Hello Fellow Pipers!

Last time, I talked about the process of creating storyboards and building a mental library to generate ideas. However, no matter how much I see or think, making fun videos seems really challenging. It feels like I'm always drawing the same things, and my creativity might be lacking.

This week, let's discuss one attempt to solve this challenge, which is creating an "Ingredient List" that can help.

In videos, various materials are used: how the screen is arranged, what poses or expressions the characters have, what's in the background, what voices are heard, what props are used, and so on... By using these materials, the video gains its unique character. So, before directing, it's recommended to list these three items to start

Props:

The character section lists the traits the character has, what interesting actions and situations the character can create, and how to depict the character's uniqueness. The background section organizes what elements create the overall atmosphere. Finally, the props section ranges from small items that create impressions to interesting props that can represent the production.

How these props are used harmoniously with the lyrics of my musical piece is the key.

Here are the materials for this project for example!

Characters: Composer, Musician, Mouse Whisper, Mouse Tail, Cloak, Skirt, Hat, Ballet, Conductor 

Background: Dam, Steam Engine, Smoke, Chimney, Water Difference, Canal coming down from the mountain, Moon, Mist, Stage, Spotlight, Two Different Villages, Carnival Festival

Props: Flute, Flute Case, Disassembled Flute, Glasses, Hat, Abandoned Cloth, Iron Bar, Shoes

The more design elements and settings I have in my work, the more diverse ways I can add character. It seems like a lot of thought, but it can be really helpful. Directing has infinite possibilities, but if I get a little lazy, I might end up showing repetitive images, so it requires a lot of thought.

Currently, before proceeding with the second storyboard, I am taking the time to rework the song lyrics and the direction. It might be a bit slow, but my goal is to steadily move forward, one step at a time.

안녕하세요 동료 파이퍼즈 여러분!

지난번에는 스토리보드를 제작하는 과정과 아이디어를 얻기 위한 머릿속 라이브러리 만들기에 대한 이야기를 했었어요. 하지만 아무리 많은걸 보고, 아무리 많은 고민을 해도 재미있는 영상만들기는 참 어려운것 같아요. 왠지 항상 그리던 그림만 그리는 것 같고, 독창성도 떨어지는것 같은 느낌이 들죠.

이번주에는 이런 고민을 해결에 도움을 주는 시도중 하나인 ‘재료몹기’에 대해서 이야기해 볼 예정이에요.

영상에는 다양한 재료가 쓰여요. 화면을 어떻게 배치하는지, 캐릭터가 무슨 포즈나 표정을 지었는지, 배경에는 뭐가 있는지, 어떤 목소리가 들려오는지, 어떤 소품을 쓰고 있는지 등등… 갖고있는 재료들을 어떻게 사용하는지에 따라서 영상의 개성이 생겨요.

그래서 연출을 하기전에 다음과 같은 3가지 재료를 먼저 적고 시작해보는걸 추천합니다.

캐릭터 항목은 이 캐릭터가 가진 특징이 어떤것이 있는지, 재미있는 동작과 상황을 만든다면 어떻게 할 수 있는지 캐릭터의 특성을 나열하는 항목이에요.

배경 항목은 전체 분위기를 조성하는 배경에 어떤어떤 것들이 있는지 정리해보는 항목이구요.

마지막으로 소품 항목은 인상착의에서 나오는 자잘한 소품들부터 작품을 대표할수 있을만한 재미있는 소품까지 정리해두는 항목입니다.소품을 어떻게 쓸지

우리가 만들고 있는 이 작품은 뮤지컬 작품이기에, 이러한 재료들을 노래 가사와 함께 조화롭게 어우러지도록 만드는것이 주 관건이에요.

이번 작품속의 재료들은 다음과 같아요!

캐릭터: 작곡자, 연주자, 쥐귀, 쥐 꼬리, 망토, 치마, 모자, 발레, 지휘자

배경 : 댐, 스팀엔진, 연기, 굴뚝, 물의 차이, 산에서 내려오는 커널, 달, 안개, 무대, 스포트라이트, 두개의 다른마을, 카니발 축제 – 등불

사물 : 플룻, 플룻 통, 플룻 분리, 안경, 모자, 버려진 천, 철근, 신발

내 작품에 담아둔 디자인적 요소와 설정이 많을수록 개성을 넣을 방법이 다양해 지니 많은 고민을 해보는게 큰 도움이 되는것 같아요. 연출은 무궁무진한 가능성을 가진 분야지만, 또 조금만 게으르면 지나치게 반복되는 이미지만을 보여주게 되기 때문에 생각이 많이 필요한것 같기도 하구요.

현재는 2차 스토리보드를 진행함에 앞서 노래 가사도, 연출도 재정비하는 시간을 갖고 있어요. 조금은 느리지만 분명한 한 발을 떼는것을 목표로 하고있습니다.
