I'm guessing it's more a situation of them trying something new based off of their previous experiences. Even if there's potential similarities, there's probably no connection.

So the Marathon connection is very dubious at best. The Myth series is it's own thing. It isn't like Halo where Marathon bits and pieces are hidden everywhere to a point that bungie can't even get rid of them all. Here it is more of a "well this could be a reference if you squint at it enough"

Bungie made Myth 1 and 2 right after they were done with Marathon. They followed it up with Oni, and after that it was time for the Chief.
As for some of that credits stuff: the later entries in the Borderlands games started to suffer from the modern day "comedy" thing where people think that if they draw out a joke long enough people will eventually laugh. Borderlands 3 has it bad, even though the gunplay is excellent. Tales from the Borderlands is one of Telltale's best games and has the best story out of all Borderlands games, while its sequel New Tales from the Borderlands was... not very good. The Thief games are some of the best stealth games on the market and have a very dedicated modding community (they recently released what might very well be one of the best fan projects ever made), but Thief 4 failed miserably.
GURPS is the Generic Universal RolePlaying System. With the core book alone you have immense depth and allows for some incredibly nuance when making a character (which gets even more in-depth when you bring soucebooks for just about anything you can think of ranging from magic to high tech to spaceships, horror, Hollow Earth, Noir and so on) it does mean that character creation is incredibly front-loaded and can require a lot of time to make even a basic character. Once you start playing it's not that hard, but people often check out on that alone. There's a few systems that suffere a similar fate: the superhero game Mutants & Masterminds suffers from a similar issue despite its simplicity once you start rolling. D&D by comparison is way easier for people new to tabletop RPGs, but those grognards who love themselves some granular character creation love it.
