I like this interpretation, even if I wouldn't come to that conclusion myself if I were in her position. Takako was just built different.

Shirase's mother just wanted her daughter to grow up in a world where civilians had access to Antarctica, and she saw herself as instrumental to that effort. That's how I see it, anyway.
