The reason why King Beragar first took the slayer oath and became the first slayer king was because of the death of his daughter. His daighter was on her way to marry the then high king in Karaz-A-Karak. During the travel south her caravann was attacked by a dragon, lusting for dwarf flesh and gold. The entire party including the princess were slain by the dragon. When the news reached King Beragar he despaired and blamed himself, he blamed himself for not sending a stronger army to accompany his daughter or that he was not there himself to protect her. So for failing to protect his daughter he felt such shame that he took the slayers oath
