This ending scene in the game was heartbreaking. You don't just go into the tomb of the Chosen of the Goddess of Death without expecting some death. The dad's comments, "You don't know elven culture, you weren't born into it" seem to indicate that they didn't always live with him - and their mother didn't seem to play any role in the scene when they fled the city. I think she may already be dead. Vex is shown as very capable with wilderness survival; this is a Ranger's forte. Vax was lost in the wilderness, rogues do best in cities and around other people.
