The music is better in season 2 because they had more budget - and because they let Sam Riegel (Scanlan Shorthalt, Teddie, etc.) off the hook.
When the Kevdak fight happened in the campaign, just like in the show, the pokeball play was a play of desperation. Grog's HP was super low, the involvement of the Herd and Vox Machina was already a done deal, and Kevdak was not showing signs of flagging. Vex did her thing with the pokeball, Grog fell, and Matt was like, "Well, you can certainly try. It's going to be hard." And Travis rolled a damn 20 on the 20-sided die. It was probably Grog's most epic moment in the entire campaign, a fitting end to his "personal plot" (this is what we call it when a player character's backstory comes into a TTRPG campaign).
Kaylie (I believe the name is a reference to Firefly's Kaywinnit Lee Frye, Kaylee for short) was a complete surprise to both Scanlan and Sam Riegel. Matt is a very sneaky GM.
