It's probably for the better that Wario in Smash Bros was based on his Wario Ware incarnation and not the platformer one. In the platformer games Wario can transform as well, but instead of doing that by eating mushrooms he is subjected to all manner of body horror: crushed into a pancake to shimmy through narrow gaps, be set on fire, be turned into a zombie that can fall apart to slip through non-solid floors, be squished into having a spring-like body that must hurt like hell, having an allergic reaction to being stung by a bee and have his face swell up to the point he starts floating, and several more. In a few of the Wario games he was actually immortal, and the difficulty came from trying to figure out where to go next, making them more about the exploration than proceeding by defeating enemies. While they're a ton of fun, I can understand why they lack the mainstream appeal of the mainline Mario games, even though Super Mario Bros Wonder of U can get really out there.
