The power disparity between Earth and the people operating in space is a subject of much science fiction. This is because at first, anyone who wants to go into space is extremely dependent on Earth for support. Once the extremely large number of challenges posed by sustaining ourselves in space is solved, however, people based in space have an enormous advantage: There is more mineral ore in a single near-earth asteroid than humanity has extracted from the Earth in all of history. Once asteroids can be exploited in a microgravity environment (not trivial to figure out) that means spaceborne humanity has access to an extremely large amount of very accessible resources. Think the rapid development of industrialised settlers in the USA times 1000.
