Discovering the Mechanics Behind Punch-Out!! (Part 3) - Designing For Reaction

Ah yes, the southpaw. The kind of fighter who is left-handed so that you are much closer to a mirror match than you would be when you pit two orthodox fighters against each other. You actually see this a lot in 2d fighting games, since otherwise you'd have to make double the animations based on a fighter's position. With modern fighting games this looks a bit better than back in the day, like how in Street Fighter 2 Sagat's eyepatch and chest scar would suddenly be mirrored as well. In real fights this changes the dynamic as well, since you and your opponent are closer together with the "near" part of their bodies and you need to commit more to attacks using the "far" parts. And Sandman... hoo boy. Combining the best parts of "Smokin" Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali (or the worst, if you're up against him), there are no shortcuts here, no tricks or exploits. You either git gud or git gone. He will beat you so hard you'll be having a crossover with Kirby decades before Smash Bros came out. And finally, Super Macho Man. His name a dig at Macho Man Randy Savage, he's more of a pastische of all such larger than life showman fighters, and while he is no slouch it's more of the name of world circuit champ that is his greatest asset rather than his skills. I guess that just like IRL professional wrestling those who are popular will make it to the top.
