My First Look At ARCANUM - Sseth Reaction

My First Look At ARCANUM - Sseth Reaction

The difference between a JRPG and a CRPG is that in the former you kill God while in the latter you get the main antagonist to kill themselves just by talking to them. If you're really into the talky type of RPG there's always Planescape: Torment to check out: a deeply philosophical tale about a man with no memory and no past learning what can change the nature of a man. Or Disco Elysium, where a barely functional human being has to wrangle the two dozen voices in his head to investigate a case. While on the subject of Planescape: it uses an earlier version of D&D where armor classes worked differently. Based on your class you have a THAC0 value: To Hit Armor Class 0. You take this value, substract the target's Armor Class, then compare it to the result of a D20. If the result of the die is greater than the calculated value, you hit (the reason they didn't go with D20 + enemy AC was to keep the enemy's AC secret). In this system an AC of 10 meant you were completely unarmored with no boosts to your AC of any kind (magical items or high Dexterity), while an AC of 0 meant you are in full plate mail and have a shield, or are less armored but the equipment is magical or you have other boosts. Here a negative AC often meant supernatural protection of some kind, and would actually add to the value you need to roll (because substracting a negative from a number actually makes the number bigger). And while Arcanum doesn't run on a version of the D&D system (it came out early in 3e's lifecycle, where Armor Class was changed to be closer to 5e's, so it was likely in development when the earlier version was a thing), a negative AC sometimes happens in games like this.

Yes, using charisma and speechcraft is this game is way more interesting than in many others, as there are no highlighted skill check dialogue options that you click to achieve success. Mandalore will descrive it in more depth in his video.
