on integrating the first part of the puppet theater segment. I think it’s one of the most challenging segments I’ve worked on so far, mainly because of the number of graphic assets and how they interact with each other. It works a bit like the TV commercial segment (with a background and images layered on top) but with more overlapping layers and custom animation for both the puppets and the curtains. I decided to make it even more complex (for fun!) by allowing the player to name their puppet. If you choose a “wrong” name, Ms. Cosset will reprimand you. It might sound simple, but it took a surprising amount of time to implement! For example, the Enter key kept messing with the dialogue when the player picked a name Ms. Cosset didn’t like, so I had to find a way to disable that key entirely for the whole game (Screenshots 1, 2, and 3). June can also invent a fun backstory for her puppet, maybe she was a princess, a biker, or even a scientist. Later on, she might meet some familiar faces...(Screenshots 4 and 6). Each choice triggers different reactions from her classmates. Some choices please certain characters while displeasing others. For now, these choices don’t have consequences, but I’m considering making them affect secondary variables like Lola’s independence or Charlotte’s brattiness. I also did a sketch for the interior of the diner a while ago and completely forgot to share it, so here it is! That’s about it for today, next week, I’ll be finishing up this segment!
