In the games before it Reach was mostly alluded to as an absolute tragedy and total loss, so seeing it happen live was quite the experience for the fans. As for playing the games in chronological order, you can get the Master Chief Collection and play them in the order of Reach - 1 - 2 - ODST - 3 - 4, for the story, but with the changes to mechanics and design it might still be best to play them in release order, so 1 - 2 - 3 - ODST - Reach - 4. Infinite is also on Steam, but you'll be missing the context of 5 (which might not be THAT terrible given its... questionable quality). There's also Halo Wars 1, which is an RTS which was originally designed for consoles, so keep that in mind. Halo Wars 2 isn't on Steam, which has some buildup to Infinite. It's also made by Creative Assembly of Total War(hammer) fame for some reason.
