In the manga it was set up differently. Aqua at first questions him if he ever knew Ai but he says she was before his time. And in a cut scene from the manga Aqua at first thinks Himekawa might be his target as he looks at the results of the DNA test and then we transition to him confronting him. I think the Anime version is much better in terms of it being a big reveal and ends right there. This point forward is when shit gets hella good and peak. Get ready when it comes back cause some major stuff dropping in the next one.
