I can somewhat understand that perspective. Not specifically for Shadow since I haven't played the games myself, but there have definitely been times where I've felt like a character being brought back has tarnished that character's legacy. There's no world where SEGA doesn't bring back a marketable character though.

A slight correction: Eggman didn't manipulate shadow in sonic adventure 2. It was the opposite; whether Gerald actually messed with shadow's mind or shadow himself subconsciously buried Maria's last words under guilt and trauma, Shadow carried out Gerald's revenge plan unbenounced to Eggman and in turn Shadow used Eggman's desire for world conquest to trick him into gathering the emeralds with the guise of "fulfilling Eggman's wishes."
Unfortunately, even tho & BECAUSE I generally liked Shadow's story in SA2...Sega bringing him back for Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and basically every game since, it ruined the character. The whole alien plot is nonsense and shadow became kind of a joke as just the "edgier sonic" going forward. He *really* should have actually died at the end of SA2 for his character arc and sacrifice to continue holding weight and meaning.
But, hey, I don't even consider myself a sonic fan per say and could go into a whole discussion on why sonic games were never actually "good" gameplay wise, just that they were held up entirely by character and charm. But that's a different topic.
