About half the things to come out of Captain Diomedes' mouth and about 90% of the things Commander Boreale says are memes. The former is from Dawn of War II, while the latter is from Soulstorm. Boreale is voiced by Scott McNeill who I can only imagine was wagered to do the most outrageous voice he's ever done. His lines are not excactly... well, lore friendly or good, but he's a hoot to listen to.
As for the Custodes, they come in several flavors beyond "stand guard at the Golden Throne". Some of them are the Emperor's intelligence service, there's the guys who protect the things in the Imperial Palace's basement (reminder that the Palace is in part hewn from Mount Everest, so the place goes DEEP), or the guys who learn of the great destiny of one of the Emperor's subjects, so they go out and protect that person with their lives until they fulfil that duty. Like the time a Guardsman who was marked for execution by the Commissars was saved by one of these Custodes, who saw the man rise from a lowly guardsman to a general in charge of entire armies. But when he had won one particular campaign the Custodes left, leaving the now extremely high ranking offical at the tender mercies of the Commissariat, who still had an execution to perform, because 40k is like that. The Custodes also have some of the most fancy suits of Dreadnought armor, like the fancier Contemptor dreadnoughts common during the times of the Heresy, to the Telemon Heavy Dreadnought which is even bigger. Unfortunately (but fortunately for everyone else) these are Forge World only and therefore are both more limited in where you can use them and are quite expensive.
As a side note, the feather on Kitten's armor is a shoutout to the model of Trajann Valoris, the canonical Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes. He has some feathers as well but they're a browninsh-grey instead. Note that Kitten is explicitly NOT Valoris: he's been stated to be an original character (do not steal) and that Valoris still exists in this series, but he's just not the Captain-General.
