In the original campaign, when Scanlan assaulted Vedmire's mansion as a triceratops (events in this show are in a slightly different order) and kept an encounter meant for the whole party busy while setting fire to the building ... it opened my eyes to the incredible power of bards in 5th edition DnD. They are full casters, like wizards, clerics, and druids. They get all the social stuff on top of it. They get to *pick spells from other classes to add to their repertoire*. And then they get to look good doing it. College of Lore bards like Scanlan also get to say "That guy rolled an 18? I think that just makes it. I'll fling an insult at him to make him miss" on occasion. The scroll, and Scanlan fiddling with lightning magic earlier, is throwing a lampshade on how character progression works in DnD. You level up, and then you just get more spells and powers. No training required, no going off for a week to meditate on the nature of electricity to learn lightning bolt. Different GMs run this differently, of course, but this campaign cleaves reasonably close to the rules as they are in the book (except that resurrection is harder in this world than in the book).
