So many things to talk about: -You have probably heard/seen the OP somewhere before. It is on a lot of “greatest anime OPs lists (#1 on a fair amount). The title of the song translates to “cherry-blossom moon,” and I’d recommend you look up the translated lyrics. I would not be surprised if it was written specifically for this arc. -Princess Soyo has appeared once before, way back in episode 14, in which she ran away from the castle and hung out with Kagura for a day. -Gin, Takasugi, Zura, and Sakamoto are all in their late 20s. Shinpachi is 16, Kagura is 14, Sougo is 18, Hijikata is mid-20s, Kondo is early-30s, Yamazaki is 32. Nobume is around the same age as Sougo. -The “Kansai” purge has been mentioned in passing before. Gengai’s son was a victim of it. -I can’t remember if you’ve watched Naruto, but Oboro’s hand-to-hand techniques more or less operate on the same principles the “Gentle-fist(Byakugan martial art) does, i.e. attacking chakra/pressure points while using your own to enhance your attacks. -Serious ShigeShige is intimidating af. -Shoyo’s death broke Takasugi. His whole view is “a world where someone as kind as sensei could have such a horrible death should be destroyed/doesn’t deserve to exist.” You were 100% correct when you said he’s focused on revenge as opposed to Gintoki. Gintoki is doing what Shoyo would want for his students, which is to move past his death and focus on living fulfilling lives -There are parallels between Gin and Shoyo’s promise and Maizo and Suzuran’s. Both promised to return to the other but almost ended the same, in that they never did.
